the president said he's not worried. and e-cigarettes may not be as safe as you think. in fact, vaping may be toxic and a gateway for teen smoking. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning authorities have yet to figure out why a student walked into a rural kentucky high school and started shooting. two students at marshall county high school were killed. witnesses say the young gunman started firing with a handgun and he did not stop until he ran out of ammunition. in all, 16 were shot, four were trampled as students and faculty ran for their lives. police arrested the 15-year-old suspect within minutes without incident. john schiumo is here in new york. with the latest. john, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. this is the first deadly school shooting in the united states this year. the suspect's identity is not

being released at this time, and the motive is unknown. officials in kentucky are asking that the 15-year-old responsible for the deadly high school shooting in the on of btown of yesterday be tried as an adult. >> he's going to be charged with two counts of murder and multiple accounts of attempted murder. >> the court records are sealed. they'll be made public if he's tried as an adult. police are still trying to figure out why the suspect walked into marshall county high school just as classes were starting, pulled out a pistol, and began shooting, hitting more than a dozen other students. >> i took off my headphones and turned around and everyone was just broken up. they were running. i saw the flashes from the gunshots. and by that time i was just running. >> it took first responders less than ten minutes to reach the school. witnesses report seeing the suspect trying to flee after running out of bullets. police say he was brought into custody without incident.

dusty cornbacher owns the florist across the street from the school. she saw the entire scene play out across at the school. >> you never think it's going to happen here. i'm sure that sandy hook and other places feel the same way, and yet we're almost jaded because there are so many. you're not all that surprised anymore unfortunately. >> the police have identified the two students killed, both 15 years old. whaley nicole holt died at the school, preston died at the hospital. now, the 20 injured, five are in critical condition, two of them suffering from severe head wounds. anne-marie? >> john schiumo here in new york. thank you so much, john. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with student tristan klein who arrived at the school as other students were fleeing the gunman, and he'll tell us what he saw and how he helped one of the wounded. president trump heads to the economic forum in davos,

switzerland, today, where protectionism is making headlines. in washington, the headlines are about loyalty. it's reported that shortly after he fired fb i director james comey, he asked for the acting director andrew mccabe. who he voted for in the election. mccabe said he didn't vote. it's also important that robert mueller's office wants to interview the president and we now know robert mueller spoke to attorney general jeff sessions last week. major garrett has more on that. >> in the oval office president trump said he was not worried about what attorney general jeff sessions said even though he had not spoken to him. >> no, i'm not concerned. >> reporter: this public face of calm came amid the disclosure that james comey was interviewed in december. he was fired in part because of the investigation. according to sources comey took notes he shared with president

trump before the firing, recounting that mr. trump sought comey's loyalty and explored the possibility of ending a then pending investigation of normal national security adviser michael flynn. press secretary sarah huckabee sanders. >> there was no collusion, there's nothing to it. we're ready to move on. >> reporter: mueller's questioning of comey is not about collusion but potential obstruction of justice. the white house claims the investigation is biased. at a white house meeting monday attended by sessions, white house director don mcgahn and fbi director christopher wray, the main topic was five months of missing text messages between high-level fbi employees, some of which have been released publicly and do show a pattern.

white house spokesman said the president believes former leaders such as director comey and others he empowered have tainted the system. reporters asked the president if wray threatened to resign in protest. >> no, he didn't at all. he didn't. he did not even a little bit, nope, and he's going to do a good job. >> mueller and the president's lawyer are still negotiating over how and when an interview with mr. trump will occur. white house lawyer ty cobb told us the president is, quote, very eager to be interviewed by mueller and such encounter will likely occur in the coming weeks. major garrett, cbs news, the white house. a /* also in washington, senate minority leader chuck schumer withdrew the offer to build a border wall. the offer was made during last week's budget negotiations. the president tweeted cryin' chuck schumer fully understands especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no

wall, there is no daca. we must have safety and security, together with a strong military, for our great people. schumer is taking heat from some fellow democrats for not holding out for more in the budget deal. >> we're a lot better off today when it comes to the cause of d.r.e.a.m.ers than we were four or five days ago. when there's a republican president, a republican senate, a rb houepublican house that ar quite recalcitrant about d.r.e.a.m.ers, you're not going to get it all at once. larry nassar who pled guilty to assaulting student athletes will be sentenced today. more of nassar's accusers will talk today as well. over 150 have confronted him or had their statements read so far. he faces a minimum of 25 to 40 years in prison. and the ncaa has opened an

investigation into how michigan state university handled nassar's case. cbs news has learned that the family of 13 children who underwent years of torture at the hands of their parents will be split up in foster care. the six minors will be moved to different homes and the seven adults will be placed in assisted facilities. prosecutors say the siblings were beaten, starved, and restrained with ropes. american citizens were among the victims at a taliban attack at a hotel in kabul, afghanistan. it began saturday night and lasted until sunday afternoon. the exact number of americans killed or injured was not available. 11 of the 14 foreigners accused killed had previously been identified as working for a private afghan airline. and it turns out the 7.9

"the philadelphia inquirer" reports pennsylvania congressman pat meehan saw a former aide as a soul mate but denights he sexually harassed her. the 62-year-old settled the has rasment claim last summer with the senator's money. he says he developed a deep affection for the much younger woman and reacted badly when she began dating another man. the ethics committee has launched an investigation. ursula k. le guin wrote the award-winning book. she wrote the book "last night of darkness." it explored androgyny and was

one of the first books in the genre of feminine science fiction and also wrote the earth sea series. le guin died monday at hoer home in portland. she was 88. the "los angeles times" says the national transportation safety board will investigation tesla's crash system. a tesla traveling 55 miles an hour crashed into the back of a parked fire truck on a california freeway monday. the driver said autopilot was on at the time. there were now injuries though. tesla's autopilot system was a contributing factor in a fatal crash in florida in 2016. "the state" says south carolina lottery may have to pay out a $35,000 win because of a christmas day glitch. some 42,000 winning tickets were mistakenly printed out during a two-hour period. each winning ticket paid at least $500. lottery officials want an investigation before deciding whether to pay the winners. and "sports illustrated" reports that lebron james passed

replacing current chair janet yellen. powell has served 5 1/2 years on the fed's board, is viewed as a centrist, and is favored by both democrats and republicans. he favors easing bank regulations, especially for smaller banks. the just enacted tax reform legislation is a boon for some disney employees. 125,000 disney workers will get a $1,000 bonus due to the new law. disney is making a $50 million investment into education programs for employees. the bonus applies to any full- or part-time employees who have been working for disney before january 1st. uber hires its first chief diversity officer. bo young lee was the inclusion officer hired in march. her hiring is the latest outgrowth following an inquiry into uber culture by former
