we are seeing widespread rainfall as expected for your wednesday. taking a look now at some of the areas where the heavy rain is coming down, to the south bay we go. look at san jose. right now, getting about a half inch of rain per hour. the areas of orange seeing some significant rainfall rates as this storm moves from the coast into the inland areas. we're watching it get heavier and heavier. and now we're looking at just past fremont, heading further out east towards sunol, pleasanton also seeing some good amount of rain coming down right along highway 680. san ramon, danville, the cell is building. same with dublin. it is a lot lighter, though, for san francisco. daly city, some light rain and barely a drizzle there across downtown. but people are using their umbrellas across the downtown area. you're going to want that today especially for the afternoon commute. here we are going further north. you can see more of that rain hitting interstate 80 there. so it will be slick out on the roads. that afternoon commute could be dangerous. so we want people to take those extra precautions to the north building up moments ago. bodega bay seeing a lot of

rain. same with rohnert park. you're next in line as this storm comes through. santa rosa, glen ellen, st. helena, as well. so it is going to impact the north bay. it was calmer there about 30 minutes ago. but it's all coming in, picking up moisture off the coast and moving inland. so. >> you can see the gloomy conditions out -- inland. so you can see the gloomy conditions out there now. san francisco 57 degrees right now. i'll track the rainfall for you coming up later on and let you know how much rain we're going to get from two storms this week. now to a developing story in the south bay. san jose police are looking for this man. take a close look at him. he is accused of robbing and sexually assaulting an employee at harker middle school. kpix 5's jessica flores spoke to police and school officials and they are now asking the public for help. >> reporter: officials here at harker middle school say the sexual assault happened at 6 a.m. before school started. the victim a teacher came in early to prepare her classroom for the first day back to school after winter break. san jose police officers are

beefing up patrols on campus at harker middle school and in the neighborhood, asking the public to look out for this man. surveillance video shows him wearing a black shirt and beanie. police say he was wandering halls at the private school for about two hours before entering a classroom, where investigators say he robbed and sexually assaulted a teacher. police say this is the suspect leaving the school. >> the other video that we provided to the public, he has since taken off that black beanie and the black t-shirt and i believe underneath is a white shirt that he is seen, um, leaving campus with. school had not -- was not in session at the time. >> reporter: the us is respect described as a man -- the suspect is described as a man in his 20s, 5'9", heavy build walking eastbound towards boynton avenue. >> i run and walk my dog early in the morning at that time. i come out here late at night. this is supposed to be a safe school. they have security here. >> reporter: harker middle school officials say they regularly review security protocols. in a statement, they say:

police are asking anyone who can identify the suspect to call 911 right away. >> we definitely want to get this guy off the streets. >> reporter: in san jose, jessica flores, kpix 5. pressure is building for the san francisco board of supervisors to appoint a new act mayor, one who won't run for office this june. board of supervisors president london breed became mayor when the late mayor ed lee died on december 12th. that's per city charter. but she is still the supervisor which disrupts the balance of city government and gives her an unfair edge when the new mayor is elected. the board's next meeting is january ninth. california's legislative session begins today and

lawmakers are expected to consider a new bill today aimed at utilities found liable for starting wildfires. the measure would prevent utilities from raising rates to pay fines, penalties and claims not covered by insurance. multiple lawsuits have blamed pg&e for the wine country wildfires, although the company has not been found liable at this time. today the secretary of homeland security will visit santa rosa to get an update on the recovery efforts in wine country. and this group in san francisco is calling out twitter's ceo jack dorsey calling him complicit after president trump used the social media platform to boast about the size and strength of his nuclear launch button. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec explains. >> reporter: there will be hey protest here outside of twitter headquarters this evening calling on twitter's ceo to take action to control president trump's tweets. yesterday, the president tweeted north korean leader kim jong-un just stated that the nuclear button is on his desk at all times:

>> donald trump is using his account to start a nuclear war with another foreign power. >> reporter: the group resist sf is calling on twitter to suspend president trump's twitter account. they have been projecting phrases on twitter's headquarters calling ceo jack dorsey complicit in what they claim is the president's dangerous threats. >> twitter is where he is most unhinged. it's where he talks to constituents. it's his bull horn. >> reporter: he is accused of endangering the world and violating the rules by not banning president trump. but a twitter spokesman told the business insider that the tweet doesn't violate its rules because it's not a specific threat. dorsey has previously defended the decision not to censor president trump saying his

tweets are newsworthy and important for political transparency. others think there are ulterior motives. >> they are handing this man a bull horn to create the news that then brings people to their site and that's unethical as well. >> reporter: the protest starts at 5:30 tonight here on market street in san francisco. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> while president trump is sending messages via twitter, north and south korea have a new way to communicate. a north korean spokesman announced on state tv that a hotline in korea's dmz was restored for the first time in nearly two years. the offer came after kim jong- un said that he was open to sending a delegation to next month's winter olympics down in south korea. but the white house is opposed to the talks unless north korea first abandons its nuclear program. >> kim jong-un may be trying to drive a wedge of some sort between the two nations, between our nation and the republic of korea. i can assure you that that will not happen. >> the u.s. could seek even more economic sanctions against north korea if they go through

with another missile test in violation of u.n. resolutions. and late breaking this morning, the president bashing former ally steve bannon after excerpts of his new went public. the president said bannon has lost his mind. we'll have that tonight at 5:00. lawmakers are running out of time to pass new protections for "dreamers" after the president's decision to end the daca program. jackie ward joins us now from the newsroom with the latest on the negotiations. jackie. >> reporter: emily, today some progress on capitol hill may be made that would restore protections for "dreamers" but any developments could also mean president trump would be one step closer to getting money for a border wall. congress has a little more than two months to come up with a legislative fix regarding the daca recipients daca program. lindsey graham wants it fixed now. >> the "dreamers" can have the life they dreamed of if the democrats and republicans can

give. we need the wall not a complete 2200-mile wall. we need border security, marry that up with the "dream act," there's a deal to be had on immigration. and i want do it in january. i don't want to wait until march. >> reporter: any deal to be made would go hand in hand with funding for a border wall. president trump says that without in a money, "dreamers" won't protected. but he is looking to help "dreamers" he said. >> we're not looking to citizenship. we're not looking at amnesty. we're looking at allowing people to stay here. >> reporter: homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen said a court of action includes how a dreamer could qualify for citizenship. last month republican arizona senator jeff flake said he expects this month to be productive. >> we're still looking at the bill, reading the bill and working on other issues, just came from a meeting on daca. so we're trying to get that moving concurrently with the

bill. it won't be voted on now. but january will be busy. >> reporter: daca supporters hope that means good news for "dreamers." >> this is about our lives. you're playing with our lives. this is something that really will separate families and will affect us all for all our lives. >> reporter: as it stands now, the daca program expires on march 5th. jackie ward, kpix 5. state lawmakers returned to sacramento today for the start of the 2018 legislative year. and sure to be on the agenda, the sexual harassment scandal plaguing the capital. debates will be held over protections for sexual harassment victims and the people who report misconduct. republican leaders have also said they want to work to repeal the controversial gas tax. democrats want to create a single-payer healthcare system. two democrats have been sworn into the u.s. senate today. doug jones of alabama and tina smith of minnesota. jones of course won last

month's special election in alabama. he narrowly beat republican candidate roy moore. smith was appointed to replace democrat al franken. franken resigned after being accused of sexual harassment. coming up, the royal wedding in may may boost briton's economy. >> and winter in most of the united states, where residents are bracing for bitter cold.

protests. the u.s. is calling for an emergency session now at the united nations to address that unrest. tens of thousands of iranians poured on the street for pro- government rallies but many were ordered to attend. 21 people have been killed and over 400 arrested. there are reports that protestors have been threatened with the death penalty. the trump administration has described iran's leaders as violent and corrupt. now to our storm watch. a deep freeze continues to grip much of the united states. snow fell this morning in tallahassee, florida. and even more snow is expected as it heads up the coast. a state of emergency has been declared in georgia. yesterday, in indianapolis, the city tied a 131-year record low of 12 degrees below zero. the falls were frozen this sioux falls, south dakota here where it was 1 degree fahrenheit early this morning. and in western new york, near white-out conditions were blamed for a deadly pile-up involving at least 75 cars. forecasters say that more than

two-thirds of the country woke up this morning to temperatures below 20 degrees. water officials are in the northern sierra now for the first of the snow surveys this year. they measured the water content of the snowpack. officials say state reservoirs are in good shape after last year's rains and peak rainy season has two months to go. here in the bay area, we don't worry about snow but we have rain coming. >> sierra snow will get a helping because of the storm systems that are coming through. not one but two this week, another one looking like it's going to arrive next week. so we definitely need that moisture. here's our hi-def doppler where the rain is coming down now for our region. grab the umbrella before you head out. looking like the north bay right now is getting rain coming through rohnert park. so highway 101, santa rosa, getting rain. so we saw about 30 minutes ago all of this was dry. so the storm picked up as it

came on land from the coastline. these are strong areas of rain in the yellow and orange areas and darker green raindrops coming through. route 80 with rain and martinez, as well. it's drier in downtown san francisco. east bay getting heavy rain. same with danville and livermore. but as you see here, daly city, south san francisco, millbrae, all dry right now. just a few raindrops that have been coming down there. so not as significant as the south bay. the past couple of hours san jose getting a good amount of rain. rain in san jose right now. so we are going to expect to

see rain and lightning this afternoon. drying up by tomorrow. then the next storm is expected to arrive tomorrow night. by 11 p.m., that's when round 2 should come in. and look how gloomy it looks across san francisco right now. temperature 57 degrees. livermore 54. san jose 56. so our wind speeds also are starting to pick up. west-southwest winds, hayward 11 miles per hour, a little stronger in san ramon. the wind speeds picking up as that storm comes through off of the coastline. so your futurecast looks like this. by 2 p.m., we'll continue to get some of those stronger cells. 3:00 also seeing widespread rain. 6 p.m. more instability in the forecast. so we could get some lightning strikes during the afternoon commute. of course we want everyone to be safe when you hit the roads and there's another storm in sight and that one is working its way from the north and that's the one that could bring us some more rain chances thursday night into friday. the weekend, though, mother nature is cooperating. if you have outdoor plans, because your weekend looks like nice and dry, temperatures will be in the upper 50s.

in the u.s. alone, amazon used 6,000 trucks and 32 planes to get packages to its prime members last year. but amazon says that they put a new focus on sustainable packaging moving over 100 million shipments from boxes to padded mailers in 2017. and then they released this video. >> we make those kinds of packaging easy to open, minimal waste 100% recyclable. as a result, to date, we have eliminated 181,000 tons of waste. >> amazon has a challenge in terms of packaging. it wants to be compact but it also wants to get the products to you intact. as for all the cardboard, recycling centers say it could take until february for all of it to be cleared out. it's the social event that everyone is talking about for 2018. prince henry and meghan markle's royal wedding [sic] and it may generate over half billion dollars for the
