live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. all eyes are on wall street today after one of the worst point declines in history during a trading day. good afternoon, everyone, i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm kenny choi. it was a rocky ride as soon as the markets opened up this morning as we take a live look at the board. it opened up down more than 500 points earlier this morning. right now there's been a big rebound as the dow has bounced

back. it is up 325 points. so pretty good so far. we'll have a live report from the new york stock exchange in 20 minutes with cbs news' diane king hall. a powerful earthquake strikes off the east coast of taiwan. initial reports say it was a magnitude 6.4. there are reports of buildings toppled and extensive damage to roads and high-rises. emergency crews are working to free people trapped in a hotel that is partially collapsed. officials say at least two people have been killed, hundreds more have been injured. it is the waymo versus uber trial in san francisco. waymo saying uber possesses stolen trade secrets. >> reporter: good afternoon, kenny, that's right, waymo is alleging that uber basically stole driverless car technology and is using that technology

now. now, this is being closely watched by silicone valley, and i can tell you that the courtroom was packed, in fact, reporters had to go to an overflow room and watch the case on screens because it was so packed, so much interest, and one of the things people want to watch is the testimony from the embattled former ceo of uber, travis kalanick is expected to testify today, the second day of trial. waymo, which started out as a google driverless program and is owned by google parent company, alphabet is claiming a former star engineer took trade secrets to uber. waymo is claiming that engineer name, anthony levindowski downloaded files before he left the company and started his own self-driving company. uber bought that company. attorneys are arguing that the secret downloaded files never made it to uber's servers and don't serve as the basis of uber's self-driving car technology. today waymo called a series of

people to testify, including a google forensic analyst. that analyst says he basically tracked down those files to that engineer's laptop and that engineer put those files on a drive before turning his company laptop in. waymo will have to prove that the former engineer did indeed steal the technology that uber used that technology, and that the information was actually a trade secret and not something that an engineer could basically figure out on his own or that's something that was commonly known in the industry. that's what they basically have to prove as this trial moves forward. again, former uber ceo is expected to testify this afternoon before it wraps up today. but waymo is seeking up to $1.8 billion in damages. in san francisco, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5 news. state lawmakers are holding on hearing that would limit precipitations for opioids. the hearing is underway right now at the state capitol. california had more than 1900

opioid link overdose deaths in 2016. some counties had death rates as high as those in the hardest hit states in the country. lawmakers are working together to fight the crisis with a new approach. >> that approach includes coordination of efforts through the state wild multiagency working group. changes in policies of public payer health care system, a one time naloxone. the santa clara board will consider a resolution ordering a special election to determine whether persky should be removed from the bench. his decision to put brock

turner in jail. president trump decides this week whether to declassify the democratic response to a memo alleging fbi abusing surveillance powers in the russia investigation. weija jang has the latest from the white house. >> reporter: president trump has five days to decide whether to declassify the democratic response to a republican memo that criticizes the department of justice and the fbi's use of surveillance in the russia investigation. >> if he decides to keep the democratic memo under wraps, the american people are going to be forced to wonder, what is the president trying to hide. >> reporter: the house intelligence committee voted monday to release the democrat's ten page document, which addresses the republican memo point by point. rebutting accusations of political bias at the fbi when it requested warrants to spy on former trump campaign aide

carter page. in cincinnati, the president who has called the russia investigation a witch hunt appeared to relish the release of the republican memo. >> oh, but did we catch them in the act or what, you know what i'm talking about. oh, did we catch them in the act. they are very embarrassed. they never thought they were going to get caught. we caught them. >> reporter: the president recently said he is willing and even looking forward to being interviewed by special counsel robert mueller's team if his attorneys approve. lawyers are trying to narrow mueller's line of questioning in order to limit the legal traps, and relying on ground rules for getting evidence from the white house, one, a serious crime, two, proof that there's no other way to get answers and three, no fishing expeditions. weija jang, cbs news, the white house. the house intelligence committee was preparing to interview steve bannon today. the president's former chief strategist as part of their probe. that meeting has been put off. it's unclear if the house will

hold bannon in contempt. the alameda city council is expected to vote on whether to purchase more cameras that read license plates. the city had these cameras installed on four police cars. the car credits them to alerting them to a car thief, and helping officers locate a suicidal woman. alameda's police chief wants funding for 13 more cameras. some critics fear that federal immigration units could use those cameras to catch undocumented immigrants. san jose police giving an update on two homicide investigations, the city's fourth and fifth homicide of the year happened overnight. first, a man and a woman were found dead of gunshot wounds at denny's restaurant. it happened around 11:00 at south first street and east alma avenue. police are treating this as a domestic related murder suicide. and just a half mile away, a man was shot and killed near a car wash on keys and south 9th

street overnight. the area just encouraging people to come forward. free speech came with a multimillion dollar price tag for uc berkeley, the university revealing it spent $4 million on extra security over a 30 day period last year and that includes 2.8 million for the canceled free speech week. the university paid to bring in extra officers including from the chp, the cost included room, board and overtime. amid tensions with north korea, team usa is heading to pyeongchang including two bay area athletes bound for the 2018 winter games. anne makovec was at sfo for their departure. it's these athletes last few steps on u.s. soil before hitting their destination. the winter olympics in south korea. >> i'm feeling confident, i want to land my run. >> silver medalist, gus kenworthy is one of the members

ceremonies. good luck to them. the host city hopes the olympics bring a boost in tourism. the south korean olympic stadium cost $60 million. it will be used just four times before it's completely re- purposed and turned into a smaller venue along with an exhibition center and olympic museum. 12 venues were built costing $1.5 billion. >> when you have a party like the olympic games, everyone is celebrating, but after the party is over, somebody is going to clean up. and somebody is going to pay the money, so i think that will be taxpayers. >> some venues will have an olympic after life. the figure skating ring will become an indoor gym, the sky jump landing area doubles as a soccer field and the entire athlete's village has been sold off as condominiums. south korea spent a total of $10 billion on infrastructure, including the train and new

launch the world's most powerful rocket. this is an animation of the launch. falcon heavy can go used to send satellite, equipment and humans to the moon and beyond. elon musk says the mega rocket has the power to launch a 737 right into space. for this test launch, the payload will be his mid might cherry tesla roadster. behind the wheel is a dummy named star man, aiming as far as the orbit of mars. >> pretty cool. all right, a new report on wildfires in the state is calling for a shift toward forest management. the yearlong study by the little hoover commission concluded that crews are mismanaging fires by trying to suppress them instead of letting them burn naturally. it's recommending how to manage forests better including reducing the estimated 129 million dead trees in the state

and using controlled fires to maintain forest health. right now, federal and local government officials are holding a housing recovery workshop to help the victims of october's wildfires in sonoma county. topics include prefire housing shortage and preparing for long- term housing production. the workshop runs until 5:00 p.m. at the board of supervisors chambers on administrative drive in santa rosa and it's also being streamed on the county's web site. today is not record breaking but definitely warm out there now. >> warm and it's very dry. you guys are talking about fires and the conditions seem to be prime for that. we are seeing windy conditions, very low humidity levels and warm temperatures. here's a live look across our vaca camera across mount vaca. and across the north bay, it is very breezy, and here are your headlines, humidity levels down to 20 to 30%, actually, i'm noticing some humidity levels dropping to the teens, a gust between 40 and 60 miles per

hour in some spots. we will be warm, a little bit cooler than yesterday's afternoon highs. well above average, so let's take a look right now at some of those wind gusts, mount diablo, 63 miles per hour gusts. rose peak, 40. it's pretty breezy out there. sustained winds, you'll notice the direction here, the winds coming out of the northeast for san ramon and livermore, up to 12 miles per hour winds, so it's the east bay hills, the oakland hills are very breezy right now, sending all of that dry air right into the bay area, so that's why our temperatures are warm out there, and it's very dry. here's a look at future cast. we're going to continue to feel the breeze throughout the evening hours as well until about 7:00. napa staying with gusty conditions and late tonight it will all calm down. tomorrow we may continue to see a bit more offshore wind. not as strong as what we saw out there today. here's a look at the relative humidity levels. look at concord to 18% right now. 21% for livermore, a lot of the east bay, certainly dry, same

with the north bay, napa up to 18%. that is low humidity, there's still no critical fire alerts that have been issued but yes, it's still something to definitely keep in mind as the offshore winds continue, all because of this ridge of high pressure, and what this ridge is also doing is causing our temperatures to certainly be warm. so sunset tonight, 5:39. sunrise at 7:07:00 a.m., and here's a look at that 7-day forecast, in the 70s today, tomorrow, thursday, friday, and then this weekend, things will cool off into the 60s. >> not bad. >> keep it going. >> we like it. a girl scout found a fan base for cookies outside a pot dispensary, wait until you see how many boxes she sold in a matter of hours.

are cashing in on california's new pot laws. some are calling it bad parenting or genius marketing, but girl scouts across the state are cashing in on california's new pot laws. the cell phone video is showing a 9-year-old selling girl scout cookies out of a wagon near a marijuana dispensary in san diego. the girl's father wants his daughter to remain anonymous but he says that his daughter sold 312 boxes in two to three hour trips last wednesday and friday. an instagram post from the dispensary, even advertised that the girl will be outside. >> she has done all right, but i know that some of my friends

have sold 600 boxes on sunday, walking their neighborhoods. there are many ways that girls are being great entrepreneurs. >> the girl scouts allow sales generally in front of any business, even dispensaries, cookies went on sale last month and will be available until april. wall street is having another rocky day. stock markets around the world took a beating overnight following the sell off in the u.s. financial markets. cbs news' diane king hall is live at the new york stock exchange. hey, there. >> good afternoon, michelle, we're now heading into the final stretch of trading and here's where things stand. the dow is now up 413 points, so talk about a rally from this morning. it's really been all over the place today. the markets haven't really picked a clear path. it's still off in the final half hour of trading where traders make the decision. as one veteran trader puts it, stay alert and be nimble. it is good that we're seeing it bounce back and after

yesterday's historic fall, what has the overall mood been like today? >> well, it started out exuberant earlier today. i would say that a measure of calm was really the tone on the floor today. experts tell me that there's no reason to be alarmed, even though the common average person, you look at things like the wild swing yesterday, a wild swing today, and you would feel possibly even panicky, but the general rule of thumb down here has been don't panic, and we're talking about points here, not a percentage base, so yesterday was the largest single day point drop for the dow, it wasn't the largest percentage drop to put things in perspective and even that drop out of the gate today, looking at a rebound right now. >> no onemented to -- wanted to look at their 401(k)'s. >> yesterday it was like don't look. those in it for the long haul should stick to their plan, and

romaine, one of my favorite leaflets, it's -- lettuce, the dark purple, you see how beautiful it is. it has to feel nice and fresh to the touch. when you bring them home, i always do this when i talk about leaf lettuce, crisp them. put a little bit of water, put the leaflet lettuce, that way they stay nice and crisp for about two or three or four days. if you leave it in the plastic bag, it makes it wilty rather quickly, and that you don't want. so a caesar salad with red romaine, give it a try with a dressing. i'm tony tantillo, always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy.
