point-4 earthquake shook the bay area overnight -- jolting people awake around 2:30 a-m... the quake was centered just a couple miles southeast of berkeley. i'm kenny choi. and i'm michelle griego. california's governor office of emergency services tweeted out quote: "no reports of damages from the region at this time." however, viewers are posting videos to twitter showing boxes that had fallen off a store shelf in a safeway store in san leandro. john wrote quote: "earthqauke took out some items..." he also posted these photos showing a panel that had fallen during the earthquake. but again as you can see from these photos and video-- any damage appears to be minor.

a very alarming way to wake up this morning we showed a few things at a store that fell off shelves. anything at your home? >> a couple things in the bathroom, but no damage. >> what about any neighbors? did you see any neighbors leaving their home? did you see anyone outside? >> it's pretty quiet. i'm about a mile from the epicenter reported. nobody out in a big panic. i'm sure there's people awake and lighting turning on all over the place. >> for a 4.4. thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you for having me.

we're tracking the impact from the earthquake. it's a 4.4 but still significant. >> oh, yeah, we heard it in the news room. kind of panic for the moment. here's the map. just occurred southeast of berkeley. about 2-miles is what the u.s. is reporting. a lot of folks felt it and surrounding regions in san francisco, many felt it as well. far north of sonoma. it was a 4.4. came in as a 4.7 and downgraded. southeast of berkeley. it's heyward falls. a lot of folks were sleeping it woke them up. maybe people working overnight, it jolted them out of their

seats. people stocking shelves felt it it's all across our region and we're getting reports from people who woke up from this. right now, no reports of damage or injuries we hope it stays that way. those are the latest details. dozens of people across the bay took to twitter reporting what they felt when the earthquake struck this morning. tyler tweeting out, that just woke me up. a rolling earthquake. a few seconds long. anyone else feel that? doug tweeting out, i can't remember the last time an earthquake woke me from a deep sleep. it had to be on the heyward fault. kids still asleep.

>> i did what you're not supposed to do. i jumped out of the chair and there was nothing hanging to drop on us. it happens so quick. stay in bed. put a pillow over your head. good to know. east of berkeley, i want to mention, that's the heyward fault line there. no tsunami threat because of the quake. it was smaller considering, 4.4. initially came in as a 4.7 and was downgraded. 2:39 in the morning. that wakes up a lot of people. it's nerve wracking. startled us and across the bay area. a lot of people felt it south and north. it was impactful way to start

the day. as a little scary. a little shaken up. >> if you want to get into your weather forecast, we're looking at the rest of the rain that came in yesterday. we're seeing just the remnants of the storm that moved off further east. you can see some areas of slush. for now across the region, we're noticing little spots of rain, you may notice it on your windshields this morning. it's not too significant. hopefully won't impact the roads and we'll have a smooth drive. looks like scattered showers if it's any that is measurable this morning. you can see it across the reno area. it's moving toward nevada you can see the areas of pink and white and that's snow and slush. not quite cold enough.

the ski resorts didn't get a lot, but the next storm should turn green into white. you'll see know across the higher elevations. looks like things are nice and calm and dry i want to show you the current conditions, pretty warm because of the cloud cover. 53 in concord. 54 in san francisco and in san jose. temperatures in the mid-50s, pretty warm for this time of the hour. looking at low 40s, even some 30s. as far as winds, breezy, ten miles per hour winds. coming out of the northeast, we're getting the off wind flow at 7:00 and 9. i'll talk about the next storm that will arrive and when it will get here it's happening soon. we have a few to talk about. >> thank you. right now, an advisory for bart

him and get his account and what he felt this morning. checking out the top stories this morning, a bart police officer opened fire after a confrontation between two men, now one of the men is dead. it happened during the evening rush hour. at the scene where they're raises questioning about who fired the shot. >> reporter: a witness said they heard arguing between the men. they heard shooting behind me. police are trying to piece together what led up to the gunfire. a shooting sent two men to the hospital. one has since died. >> we have bart police responding to emergency. shots were fired. >> a fully uniformed bart

police officer opened fire. >> both had gunshot wounds, we cannot confirm it was from the discharge of the bart officer's firearm the reason why, we recovered a firearm from the scene. >> reporter: police located that gun where the two men were before the officer showed up. this happened before 5:00 p.m. at 7th and chester streets. >> it was an argument between two guys and it turned into a shooting. >> reporter: she witnessed the argument between the men. she describes them as friends and in their late 30s. this was the scene after shots fired >> they had a disagreement and one shot my friend in the leg and the police shot and killed him. >> oakland police say it's a

criminal investigation. according to law enforcement, the officer has been sequestered for questioning. >> it's a sad situation because it's the beginning of the year and you want to stop a lot of black-on-black killings and stop police killings and be there for one another. >> the officer who opened fire was not injured in the shooting. bart service was not disrupted because of it. a stretch of highway 1 closed for about a year because of storm damage is about to re-open. the distance of about 4-miles for 11 months, crews have been working to restore access to the route along the pacific ocean. it's been frustrating for residents who had a difficult time getting in and out of their community. >> the community of people that come out here, we have kind of

please only call if you have an emergency. the emergency operation center tweeting out saying there's no reports of damage or injuries at this time this is along the heyward fault. we don't have any reports now of anything major there. >> so many students rattled by that. it seemed to have lasted a lot longer than was comfortable for a lot of us. startled nerves is how we're feeling. it was just two miles southeast of berkeley that's the epicenter on the map. initially started as a 4.7, downgraded to a 4.4 about an hour after it happened and when they determined the magnitude. it happened at 2:39 this morning near uc berkeley campus.

we saw some knocking of the items on store shelves at at safeway. we're tracking the rain we saw it come through yesterday, now it seems to be all moved out east you can see it winding down across the region. some scattered light showers this morning. santa rosa, seeing a few areas where rain drops are coming down and along highway 1. it may be wet on the roads, but nothing like yesterday. we didn't get much precipitation, but it did come down across the south bay and across the tahoe area some areas are turning into slush as we reach the early-morning hours it was well below average; 24%

below normal for snow across the sierra. we're hoping for more. there is a storm out on the horizon. that will arrive tonight while you're sleeping. the remnant, we're seeing some off-shore winds at 10. 9-mile-per-hour winds, east winds at 9 and look at napa, sustained winds. it's picking up speed. it's leaving behind some of the east winds here's our satellite radar to give you a glimpse of the cloud coverage we'll see cloudy skies today. some areas, we may get some sunshine as we wait for the next storm to arrive it's looking like a gloomy start to the day. temperatures won't feel too chilly we're in the low 50s. yesterday we were in the 40s. it's getting warmer as the cloud coverage keeps that warmer air

in place. 54 in san francisco. the wider view of what's to come as the storm moves out east, there's another one, this is coming up from the north and working its way down toward our area. it's going to impact the north bay first. you'll likely see it late tonight, 10:00 tonight, will low will bring us more rainfall. executiving -- it should begin to trickle showers, but anything throughout the day today. mostly sunny for parts of the south bay today. by 10:00, 11:00, midnight, we'll start to get the first band of the second storm 4:00 tomorrow morning, that's when more widespread showers occur. your morning commute tomorrow could be a wet one. 66 in concord and freemont. the temperatures are warmer than yesterday. we're above average by 10:00

and here's the seven-day forecast, you can see those scattered showers for the day today. tomorrow, more rain in store and by the weekend, nice and dry. continue with the outdoor plans. the next storm next week starting on monday night, tuesday. that's going to be bigger than anything we've just got. i'll explain that in a bit. that earthquake this morning is causing delays. not on the roadways, but with mass transit. so bart riders, eta, listen up, we have major delays expected for the first morning trains with bart that's -- while they're performing their track inspections and the routine checks. plan accordingly and we will keep you posted when those train get back on schedule. let's go to san jose, this is 101 at north first street, you can see traffic doing fine in both directions we're tracking a crash south.

we have southbound 680 at 101, the car hits the barrier, it's not causing any major slowdowns, you may see some flashing lights, we want to give the crews some room we're tracking an easy ride northbound, but 880, we had an earlier crash and it looks like it's causing slowdowns that was reporting that two lanes were blocked. our sensors have been fluctuating. now, speeds dipping below the limit as you approach highway 92. expect minor slowdowns. heading through oakland, looking okay in both directions. to the toll plaza, it's smooth and the ride along the east shore freeway is problem-free. right now the severe flu season is prompting hopitals to

take precautionary measures. visitors must be 16 or older.er as you can tell, from the video, there wasn't much to measure out there yesterday. the water resources only found an inch at phillips station, that's 3% of the average. another location we just finished, tamarac flat, we had a depth of 6 inches, 10% of the average. >> what a difference a year makes you can see from the side by side comparison last year, a lot more snow as you can see on the right. but officials say that a few big snowstorms can put it back on

east bay. you felt it pretty strongly. i thought someone was walking upstairs. sometimes that happens. you don't know. >> once you feel that ground and realize, oh, it's shaking under your feet, that's very scary for a lot of folks and definitely a rude wake-up call. so hayward fault is at fault. [ laughter ] >> so that's what happened here this morning. let's show you what's going on where it happened. the epicenter east-southeast of berkeley. that hayward fault line right there along the fault line. that does extend further southeast of oakland, as well. so that is to blame this morning. initially came in as 4.7 magnitude quake and then was downgraded to a 4.4 magnitude. at 2:39 this morning, it felt bigger. we got reports of people thinking it was the big one. and 4.4, at least there's no reports of damage or injuries as of right now.

it happened in a highly populated area. and it was felt all the way through the north bay, marin county, folks in the south bay as well also experiencing this, as well. so let's check in now with jaclyn because there's an issue now with transit this morning because of the quake. let go ahead. >> that's right. bart trains running at reduced speeds. this is so they can check all the tracks and it's all due to the earthquake this morning. we're also told that vta has -- you can expect delays along that line due to the routine checks from the earthquake. heads up for mass transit, plan accordingly. ace train is on time. we had an earlier accident that's still out there. this is southbound 680 right on the top of the ramp to southbound 101. one lane reported to be blocked. we are not seeing any significant slowdowns through that stretch. we are seeing slowdowns on
