jessica flores on the chain- reaction accident. >> reporter: the school bus was carrying a pregnant driver and seven children. they were headed toward allen horsedale elementary school. about 5 miles away. on san pablo dam road, chp said a nasty crash set off a chain reaction. >> for unknown reasons, the volkswagen slowed its vehicle. and in an attempt to avoid collision, the chevy clear veered -- chevy careered r -- veered off and spun out of control. >> it crashed and sent 15 people to the hospital. two in critical condition. witnesses rushed in to help the kids. >> the bus driver was pregnant, panicking. i did what i could. everybody was safe for the most part. but it was really pretty traumatizing to everybody. >> reporter: chp says doctors checked out the seven children on the bus. and each is doing fine. it's unclear how the pregnant bus driver is doing. but two others, one in the

white pickup truck, another in the crushed vw, face serious injuries. one possibly an internal injury. >> sounds like they were all traveling between 30 and 35, which -- with these wet roads, that may be too fast, especially when you're trying to avoid a collision and spinning out of control with the oils on the roadway and everything like that. it becomes very slick. >> reporter: chp is reminding drivers to slow down on slick roads. now to storm watch. neda has the latest on where all that rain is. >> yeah. our high-def doppler showing it is still raining out there. very light compared to this time yesterday. you can see the rain east of valet oavment right now, most of -- of the valley right now. for just, looks like just along interstate 80, near fairfield area, so you may run into some raindrops if you're headed in

that direction. and a little toth south of -- to the south of danville and clayton. these are areas of light wind chill. may want to keep that umbrella handy. seeing a light drizzle out there. but we are also getting plenty of cloud coverage as you see in our live coverage here. and look at these storm totals. over 3.3 inches from san francisco. now, from this morning to just now, we saw 3/100ths of an inch of rain. novato, 3.6. and oakland, more than 2 inches of rainfall. across the north bay, that's where we were really concerned. venado got almost 6 inches of rainfall. st. helena, more than 3. napa, more than 2. unitville -- yowntdville -- yountville almost 2 inches. southern california, central california, they also had those burn scars. and those are causing some significant problems now, especially near santa barbara,

where the thomas fire had burned. in fact, five people have been killed. several homes have been lost, due to mud slides there. danielle nottingham reports from santa barbara county. firefighters rescued a 14- year-old girl who is trapped in a montecito home that slid off its foundation this morning. officials say she was buried around massive mounds of debris for hours. search dogs are being used to look for more victims on the ground. from the air, the u.s. coast guard in ventura emergency crews pulled residents to safety. an avalanche of debris shut down 30 miles of highway 101, near carpinteria. >> the mudslide surrounded my car and pushed my car all the way to the left-hand side of the road. >> reporter: with the muddy mess, the winter storm flooded creeks and roadways from santa barbara to los angeles counties, trapping cars and people. thousands of people were forced to evacuate again, after

surviving several recent wildfires. >> reporter: people whose homes survived the thomas fire are now faced with this. impassable roads and driveways filled with mud. >> . >> i thought, i just can't do it again. i didn't know it was going to be this bad. >> reporter: neighbor says the furious storms storms and mud flow shook down their homes. >> it sounded like a freight train, coming right by the house. >> reporter: officials are blaming a transformer explosion, causing several homes homes to catch fire. danielle nottingham, cbs news, carpinteria, california. meanwhile, a storm-damaged roadway in santa claisha is -- claire is -- clara is reopened today. crews spent months repairing a 200-foot section of that roadway. this is what it looked like. construction crews repaired the highway by building three retaining walls. they also used lightweight

neighborhoods. she used to serve on the board of education. >> i think my track record sets me apart from my other candidates. >> reporter: here's a look at some of them. angela alioto. dennis herrera and mark leno, who filed his papers yesterday. >> i intend to shake things up. >> between now and june, the board of supervisors can vote to name an interim mayor to serve in the election on june 5th. kim says he should do it full time. >> i love to see someone who can continue to lead. and effectively implement our policies and services during this time. >> reporter: she declined to say who that might be. any interim mayor would need 6 of the 12 supervisors' vote. >> even after tonight's 5:00 deadline, it's not over yet. they had the -- until they've had the opportunity to file

their paperwork on april 9th. some local lawmakers, pushing net neutrality is pushing for internet service providers here in california. >> and here to ensure access to free, fair and open internet, with sb460. this is a critical issue for california, not just because it's an issue of equity. although that is, we care passionately about equity. but also that it is crucial. >> it would make it possible for broadband providers providers to block service. >> we cannot allow this to outweigh the public good, the public interest in a free, egalitarian and public interest. >> they would also establish new rules to enforce net neutrality. and the president is focusing on immigration reform,

during a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers today. but there are some issues that must be overcome, in order to reach compromise. reporter weijia jiang tells us, if they don't, a government shutdown is still a spoability -- possibility. >> president trump is making his top priority crystal clear. >> i think everyone agrees we have to have border security. i don't think anyone would say no. >> reporter: the president wants congress to pay $18 billion to build his border wall. >> oh, no, mr. president, you campaigned on a wall that mexico would pay for. we're waiting. >> reporter: in return, he's willing to help provide legal protection for daca recipients. the so-called dreamers, who were drought to the u.s. illegally as children. >> this should be a bipartisan bill. this should be a bill of love. truly. should be a bill of love. >> reporter: democrats could play hard ball themselves by tying protections for the dreamers to a government spending bill. >> reporter: congress has until

january 19th to pass a new spending bill. without it, the government will shut down. >> if the democrats want to shut down the government because they can't get amnesty for illegal immigrants, then they're going to have to defend those actions to the american people. >> reporter: democrats say they don't want a government shutdown. and will negotiate in good faith until an agreement is reached. weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. the first direct talks between north and south korea in more than two years appear to be paying off. northnorth korean diplomats walked to meet their counterparts in the south. they then announced north korea will send athletes to the winter olympics next month in south korea. >> i'm seeing a lot of political will in pyongyang and seoul. that they are serious about dialogue. and really, they're talking about more than the winter olympics, but they have to take this step by step. >> reporter: as part of the deal, the south has asked that

was moderator for face the nation in 2016. he will transition to anchor chair, as cbs news prepares to name his successor. a new proposal would pake the state a sanctuary for cannabis. it would allow marijuana dispensaries to continue selling to anyone 21 and older, without fearing about being raided. the only difference here, local and state law enforcement would be barred from helping federal drug agents. without a court order, the feds would not be able to arrest people complying with marijuana laws. but will they be able to still go after illegal pot shops. >> we will still go after them. it will, in fact, close down the illegal marijuana operations. >> the bill is moving through both houses. and advocates are confident the

government will sign it -- governor will sign it if it gets to his desk. dow is up about 132 oints. let's get a check on the forecast with neda. >> here's what's going on. we are still seeing rain coming down. very, very light. but san jose seen some raindrops. so i want to show you some of the spots that are still dealing with showers. very light showers in fairfield. right along interstate 80. south of fairfield, east of vallejo as you see there. this band coming through. but most of it is going to wind down or head further east. east of walnut walnut creek. it's been really spotty showers throughout the morning. got about a few hundredths of an inch of rain. but that's about it. for the morning. yesterday, those totals really did add up. campbell, san jose, still seeing just a drizzle. here's a live look at our cliff house camera. you can televisionally see cloudy conditions out there. look at big sur total.

almost near 10 inches of rainfall. oakland almost 3 al -- 3 1/2. and pacificca, 4.3 inches. over 5 inches of rainfall. pretty good storm total from the storm system that lasted mainly for 24 hours or so. then it just turned into drizzle. so for your future cast by 3:00 this afternoon, we'll keep seeing the great clouds out there. great breaks possible for san francisco. but drizzle for the afternoon hours expected. then things are going to clear up. then look at this tomorrow morning. there's another chance of light showers. especially across the north bay. as the storm system dips down from the north. but that one, not expecting to bring measurable precipitation. here's a live view of san jose. temperatures in san jose, 57. santa rosa at 60 degrees. our temperatures right now are pretty much where we're going to be at for the afternoon highs.

visibility also pretty important, san jose, down to 1.3 miles am but a lot of this patchy fog, still along the valley areas. half moon bay also, seeing the fog out there as well. so low clouds, high clouds. also, we are seeing some of our cameras bouncing around. west winds at sfo at 16 miles per hour sustained now. 10-mile-per-hour winds. and our highs again, very similar to our current condition. mid- to upper 50s and low 60s for the highs. and then we're going to be met with high pressure. so starting thursday, really, all of this is going to move in. that means sunshine in our forecast through the weekend. there's another storm out there. but not until monday of next week. and that is a look at your forecast. winfrey's words at the golden globes could have doubled as a campaign rally cry. next, gayle king sets the record straight.
