headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, millions of people up and down the east coast are waking up to dangerously cold temperatures after a powerful winter storm pummeled the region with snow, ice, and wind. more than a foot of snow fell in many places across the northeast yesterday. in new england, coastal flooding reached historic levels. there have been at least 18 weather-related deaths. hena doba is here in new york with the very latest. hena, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. after the storm dumped several inches of snow here in the northeast, including here in columbus, now the east coast is bracing for a deep freeze. many residents in those states will be waking up to temperatures in the teens or single digits. hena, good morning r good a woman in massachusetts being rescued by a front loader. the first floor flooded, as if the snow brought by the bomb

cyclone weren't enough. others nearby also experienced historic flooding. >> it was pounding. it was hitting the seawall and going above the telephone poles. >> reporter: nearly 500 national guard members were called in for flood merges in several states. most are still digging out from the snow. plymouth, connecticut, got caught off guard by almost a foot and a half. >> we thought we were going to get about 6 inches. >> reporter: the accumulation in maryland was so bad in parts that even these two snow plows got stuck, and in noerkew york , the iconic lights and signs were barely visible at the height of the storm. even worse, this tractor trailer was left spinning its wheels while blocking an intersection. and while this storm has passed, more may lie ahead as extreme cold is expected to freeze anything that hasn't been shoveled away.

officials all day on the coast are asking people to stay off the roads. police officers in particularly warm weather states like here in south carolina are particularly worried about drivers who have never had to deal with icy conditions. >> unless you're driving a zamboni, you're not going to be able to control the vehicle, especially at higher speeds. >> reporter: many of the states hit with snow yesterday may be in for another round early next week as a system developing in the pacific northwest makes its way east. and forecasters are predicting with the bitter cold and high winds some areas, it will feel as low as minus 15 degrees. anne-marie. >> oh, that sounds absolutely awful. hena doba here in new york city. thank you so much. well, more than a thousand flights are already canceled today as airports up and down the east coast try to dig out from the snow and ice. nearly 5,000 flights were canceled yesterday. the blizzard paralyzed all three major airports in the new york area. jfk international airport was forced to close, and operations were shut down at boston's logan international airport. planes circled in the air looking for an open airport to land. one british airways flight had

to turn around and go back to london. the dangerous cold will be the problem today with windchill advisories in effect along much of the east coast. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the latest. >> after our major storm that brought accumulating snow from florida all the way up to maine, it's all about the cold now. a big bitter blast of cold air is coming right down out of the arctic and setting up shop along the great lakes, the northeast, and the coast. we have widespread windchill advisories and freeze warnings all the way down to west florida. so that care air extends all the way down to supposedly the sunniest spots. they'll be quite chilly by florida standards as we look at friday. here are your windchills. throughout friday, a lot of winds still being generated by that storm system and the windchill values will stay very low into the start of the

weekend. as for our high temperatures, not very high. many will be record-setting friday into saturday, anywhere from cleveland to boston where highs will stay in the single digits to start the weekend. do we want some good news. well, next week, a chance for some milder air to begin fighting back across the country. good old-fashioned anuary thaw a week after that. changes are coming. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. on to politics now. president trump reportedly pushed attorney jeff sessions not to recuse himself from the investigation into possible collusion between russia and the trump campaign. "the new york times" first reported the president told white house counsel donald mcgahn not to step aside. sessions recused himself in march. the "times" said when mcgahn was not successful, the president, quote, erupted in anger in front of the u.s. attorney general saying he needed him to protect

him. the white house did not respond to a request for comments. the explosive new book "fire and fury: inside the trump white house" went on sale at midnight. "business insider" author michael wolff's book sold out in one d.c. store in 20 minutes. president trump tweeted, i authorized zero access to white hou house. actually i turned him down many times for author of phony book. i never spoke to him for book. full of lies, misrepresentations, and sources that don't exist. look at his past and watch what happens to him and sloppy steve. the president's lawyers tried to block the release of the book after edwards' release this week. mola lenghi reports. >> reporter: president trump distanced himself from former chief strategist steve bannon thursday. he's quoted in a new book which is highly critical of the president. >> the big picture here is a picture of a white house that is chaotic, of a president whose impulses whipsaw the white house of a lot of backstabing, front

stabbing. >> reporter: on the russia investigation bannon says donald trump jr. and jarpd kushner were treasonous when they claimed to have dirt on hillary clinton in 2016. >> it gives validation to something the white house and the president have been trying to undermine. >> reporter: when news of the trump tower meeting first broke, president trump huddled with advisers on air force one to discuss how to frame the meeting, but that discussion may have cost the president one of his top lawyers. michael wolff writes trumt p campaign lawyer michael corallo resigned because he thought the "air force one" conversation brought about obstruction of justice. it would fall under mueller's investigation michael wolff also writes. president trump plans to meet with a bipartisan group of senators at the white house next week to try to work out an immigration deal. lawmakers are trying to come up

with a plan that extends the legal status of hundreds of thousands of d.r.e.a.m.ers who were brought to the u.s. ille l illegally. they face a deadline. and there's new uncertainty in the movement to legalize marijuana. attorney general jeff sessions rescinded a policy that eased enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states where the drug is legal. in a memo he said federal prosecutors can decide on their own how aggressively they enforce federal marijuana laws based on the demands of their district. the drug remains illegal federally even though some states have legalized it. colorado's u.s. attorney says his office will not change its approach to how it prosecutes marijuana crime. north korea and south korea have agreed to their first talks in more than two years on tuesday.

a seoul official said north korea accepted an offer to meet at a border village to discuss how to improve relations. this comes after the u.s. said it would delay joint military exercises with south korea until after the winter olympics. they will take place next month in south korea. the new year brought a new milestone on wall street. the dow jones industrial average closed above 25,000 for the first time ever yesterday. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. diane, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the milestone comes actually two months -- less than two mosses after it passed the 24,000 threshold in november. yesterday wasn't just a big day for the dow. all three major averages closed at new record highs. blue chips rallied some 150 points to reach 25,075. the s&p added nearly 11 and the nasdaq aidsed another 18 points.

there's a proposal to ban offshore drilling and a heating problem in baltimore schools. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the baltimore sun" said city schools have returned millions of dollars in state funds for heating repairs after the project grew too expensive or took too long. they've lost out on about $66 million on state money after approved repair projects didn't meet state regulations meant to prevent waste. the school system says it's received complaints about a lack of heat in 60 schools that has left children shivering. the "washington post" reports on president trump's plan to widely expand offshore drilling for oil and gas. it would allow drilling in most u.s. continental shelf waters and open up waters in california for the first time in more than three decades. the plan drew opposition from several governors including republican governors in florida and maryland. the "richmond

times-dispatch" reports david yancey won the tiebreaker for the house seat, but his opponent won't concede. it ended in a tie after the recount. yancey's name was pulled from a bowl yesterday to determine the winner. his victory allows republicans to keep a slim 51-49 majority in the house. simonds could ask for another recount. and the "houston chronicle" says nasa is launching a mission to study the little known boundary between earth and outer space. nasa will send a probe later this month to study the zone called the ionosphere. it will look at the impact and communications on the planet. and the britain's "guardian" says jewelry spanning 400 years in history was stolen in venice.

it is so cold in florida it's causing iguanas to fall from the trees. temperatures dipped below 40 in parts of florida yesterday. iguanas get stunned and get sluggish when it falls below 50 causing them to fall to the ground. many are still alive and move around again when they warm up. sea turtles also stiffen up in the cold. they float on the water and float to shore. wildlife officials have rescued over 150 in florida. on the "cbs moneywatch," tax season is upon us and new details about macy's and sears stores that are closing. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning again. >> good morning. two of the biggest department retail stores indicated which stores they'll be closing next. sears says 64 kmart stores and

39 sears stores will close between march and early april. this is in addition to the closure of about 250 store closings announced last year. macy's will shed some cutting about 5,000 jobs. it's about an overall plan to close some 150 places. the cdc is warning romaine lettuce may be linked to an e. coli breakout. the warning comes after 60 people were affected by e. coli bacteria. five were hospitalized and two died. the cdc says the outbreak started in mid-november. and tax season will begin monday, january 29th, mark your calendars. the irs said it will start accepting paper and electronic returns that day. the deadline to submit 2017 returns is april 17th. more than 155 million tax

and said, quote, it is full of lies, misrepresentations, and sources that don't exist. major security flaws have been found in the chips that power most of the world's computers and smartphones. jock john blackstone has details. >> reporter: since the earliest days of personal computing, the search for faster processing has been a prime focus. >> performance has always been the goal. >> reporter: but now security experts say that search for speed has resulted in serious flaws with the ominous names of "meltdown" and "spectre." >> there are billions of chips out in the world and they power everything from the biggest computers to maybe your cell phone. >> reporter: the flaw was discovered in the cell phone's so-called kernel memory and was designed to be used by users.

>> it's a design flaw in how these chips were designed. that's why many of these chips across many vendors are affected. >> reporter: the fear is that sophisticated hackers could steal passwords which would unlock private information on everything from personal commuters and smartphones to the cloud servers that used by almost every company that operates on the internet. so given that scale, how big is this problem now? >> you know, everybody in the world is racing to fix it or find out a way to take advantage of it. it is definitely a race between the attacker and the defender. in those races it's usually the attacker who has the advantage. >> reporter: in a statement chip maker intel says by the end of next week intel expects to have issued updates for over 90% of processor products introduced within the past five years. so far there's no evidence hackers have managed to exploit these flaws but intel says there's no easy fix.
