headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump reportedly wanted to fire special counsel robert mueller and only backed down after a white house lawyer threatened to resign instead of carry out the order. this happened last june, according to "the new york times." hena doba is here in new york with more on this story. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. according to the paper president trump demanded mueller's firing. "the new york times" citing four people familiar with the request by the president. according to "the new york times" president trump ordered the justice department to fire special counsel robert mueller last june. the president reportedly cited conflicts of interest, including that mueller had been interviewed to return as fbi director the day before he was appointed special counsel. "the new york times" says president trump only backed off

when white house counsel donald mcgahn threatened to quit. >> the president cannot directly remove the special counsel. what he can do, however, is order deputy attorney general rob rosenstein to fire special counsel robert mueller. >> congress has asked about this prospect several times. >> if you were ordered today to fire mr. mueller, what would you do? >> as i explained previously, i would follow the regulation. if there were good cause, i would act. if there were not good cause, i would not. >> you've seen no good cause. >> correct. >> the "times" says mueller learned of the threat while pursuing an inquiry. before leaving for switzerland wednesday evening president trump told reporters he's eager to speak with mueller under oath. >> and the white house has not commented on the "times" report. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. ahead on "cbs this morning,"

we'll talk with senator cory booker, a member of the senate judiciary committee which is investigating russian interference in the 2016 campaign. well, the president is pushing his america first policy at the world economic forum in davos, switzerland. he describes his time at the conference as very successful. he addresses the summit this morning. gave inramon is in london and has the latest. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. all eyes are on president trump as he delivers his keynote address. he claims that america is booming and that his america first approach will soften the mood in davos. as president trump begins day two in davos, a controversy from back home threatens to make for a very awkward meeting today. mr. trump's alleged use of a profanity when referring to people from african nations could come up during talks with the rwanda president.

president trump then wraps up his visit with a keynote speech. why he's expected to tout his america first policy, a policy some leaders are hoping will soften. >> of course, it will be america first, but if he could add on, but not alone or america first and we need cooperation with the rest of the world or whatever, that could be nice. >> at the conference built for global free trade, president trump insists his message is being well received. >> there's been a lot of warmth, a lot of respect for our country, and a lot of money, billions and billions of dollars is coming into the u.s. >> reporter: the president also made news thursday by threatening to withhold aid money to the palestinians unless they resume peace negotiations with israel. while trump has also said that he's prepared to apologize for retweeting posts from a far right group banned in the uk. he said he didn't want to be involved with people like that. those in davos will watch

closely his address hopefully he'd go beyond the rhetoric and provide details about his plan. >> indeed not those just in switzerland but here as well. not even is pleased with president trump's proposed plan to offer a passport citizenship for nearly 2 million undocumented immigrants known as d.r.e.a.m.ers. some democrats and conservatives blasted the proposal. the white house plan would also protect young immigrants brought to the u.s. by parents from deportation. mr. trump had previously ruled out citizenship for d.r.e.a.m.ers. senator lindsey graham called the proposal an encouraging sign. >> i think the pathway to citizenship is very much within the realm of possibility. clearly you need strong border security, but the bottom line, think i that was a break through. >> the white house plan comes with a cost. in exchange the president wants $25 billion to build a border wall and a sharp limit on legal immigration through families. well, those missing text

messages between two fbi officials who had worked for special counsel robert mueller have been found. the department of justice confirmed it had been missing five months worth of text messages between peter strzok and lisa page. they had been criticized for sending texts that were anti-trump. the doj say they used forensic tools to recover the messages from fbi devices. and more fallout following the sentencing of former gymnastics team doctor larry nassar. the u.s. olympic committee has given the saus jim ngymnastics six days to resign. it must be in place by february 28th and usa gymnastics must cooperate with the independent investigation on whether anybody knew about nassar's abuse and didn't report it. in a statement usa gymnastics says, we understand that the rekwiefrmts imposed by the letter will help us enhance our

ability to build a culture of empowerment throughout the organization with an increased focus on athletes' safety and well being. a deadly fire swept through a south korean hospital this morning. at least 37 people were kill. the fire broke out in a first floor emergency room. smoke and flames quickly spread. most of the victims died of suffocation. three hospital staff were among the dead, and more than 100 others were injured. 14 are in serious condition. there were no sprinklers in the hospital and the cause of the fire is under investigation. well, the suspect in the kentucky high school shooting is being held on preliminary charges of murder and assault. last night a prayer vigil was held for the victims. two students were killed and 18 others injured on tuesday. the 15-year-old suspect appeared in court yesterday. officials are trying to determine a motive. prosecutors want to try him as an adult. well, coming up on the "morning news" now, oprah winfrey rules out the presidency

the honolulu "star advertiser" reports the hawaii state employee who mistakenly sent out a false missile alert is refusing to cooperate with the federal and state investigators. the s.e.c. committee chief says she hopes he will talk with them. it caused wide-spread panic across hawaii earlier this month. the watch post reports the dooms day clock is now just two minutes to midnight. the symbolic point to a nuclear pont. it is the closest it is the closest it has been since 1953 at the height of the cold war. scientists cite the failure of president trump and other world leaders to deal with threats of nuclear war and climate change. blue chips lost some ground after president trump said he favored a stronger dollar, contradicting comments by treasury secretary steven mnuchin. ultimately the dow jumped 140 points. the s&p 500 edged up 1 point, while the nasdaq fell almost 4 points. walmart is cutting over 500 jobs at its arkansas headquarters earlier this week. they also shut 63 sam's club warehouses in order to keep pace with amount zon. they plan to sell ebooks and audio books. a setback with philip morris on a device they want to sell in the united states. it's already sold in more than 30 countries marketed as a reduced risk tobacco product. they voted down several statements philip morris wants to use to market the product in the u.s. but the fda can still allow the product to be sold in this country.

our top stories this morning. it's reported that president trump tried to fire special counsel robert mueller last june, but mr. trump backed down when white house lawyer don mcgahn threatened to resign, according to "the new york times." the "times" reports mr. trump demanded mueller be fired weeks after he was appointed. and the olympic committee says the entire board of the usa gymnastics must resign or face decertification. the usoc is also calling for additional training for the gymnastics staff following the sentencing of dr. larry nassar for sexually abusing more than 150 girls and women.

wouldn't put her in it and that makes me really sad. >> reporter: in a youtube video she blames usa gymnastics and adults. >> you need to change your practices. >> reporter: they're stepping up efforts to ensure the safety of its athletes. this owner spent $20,000 for additional surveillance cameras. >> as we looked at everything, we said, okay, do we have enough security cameras in place to make sure that everything is being filmed. olympic gold medalist shannon miller says usa gymnastics needs to make major changes in order for the sport to move on from larry nassar. >> i do not think that we should let this one man, this horrible man, determine where this sport goes, but i think at the end of the day, it is not gymnastics that's the problem. it's the people. it's the process. it's the procedures that failed these women. >> the owner of the club in rochester says she talks to her athletes about sexual abuse.
