>> i want all the girls here watching to know that a new day is on the horizon. >> oprah winfrey steals the show at the golden globe and makes history. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump's former chief strategist steve bannon says he regrets not responding sooner to a book in which he slams the president and his family. this follows a weekend in which the president and his aides took every opportunity to undermine the book and bannon. and the president is defending his fitness for office. hena doba is here in new york. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. today president trump will spend a good part of the day talking about plans to boost economic development in rural communities. in the meantime he's calling that book "fire and fury" a fake book by a totally discredited author. president trump is back at the

white house after huddling with republican leaders at camp david over the weekend. they were discussing the gop's legislative agenda for 2018 while much of washington was still talking about "fire and fury," a new book that's harshly critical of the trump administration. >> the book is best understood as a very poorly written fiction. >> reporter: allies took to the airways to talk on the book's assertion that the white house had doubts about the president's intelligence and fitness for the job. >> i can tell you he's got the wherewithal to do things no politician has been able to do and in a good way. >> reporter: former chief strategist steve bannon is quoted extensively in the book. he used the words "treasonous" and "unpatriotic" when describes the president's campaign and relationship with russia. on sunday he took back some of what he said and he said his support is, quote, unwavering for the president and his agenda. some democrats dismissed the idea that the book is a work of fiction.

>> i don't think there's anyone in congress of either party is not at least privately has not expressed those concerns. >> reporter: today the president will be at nashville to speak at a farmers convention. tonight he'll go to georgia to watch them play in the college football championship. and the president had planned to announce his fake news awards today. in a quote he said, quote, instead the losers will be unveiled on wednesday." meryl streep and amy poehler were among several actresses to bring activists as their guests including tennis great billie jean king and the founder of the "me too" movement. >> that a new day is on the horizon. >> reporter: and oprah winfrey became the first black woman to be honored with the cecil b. demille award for her contributions to tv and film. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. this morning delays continue at new york's kennedy airport following a water pipe break that shut down one of the terminals. the pipe used to feed a sprinkler system burst yesterday afternoon. the break appears to be weather-related. about 3 inches of water flooded the floor of terminal 4. this was on top of thursday's big snowstorm that stranded thousands of passengers. >> having the arrivals area out

of commission for four hours on a busy sunday, particularly given the flights had been rescheduled, inconvenienced and will inconvenience many, many people and that is totally unacceptable. >> the authority which runs the airport says the storm and extreme cold created a cascading series of problems. some jets were stuck on the taxi ways for hours. those brutally cold temperatures on the east coast are expected to moderate today. the gradual warmup begins following another frigid night. meg oliver reports. >> reporter: days after a massive snowstorm's stinging temperatures continued sunday from south carolina to maine -- >> i never anticipated we'd get this cold and stay this blue for so long. >> reporter: -- new york city issued a cold blue for the homeless and shelters added beds. >> it's really been very demanding on us, and then you think about those that we serve. it's a matter of life and death

literally for them on the streets. >> reporter: in dorchester, massachusetts, flames at a five-alarmt fire burst out of a home in a block of ice. firefighters frosted over during the fight. in the nation's capitol, power outages and ruptured pipes are delaying the start of classes monday at howard university for at least a week. >> you don't want students to go there and start freezing and take away from the learning environment. >> reporter: the cleanup could take days. in boston, major on stijor obst, streets that have turned into rivers with floating ice chunks. with gusting winds at more than 100 miles an hour, new hampshire was the coldest on saturday. >> right now we're at 14 degrees below zero and 55 below. so really cold instead of bone-chilling cold out there on the summit this morning.

>> that was meg oliver reporting. >> in southern california this morning, heavy rain and wind threatened to trigger mudslides. residents prepared sandbags. areas were recent wildfires burned vegetation are particularly vulnerable. up to 4 inches of rain could fall in the foothills surrounding los angeles. evacuation orders have been issued for parts of santa barbara county. overseas north korea and south korea are expected to hold official talks tomorrow. they would be the first high-level contact between the two countries in more than two years. besides the relations between the two koreas, the talks are going to include talking about the winter olympics in the south. president trump said on saturday he would absolutely be willing to talk by phone with north korean leader kim jong-un. the u.s. navy is helping in the search for 32 crew members of an iranian oil tanker. they've been missing since saturday when the tanker collided with a freighter off

journal-constitution" says the naacp plans to protest president trump's appearance at tonight's college football championship game. mr. trump is expected to attend the game between georgia and alabama at atlanta's mercedes-benz stadium. the naacp is urging attendees to wave white towels and hold up anti-trump signs. the color white is meant to mock the snowflake label trump supporters used to criticize the president. "the new york times" reports israel is reacting with its own black list in response to the boycott of the country. they listed 20 organization yesterday. they'll bar the leaders for supporting an economic, cultural, and academic boycott against the jewish state. the list includes quakers, american friends conservative committee and the feminist group code pink. apple investors are urging

parents to address what they say is a growing problem of children getting addicted to iphones. janna partners and the california teachers retirement system control about $2 billion of apple's shares. they sent a letter asking apple to send out a new app and how excessive phone use impacts mental health. "union leader" said a store in merrimack sold the winning ticket. the owner of reeds ferry market says he doesn't know who bought the ticket. it's the second powerball jackpot in new hampshire in less than two years. a winning ticket for $487 million was sold at a store in raymond in 2016. stilt ahead, next generation smart glasses. the new glasses that will tell you everything you need to know with the help of alexa.

three years. the first augmented reality glasses that can talk to amazon's voice-assisted alexia debuts at the electronic show in las vegas the week. the smart glasses can talk to alexa and display information to the wearer like weather, directions, and sports scores. they'll be manufactured by vuzix corporation, a 75-person company based in rochester, new york. the glasses will set you back about a thousand bucks. there's a new box office champ. "jumanji: welcome to the jungle," was the easy winner bringing in $236 million in ticket sales. >> that full court 94-foot putt earned a clemson university student $10,000. christopher carns sank a putt during half time at clemson's game against louisville on saturday. carns jumped for joy with clemson's mascot after he made the putt. he said he's never played golf before. the nfl is looking into whether the panthers followed the concussion protocol after cam newton took a hit to the head. that was in the playoff loss to the new orleans saints. he tried to walk off but took a knee. the team said he got poked in the eye. >> reporter: mariota for the line of scrimmage. maybe across the line. it deflects back to him for a touchdown for the bonus. >> tennessee titans quarterback marcus mariota threw a touchdown

pass to himself in saturday's playoff win against the kansas city chiefs. the pass was deflected back to mariota who caught it and then dove into the end zone. that's the first time it's happened in an nfl playoff game. and a florida couple is asking the supreme court to go out on a limb and decide the fate of their $30,000 treehouse. they built the treehouse overlooking the gulf of mexico in 2011. they say the home building association told them they didn't need a permit. the city said they did need a permit to construct it. after it was built, they did need a permit and ordered them to tear it down. after a five-year court battle, they're turning to the supreme court. >> the supreme court is the last court of resorts, so -- >> and if it doesn't work out here -- >> if it doesn't work out, we don't even want to think about it yet. it's hard to think about it. especially when we knew we didn't do anything wrong.

defended his fitness for office insisting he's a very stable genius. more than half the country is seeing a spike in flu cases. 26 states are reporting high activity. john blackstone has more. >> reporter: emergency rooms are packed. ambulances are being redirected. and medical officials from chicago to california are sounding the alarm. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, in the past week, regions experiencing high flu activity increased from 21 states to 26 states and new york city. the number of states reporting widespread flu activity rose from 36 to 46, and in california alone, at least 27 people have died. the volume of flu patients at palomar health in san diego county has increased so much, a tent had to be set up to manage the influx. >> every year we do see an increase in flu-type patients.

this year it hit very hard and very quickly. what we compare it to was 2009 when we had h1n1. >> how are the volumes today? >> it's been busy. >> reporter: dr. alen hanson runs palomar's emergency department. he said on the hospital's busiest day, over 400 patients came in with flu-like symptoms. >> in san diego in the week during the holidays, there were about 3,000 new cases of flu. in the tent here, we're seeing upwards of 68 patients in a ten-hour time period. >> reporter: despite the flu strain, doctors are still encouraging vaccinations. >> even if you get flu and vaccinated, your severity is much less. you have less illness, hospitalizations, and lower risk of death. so even though it's not thought to have been quite as effective as in past years, it's still super, super important. >> reporter: john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. coming up on "cbs this
