into terminal b. they were standing outside the terminal for quite a long time after a brief evacuation due to reports of a suspicious package inside terminal b. according to the airport spokesperson officials were alerted just after 10:00 this morning. travelers are told to expect delays. also breaking this noon hour in the north bay, the village mall on lock down and being evacuated. it's the mall right off highway 101 on the east side. chopper 5 was over the scene moments ago. you can see people evacuated standing across the the street as well as a heavy police presence there. this picture is from twitter and shows us police on the scene there along a service road leading to the mall. this is a developing story so stay with us for the latest details here as well as online at cbssf.com. the man accused of killing a chp officer on christmas eve

is facing second degree murder charges. the 22 year old remains hospitalized. authorities say he was under the influence of marijuana and alcohol when he crashed into the officer's chp vehicle on christmas eve. our kpix5 reporter has more. >> reporter: 33 year old chp officer killed and his partner injured when a suspected dui driver crashed into their patrol vehicle a half hour before christmas day. the driver of the red cadillac was also taken to the hospital and is identified as 22 year old ali from hayward. this picture is from 2013 when he was arrested in fremont for burglary charges that were dismissed. today ali faces murder charges. according to court filing ali was driving over 100 miles per hour when he slammed into the chp suv parked on the shoulder.

investigators say he had just left a party drunk and high on marijuana. >> drinking and driving is socially unacceptable. smoking marijuana and driving is as unacceptable. >> reporter: the death is coming as alameda is seeing a peak in dui arrests. according to the district attorney, hundreds since thanksgiving. >> when will we say enough is enough and finally reach a point where every single driver on the road realizes that he or she cannot and must not drink, smoke, take drugs, and get behind the wheel of a car. >> reporter: ali also faces dui related and speeding charges. the suspect is still in the hospital. he is expected to be released in the next 48 hours at which time he will be booked into jail. >> oak land police are investigating their first homicide of the year. police say a 38 year old woman

was shot inside her home. that happened just after 7:30 yesterday morning. police detained a man for questioning but at this point, there is no word on a motive for that shooting. in fremont a smoky fire at a homeless incampment. the blaze broke out just before 7:00 near the train tracks. there are no reports of injuries and no word on what started the fire. a fire tore through a cardboard manufacturing facility in santa clara. chopper 5 was over the scene as crews worked to knock down the flames. sandra osbourne was there and has the very latest. >> reporter: an overnight fire ripped through the storage yard of a cardboard manufacturing plant. i spoke with the battalion chief. he says the yard is 200 feet by 250 feet and it was stacked with cardboard bails. they're basically like hay bails stacked 15 to 16 feet high. the building they believe was

not damaged. but the plant runs 24 hours a day. miller says there were about 15 employees evacuated. >> i confirmed that all employees had been evacuated as per the normal plan. everyone was accounted for. >> reporter: he says because of the holiday weekend, there were fewer bails of cardboard which was a good thing, possibly preventing a larger fire. the spreading of the fire has stopped but there will be smouldering throughout the day because of the amount of fire that was moving through the cardboard. they're going through the overhaul phase today where they will be ripping across stacks of cardboard to check for more flames. >> we have a large bulldozer being operated by fire captains. we will separate this, take the product and put it into bins so they can haul it off sight. >> reporter: as far as the cause, it is under investigation but throughout the morning they had to use so much water that it will make it

difficult to pinpoint an exact cause. this afternoon, the search is on for two men who robbed a gas station in pleasant hill. police released these surveillance images. the robbery happened last night at the mobile on oak park boulevard. police say both of the men had their faces covered and they were armed. they got away with cash, beef jerky, and cigarettes. anyone with information is asked to call pleasant hill police. santa rosa police looking for the gunman involved in a road rage shooting just after 8:30 last night. police say that the victim was driving and the suspect was tailgating him. the suspect fired one shot according to authorities. luckily no one was hit. the suspect left the scene and a $25 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. the time is 12:06. we are taking a live look outside of san francisco. you see clouds in the sky. it is going to rain here soon.

when can we expect that? >> first comes the the clouds and then the rain. on the doppler we are still seeing the green across the coast. it's coming down in the pacific ocean but we will have to wait for it. it is headed our way. it is still a ways away. late tonight we are expecting to see that rain. satellite and radar showing plenty high clouds and they're thickening up as we get into the afternoon hours. i want to take you to ocean beach. we just passed our high tide event there, up to 7-foot waves. you see how wet it got on the sand and how far the water went, low lying areas experiencing coastal flooding but king tides and flooding will end at 1:00. we have low tides of 1.6 feet. all of that should clear up. we will probably not see the sunset because it will be covered in clouds. coming up, i will track the timing of the rain. president trump is facing several challenges in this new year.

today mr. trump is scheduled to have lunch with the vice president as his administration prioritizes agenda for 2018. the top priority is to pass a bill that would avoid a partial government shut down which could come when it runs out of money in a few weeks. another challenge is dealing with north korea's warning that its nuclear force is a reality, not just a threat. weijia jiang reports that this comes as kim jong-un offered to send a delegation to the upcoming winter olympics. >> reporter: south korea says it is willing to meet for talks with north korea one week from today. in a nationally televised address, south korea's unification minister proposed the two meet in the shared border town to talk about olympic cooperation and how to improve overall ties. the move comes after kim jong- un said monday that he is willing to send a delegation to the winter olympics. south korea is hosting the

olympics beginning in february. president trump has long insisted that talks with north korea should only happen if the country is willing to give up its nuclear program, something that kim jong-un says won't happen. some analysts view kim's offer as a way for the north to drive a wedge between u.s. and south korea. the u.s. wants to pressure north korea to give up its weapons program through un sanctions and oil embargoes. the president tweeted sanctions and other pressures are beginning to have a big impact on north korea. rocket man wants to talk to south korea nor the first time. perhaps that is good news, perhaps not. we will see. weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. >> south korea's president may be vetting that having a north korean delegation at the winter olympics will ensure the safety of the game honing north korea won't launch on the south if there are north koreans at the olympics. al franken plans to

sting rays. one life guard said he hadn't seen so many sting ray injuries in one day in his 40 years on the job. low tides, warm water, holiday crowds contributed to the spike. 2017 was the safest year on the iation safety network says there were ten fatal commercial plane crashes last year. 44 people were killed and that's much lower than the five year average of 17 crashes with 495 deaths. all of last year's plane crashes happened on cargo planes or smaller passenger aircraft. president trump tweeted since taking office i have been very strict on commercial aviation. good news, it was reported that there were zero deaths in 2017, the best and safest year on record. new video this noon of a very close call. take a look at this. a police officer barely escapes after he slips on the ice. you can see him slip right

there. oh man. the officer was responding to a car crash when he fell on the ice. another car comes barreling along and it just misses him by inches. bitter cold continues to grip most of the northeast and midwest. extreme temperatures are being blamed for 9 deaths in the last week. the chill made it more difficult for firefighters dealing with another big fire in new york city. >> a bone chilling freeze has started to turn parts of niagara falls to ice. ice also formed on lake superior in duluth minnesota where wind chill dipped below 0. below normal temperatures are affecting the country coast to coast. in washington state an ice storm knocked out power lines. even deep south is in the grips of the bitter cold. in texarkana this fountain froze from top to bottom. duck hunters had to be rescued

after icy water refroze around their boat. >> on set of hypothermia set in so they called for emergency crews. >> reporter: bitter cold also hindered firefighters in bronx, new york as they battered a massive fire. more than 20 people were hurt. it was a similar scene in massachusetts where firefighters covered in ice battled a house fire. >> the water freezes on our equipment, on our air packs, our masks. >> they rotated shifts thawing out in a mobile unit to keep warm. bitter cold is expected to continue for at least several more days. >> on new year's day the temperature in south dakota dropped to minus 32, breaking a new year's day record set 99 years ago. >> that is super chilly. we are not that cold but we are going to get some kind of precipitation. >> we are, but i want to talk about the east coast.

they have winter storm watches and warnings extending as far as florida. they're expecting blizzard like conditions for northeast. it is going to be dangerous across that section of the u.s. look at the cold temperatures. on the west coast it's nice. 70s for l.a., 12 detroit, 15 pittsburgh, new york city 27 degrees. that cold arctic air will stick around for a while. look how cold it is even as far as san antonio with 36. we are looking at gray conditions, a pretty gloomy day. we will see clouds increasing throughout the afternoon hours. rain will be arriving tonight. we have two storms coming. today we are starting to get the first round in the form of clouds but the rain won't arrive until late tonight or early tomorrow morning. temperatures are feeling warmer than this time yesterday with upper 50s, low 630s liver more, 59 san jose. we have another spare the air alert. you can see the haze out there,

unhealthy for sensitive groups. visibility wise we are down to 7 miles for mountain view, liver more down to 7. it is clear across the north bay. that's not because of the fog. it's mostly the haze. pollutants still clear up once the rain comes through. that's thanks to the low that's off the coast. high pressure is moving out east. we will get this low to come in. it will arrive tonight and early tomorrow. by tomorrow afternoon thunderstorms are expected especially along the coast. here is the futurecast it to time it out. you can see the cloud coverage. light drizzle is what you will wake up to. wednesday afternoon, widespread showers. we expect thunderstorms with the instability associated with the storm. thursday will be mostly dry. thursday night watch closely. a next round is coming from the north, places like santa rosa, a good amount of rain from that storm. through friday we are expecting

an inch for the north bay, possibly an inch for the coast. other areas can see a quarter to 3/4 of an inch. your seven-day forecast showing that we are going to have wet weather for the next three days. by saturday and sunday we will be nice and dry and temperatures will be cool. we are going from the mid 60s to the upper 50s slowly but surely getting to normal temperatures. >> normal temperatures, normal precipitation. we are so dry. >> december was extremely dry. we are opening the window hopefully for a lot of storms. >> thank you. let's look at how the financial markets are doing on wall street as we look at the dow. dow is up 73 points right now. are you feeling lucky? the powerball and mega millions jackpot are nearly $1 billion combined. this is a rare event for both jackpots to hit more than 300 million at the same time. the chances of winning are still pretty slim, one in 259 million for mega million and for powerball it's one in 292
