today we're going to talk with two very interesting people from the archdiocese of san francisco who are going to tell us about one of i hello on behalf of the archdiocese of san francisco, welcome to mosaic. today we will talk with them to vary interesting people from the archdiocese of san francisco who will tell us about one of life's greatest pleasures. i won't make you guess what that pleasure is. it is the pleasure of generosity. it is the satisfaction of sharing with others. it is a deep fulfillment that comes with being a responsible member of a community of self giving people who build relationships and enrich the lives we share before we get to our guests, i want to point out and say thank you for an important instance of this sort

of generosity, sharing and community building. that is the program you are watching now. the mosaic television show has been a gift from kpix5 to the community for decades. as a new year began, i looked into the dust archives and the best sources informed me that mosaic first hit the air in 1980, which means we are in the 38th year of enjoying kpix5's wonderful gift to the community, that gives a voice to diverse faith perspectives in the san francisco bay area. on behalf of the roman catholic archdiocese of san francisco and the catholic people of our three counties, thank you to the kenni choi management and all the staff that helped us create this show each month. today, we have with us, two experts on the importance of sharing and the rewards of giving. after this brief break, please re- join us for an interesting conversation on today's mosaic. development. these two partners work together and collaborate at the deep basis of that work they do is an important thing called money. they both have to deal with that. more importantly, they deal with developing the relationships that can sustain and support the catholic mission. this means individual relationships. so rod, you are director of development. maybe you can define for us, what development means. >> at its core, development is about relationships, as you touched on. i like to define it as creating and deepening relationships between persons and a particular organization. fundraising is a little part of it. fundraising is a derivative. even that, i look at fundraising as giving people who have a relationship, the opportunity to invest in something that they care about deeply.
5:35 am
>> that sounds great. how long have you been with the archdiocese? >> i have been with the archdiocese for about seven months. started in early june of 2017. >> i know you have been a great presence throughout the office. and in the first couple of months, you visited every parish in the archdiocese? >> virtually every parish. i was born and raised and went to school in the archdiocese, born in pacifica -- grew up in pacifica. a member of st. peters. now i am with thing gregory's parish in san mateo. i have been there about 25 years. it was a treat for me to be on the other side and visit all these parishes and our three counties i have heard about. it was a fabulous experience and very educational from a professional standpoint. personally, a wonderful experience as well. >> and a kind of model of your principal. you don't sit in the office and do stuff. you build relationships. tell us about what you saw.
5:36 am
>> it was very interesting. it was a great joy and honor to be in a position to represent and advocate the ministries of the archdiocese. and going out and learning about the parishes. there were about three things that emerged. one was, i heard a lot from the office staff about how we can better serve and assist them, both in development and the archdiocese office as a whole. i also learned about better ways in which we can communicate the needs of the archdiocese, most notably with regard to the appeal. how we can more effectively communicate what it is the appeal was getting to. and most significantly, i was overwhelmed by all of the wondrous good works that go on in all of our parishes. having been born and raised in the archdiocese, i did not know all the wonderful wonderful things that go on at our various paras is in terms of outreach. >> good people here. >> and florence, you have a longer history in the
5:37 am
archdiocese? >> this is my tenth year working for the archdiocese of san francisco. i originally and am still with the office of development with stewardship. >> so a new initiative -- fairly new initiative. let me ask about you first pick you have an exotic background. where are you from and how did you get here? >> i was born and raised in the philippines. i moved to america when i was 23 years old. >> about -- >> a couple years ago. >> a number of years, yes. i originally moved from state to state until about 20 years ago. my husband was assigned to northern california and this is where we have stayed and hope to stay forever. >> very nice. i know you lived elsewhere and had a career in advertising and business management and now working for stewardship in the
5:38 am
archdiocese. and you decide what -- define what stewardship is it? >> it is a spiritual transformation. we focus on scriptures and faith formation. it is more about realizing that everything we have in our life is a gift from god and out of gratitude, we give back to god. that is our responsibility -- our response to god's generosity to us. >> when you hear the word -- and it is an unusual word -- i don't know if most catholics are aware of it but you think about the new testament. and you talk about the steward -- the steward who did the wrong thing. it is a clear message that we are, in some sense, that jesus sees us as stewards of god's gift does not necessarily
5:39 am
owners or disposers. it doesn't leave you with us. >> even in genesis, adam and eve were stewards of the earth. >> from the beginning. >> i give this to you but you are supposed to manage this and give it back. that is out of your gratitude and out of love. that is your response to the gift that was given to you. >> we will get into the details of how you do that. i found, in the catholic catechism, this notion about stewardship. i wanted to read it to you. it comes under jesus's commandment of love your neighbor as yourself. the catholic catechism -- the right of private property does not do away with the original gift -- of the whole of mankind. the universal destination of goods remains primordial. and the ownership of any property makes a steward of providence. what is the task of making it fruitful and communicating its benefits to
5:40 am
others. >> exactly. >> very interesting. a little bit about what stewardship is for the diocese. >> we just started stewardship in the diocese in 2016. we are -- actually we have six parishes that have converted to stewardship. again, stewardship is a way of life. it is not a program. that is why we say it is conversion. conversion of mayans and the spiritual minds of people. so we have, right now does the six -- we were working with. we have our own smaller program that we run -- which iran with our moderator. we want -- we run this program with -- right now there is saint augustine's --

5:44 am
florence is talking about stewardship as a way of life and sharing of gifts with others. you have seen examples of that, having you? >> i have seen extremely vivid examples of that. it has been inspiring to me. a couple of note -- and i was not aware of any of these prior to my journeys. saint anthony in redwood city, six days a week, feeds 700 people. no questions asked. st. charles and san carlos -- for 25 years, they have gone to mexico to build homes. saint rita and fairfax has gone to help with tutoring programs. it is really a very vivid and vibrant demonstration of people sharing their time and talent. and it was inspiring to me. i think it is a great source of pride for all of us. it is wonderful. >> you mentioned that the stewardship initiative is somewhat new. the concept seems to be somewhat new, at least to me. you have a historical model on how this works. >> it is the diocese of
5:45 am
wichita -- >> wichita, campus -- kansas? >> yes. they have been doing this for the last 40 years. in 2015, the archbishop sent three of us to see what the stewardship way of life is all about. and we were inspired when we came back. they have people with standing room only in church. all the way to the vestibule. they have 17 parishes that have money for seven adoration. they have those just like what we have here but on a bigger scale -- exceeding 2500 people and dinner every day of the year. that is run by 70 volunteers on
5:46 am
any given day. the volunteerism is very high. they have a parish that has about 2000 volunteers in one parish. the parishioners are very engaged in the parish. they are very welcoming. you go into a parish. they don't know you. they say, you are new or what is your name or would you like to go to lunch. all the sudden, there is a sense of attachment to the parish. living their life as catholics -- it is -- not going to church is an obligation. it is their way of life. part of the dna. good habits were learned and continued. >> and it sounds like -- you talked about giving people relationships in which you can invest -- and also sounds like -- it
5:47 am
sounds like there is money involved in the good works being done. i am wondering how money shows up in the picture of stewardship. i am not guessing that the diocese of wichita is a rich diocese full of givers. >> there are three focuses of stewardship. the main -- core of stewardship is being grateful. so when you are grateful, what do you do? you share. you share your time. you build your relationship with christ and god by praying. that is sharing your time. 10% of your time like one hour a day goes into prayer and building the relationships. you share your talent by volunteering. and of course when you are grateful, you are sharing what you have financially.
5:48 am
and you cannot help but share something that is a part of you -- and your church is a part of you. you are generously giving to the church. in wichita, it is 10%. they give 10% of their income to the church. and the church gives 10% of their income to the diocese. the diocese shares 10% to the bigger church. >> i understand one of the benefits of this ground-level participation -- every person and every parish funds the school system without having to charge tuition. more catholic goods and benefits are available to everyone because of this -- investment and commitment. it sounds wonderful. it is something we would be trying to establish in the archdiocese of san francisco. >> that is something we would like to achieve but it is not
5:49 am
something we expect to happen overnight. some of are spas -- some of our stewardship practices are saying they will offer faithful mission classes does just giving back to the community. supporting faith formation for the children. we know that when the children are formed, that is when we get seminarians and vocations. they are formed at a young age. that is why, in wichita, they have about 58 seminarians in a population of about 100,000 catholics. >> as rod was pointing out, the vibrancy and the generosity of these parishes is remarkable. if you tune into that -- as you said, convert to a stewardship model, things could even be greater then they are. but you see a lot of generosity. and you have told me the feeling of satisfaction about being part of a community that
5:50 am
knows it is generous and being useful. this is what i heard from you when you told me about this. >> there is a great sense of pride among the parishioners and they are, as you say, a part of something that is bigger than the geographic community, if you will. that is something i have learned as i have gone throughout the archdiocese and spoken to or with parishes and hearing about what goes on at their brother and parishes beyond what they do themselves. it kind of infuses all of us and all of them without sense of pride and being part of something that is more grand and bigger and doing good. >> we are going to take a short break. we will come back and talk more about development, stewardship and how to make them work.

archdiocese of san francisco. they both talked about import new initiatives. you are important -- you are in charge of the initiative on stewardship which is a conversion to a stewardship way of life. i think catholics tend to think they are already catholic. and rod, you are new at the job and talking about making the relationships, building relationships and showing opportunities for investment in true value, spiritual value. maybe you can tell us about what your current initiatives are and how people can get involved. >> for most at this time, there are a couple of things. when the arch bishop circle began 18 months ago -- it is really -- an entity in which persons can give money to projects and initiatives that are set forth by the archbishop himself. things that he deems to be priorities. in the current year, there are such things as giving to seminarians at the hispanic school leadership. stewardship is one of them. things of that sort. going forth, talking about and assistance fund for deacons and
5:54 am
marketing for catholic schools as well as seminarians. it will always be a blend between current needs and future desires. >> i noticed there is a quarterly newsletter. very interesting stories for members of the circle. and on our topic of satisfaction in giving, stories by people about what it means to them to be a giver of this -- they enjoy it. >> they do enjoy it. and they enjoy being with their fellow circle numbers. they enjoy the sense of spirituality. it has been a fulfilling experience. we have learned this from the members of the circle. our other priority would be the archdiocesan annual appeal which kicked off two weeks ago. it has a number of priorities that i'm sure many of the parishioners might be familiar with, in a general sense. there is one story i enjoy telling. i think it crystallizes the tremendous benefits of the appeal. some of the monies from last
5:55 am
year's appeal went to the maker space initiative which very simply brings science and technology to life. >> in the grammar schools? >> yes. i went to good shepherd and pacifica to observe this action. it was a class of fourth graders. nine and 10 -year-olds. they were making robots out of a plastic cup and a battery and a wire. it was fantastic stuff. i was asking the kids, do you like this stuff? of course they said yes. i said to this one little boy, do you like this class and why do you like it? he looked at me like it was an absurd question and said, this is way better than school. i think that just talks about the success of the program and bringing science -- which many of us can find, brings it to life. that is where the archdiocesan appeal money goes. >> a nice example. and florence, on your initiative for stewardship, introducing the concept and introducing the practice, what is up with you and what can people do to learn more? >> actually, we have
5:56 am
workshops that are scheduled for the month of february. we would like to invite people to come. we have one in english -- because we have spanish and english. one in english called living a grateful and generous life. if they would like to know more about stewardship or no more about the workshop, they can call me. i will give them all of the information about the workshop. and more details will be available on the website too. >> i am wondering, if people were to get the list of stewardship parishes they were currently practicing, if they could visit and see what goes on at that parish and see if it is something that appeals to them. is that possible? >> sure. we are working on the website now. the list will be there. but saint augustine's in south san francisco, saint cecilia in
5:57 am
san francisco and holy name and star of the sea. >> just to finish up, rod, your website is rich with detail for people who want to know all about what development is and all about what giving is. and ways in which they can give. you have planned giving -- complete information as to how you can take part. in fact, iran the website and i know what is on it. if you come to the website and you are looking to find rod or florence and you are looking for development or stewardship, at the top, there is a button. the button says, giving. as we established today, the button should also say, receiving. because the rewards of that kind of giving are huge, as you are pointing out. >> thank you so much for being here and sharing with us. please visit the archdiocese website and find out all there is to know about development
