good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. at least 14 people were injured when an suv drove onto a sidewalk in melbourne, australia, in what police believe was a deliberate act. the su swr crashed into a busy cable car stop in the middle of the city today. one witness said people were flying everywhere. police arrested the driver and a second man. the motive was not clear. 12 people were taken to the hospital including a preschool-aged child with serious head injuries. and back here at home president trump may wait to sign the tax overhaul bill until next year. that would delay automatic cuts and spends programs like medicare until 2019 after next year's elections.

lawmakers celebrated the win. hena doba is here in new york. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. a triumphant donald trump and fellow republicans celebrated the passage of their $1.5 trillion tax overhaul as a historic victory for the american people. it's the biggest overhaul of the tax system since 1986. first an animated tweet from president trump delivering what he calls a christmas gift to the american people. then it was on to the white house to celebrate congress's passage of the republican tax reform bill, the first major legislative victory of the trump administration. >> it's always a lot of fun when you win. if you work hard and lose, that's not acceptable. >> even some of the president's critics in the republican party like senator bob corker who voted against the bill the first time around stood behind him on this day. mr. trump received nothing but praise from the gop. >> you're one heck of a leader. we're all benefiting from it. this bill could not have passed without you. >> among the main features of

the bill, it reduces the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%. it doubles the current standard deduction for individuals and families and doubles the child tax credit. democrats claim the bill overwhelmingly benefits the rich. >> the suspicions of the american people that the republican party is helping the wealthy and the powerful corporations and not the middle class has been confirmed in this bill. >> the nonpartisan congressional budget office predicts the legislation will add $1.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thanks so much, hena. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with dan senor about how much the tax overhaul will play in upcoming congressional elections. gop congressional leaders are struggling to avert a looming government shutdown.

congress has until midnight tomorrow to pass a temporary spending bill. the house is expected to vote today. the senate would follow. key senate republicans dropped a demand for a year-end obamacare fix and an $81 billion disaster relief bill will get a separate vote. and later today, the u.n. assembly is going to vote on a resolution criticizing president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. earlier this week the u.s. vetoed a security council resolution requiring the u.s. to rescind the declaration and not move the u.s. embassy there. yesterday president trump threatened to cut off funding for those who vote against it. >> for all of these nations that take our money and then they vote against us at the security council or they vote against us potentially at the assembly, they take hundreds of millions of dollars, even billions of dollar, well, we're watching those votes. let them vote against us.

we'll save a lot. >> they say it can only changed by negotiations. overseas now, there was gunfire this morning along the tense border that separates north and south korea after another north korean soldier defected to the south. south korean troops fired 20 warning machine gun rounds in the direction of north korean troops who were chasing the defecting soldier. this happened in a remote section of a heavily armed border. there are no reports of any injuries. and mexican officials say driver negligence and speed caused the crash of a cruise ship excursion bus. eight americans were killed, two swedes and a canadian. prosecutors say the driver lost control, the bus flipped and hit a tree. it's unclear if the bus driver was taken into custody. the wreckage of that amtrak train has been cleared. three passengers were killed in monday's crash. the train was going 50 miles per hour faster than the speed limit

at the time of the derailment. washington's governor says amtrak agreed to pay the cost associated with the derailment. two confederate statues in memphis were removed overnight. the city sold two parks where the two statues were located to greenspace. greenspace can legally move the statues, something the city was unable to do. >> these statues no longer represent who we are as a modern diverse city with momentum. >> the statues will be stored in an undisclosed location. in virginia, a district court declared a race for a seat in the virginia house a tie. the day before the democratic candidate was declared the winner by one vote. the contest will decide who controls the state house. the chairman of the virginia board of elections says the board will pick a winner by

random, likely by pulling a name out of a hat. olympic gymnast mckayla maroney says she was sexually abused by a team doctor for years. now she is suing. dr. jon lapook has our report. >> reporter: in a lawsuit she accused usa gymnastics of covering up a sex abuse scandal. she wrote that nassar's abuse started when i was 13 years old and didn't end until i left the sport. john manly represents more than 100 girls and one woman including maloney alleging sexual abuse by larry nassar. >> of course, it's a coverup. if you're not trying to cover it up, why are you asking them to bequiet.

spectacular video of an erupting volcano in ecuador. a british photographer captured the images earlier this month in the amazonian andes. the volcano is nicknamed "troublemaker." a photographer recorded the eruption and sped up the video to show how it erupted over a three-day period. the "houston chronicle" reports the police have a new theory on the murder of a mother and the abduction of her 3-month-old baby. the 33-year-old mother was found stabbed to death tuesday in her apartment. her little girl was missing. a woman who recently lost a child could be responsible for

the murder and the abduction. the wall street journal reports president trump commuted the sentence of a meetpacking marketer. sholom rubashkin was sentenced to prison for 27 years. he served more than eight years. members of congress from both political parties and law enforcement officials argued the sentence was too harsh. it's the first time mr. trump has commuted a sentence. "business insider" says another chipotle restaurant is under investigation after another customer reported getting sick. several have said they reportedly became ill. chipotle has struggled to win back customers after previous food safety issues. florida's "sun sentinel" reports police say no one is to blame in a fatal crash involving tennis star venus williams. an investigator says an unidentified vehicle cut off venus williams as she tried to cross through the intersection, setting off a chain of events.

another car slammed into williams' car. a passenger died in that accident 13 days later. williams was not hurt. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ i feel it in my bones just thinking about weather note organizers of the upcoming winter olympics in south korea are warning of very cold weather. the city sits about a half a mile above sea lorne in the northern part of the country. it's notorious for its powerful biting winds. the windchill could be 7 degrees fahrenheit when ceremonies are held on february 9th. it is the winter olympics. on "cbs moneywatch" apple confirms a battery conspiracy and a glimpse at spacex's new mega rocket.

diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. it seems we've all known this. apple has slowed down the performance of the phones. i a the phone's reducing power demands slows the processor. the phone's lithium-ion batteries have problems. in a statement released to cbs news apple said, quote, lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions have a low battery charge or as they age over time which can result in the device shutting down to protect its electronic components. meanwhile stocks fell. reaction to the gop tax rewrite had come and gone pretty much. stocks finished with little change. the dow lost 28 points. points lower. the nasdaq also matched that downward trend, finishing 2 points lower as well.

u.s. home sales hit their highest level in 11 years. sales of existing homes rose 5.6% last month, more than expected. that's according to the national association of realtors. the strong demand is the sign of a steady economic expansion, but there remains a chronic shortage of supply, particularly at the low end of the market. and here's a look at spacex's new super-heavy rocket. the photos released yesterday showed the falcon heavy rocket inside its florida hanger. ceo elon musk says it's his own tesla roadster. keep in mind musk also heads up the tesla electric car company. the falcon heavy has 27 engines, three times more than the rocket spacex uses to launch satellites and supplies to the space station. anne-marie? >> 27 engines. i'm sure no battery problems

>> reporter: the study followed 960 people for about five years and focuses on leafy green vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, and lettuce. the study found that those who ate the most leafy greens were 11 years younger in brain age than those who ate the least. while the study doesn't prove leafy vegetables can slow brain aging, incorporating them into your diet can only help. >> there are so many other chronic diseases that the onset and progression is delayed from consuming leafy greens because the leafy greens contain many nutrients. >> reporter: that's what pedro is trying to do. >> i used to eat a lot of spanish food. everything was fried. now i'm trying to get healthy. >> reporter: he's eating two to three servings of greens a week and says he may start serving up more salad for his body and mind.

overhaul bill into law. that way cuts in programs like med carry won't kick in until 2019, after the congressional election. congress approved the deal yesterday. the deal will give tax cuts to millions of americans, but how much will you be saving next year? kenneth craig has details. >> reporter: the $1.5 trillion tax cut makes major changes to current laws. first off most americans will pay a lower tax rate. >> the vast majority of americans will see a tax cut in the near term. >> reporter: cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger says the reason why is the new law nearly doubles the standard deduction. >> as a result most will be able to claim the standard deduction. >> reporter: but returns can vary widely depending on several factors like where you live and how many children you have. h&r block says a married couple

living in san diego with two children make 1g $50,000 a year will save almost $3,600. they'll also take the $24,000 standard deduction since it's more than itemizing mortgage interest, charitable contributions, and taxes. they'll also take advantage of the child tax credit doubling from $1,000 to $2,000. a single homeowner in queens, new york, will only get $100 more. that's because the state, local, and property taxes he used to deduct is now capped at $10,000 under the new plan. and while most americans will get money back, many of the tax benefits will expire. >> many who see benefits right now, they will actually be gone in 2025. >> reporter: experts say
