casino mogul steve wynn is out after multiple reports of assault complaints. and the falcon heavy roars into space and makes history. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in washington this morning there appears to be progress on avoiding another government shutdown. working against a thursday night deadline, the house passed a short-term budget deal last night, and senate leaders say that they are close to a long-term agreement, but neither deal addresses immigration reform, and president trump is not happy. hena doba is here in new york. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. there's plenty of optimism on capitol hill that a deal is close. over at the white house, though, the president says if immigration isn't properly dealt with, a shutdown might actually

be helpful. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle believe they can and will avoid another government shutdown before thursday's deadline for a budget. a deal could come as soon as today despite the curveball president trump threw at negotiations yesterday. >> if we don't change it, let's have a shutdown. we'll do a shutdown, and it's worth it for our country. i'd love to see a shutdown if we don't get this stuff taken care of. >> the president during a white house meeting on the violent ms-13 gang was calling for a more stringent immigration policy. lawmakers trying to avoid a second shutdown this year seemed to push past mr. trump's comments. >> he's the only guy that finds anything good in a shutdown, so that's not helpful. our goal is not to play mother may i with him. >> a government shutdown is never the answer. i don't believe we're in any danger of having another government shutdown. >> senate leaders from both

parti parties met yesterday and were optimistic that a deal could be imminent. both sides suggested they were close on terms that would raise spending limits on the military and domestic programs. >> i think we're on the way to getting an agreement and on the way to getting an agreement very soon. >> earlier in the day the house voted to pass a short-term government spending bill that would begin next month. and negotiations on the budget are also tied closely to negotiations on daca and immigration. senator john mccain and christopher kuntz are expected to introduce a bipartisan plan next week that would exchange funds for border security funding but not a wall. the white house on monday rejected that plan. anne-marie. >> hena doba in new york. thank you very much, hena. vice president mike pence said the u.s. is ready to get tough with north korea ahead of the olympics. pence is in japan.

he said the u.s. will roll out the toughest sanctions against north korea yet. pence went on to say the u.s. will continue to isolate north korea until it abandons its nuclear programs once and for all. mike pence will be leading the openi openi opening ceremonies. inspired by france's bastille day, trump wants to put on a lavish military parade of his own. the president said he wanted a military parade down pennsylvania avenue grander than the one he saw in paris. the pentagon says it's looking at options. the u.s. does not traditionally put on military displays of power. those are more common in authoritarian countries like china and north korea. las vegas casino mogul steve wynn is out. as chairman and ceo of wynn resorts. he resigned amid sexual allegations of misconduct. a number of women say he

harassed and assaulted them, something wynn denies. wynn said an avalanche of negative publicity has created a rush to judgment and that he cannot continue to be effective in his current role. a former u.s. olympics gymnastics coach faces a criminal investigation. last month john geddert was suspended by the u.s. athletics. the sheriff said there have been complaints against geddert but there have not been details provided. he worked with larry nassar who has been sentenced for molesting female gymnasts. at overseas a quake struck and four were killed. the magnitude 6.8 quake hit. at least four buildings including a hotel collapsed. roads buckled and power was knocked out. rescue crews are searching the

ruins for a missing 420 people. another 125 were injured. en> back in this country reinstated against the engineer of the ak tram train that jumped the tracks in philadelphia back in 2015. eight people were killed and 200 others were injured. the washington-to-new york train was going around the curve at nearly twice the speed limit. charges against brandon bostian have been dismissed twice. but a judge yesterday ruled evidence at a hearing was strong enough to warrant a trial. and no one was injured when one of amtrak's acela express trains came apart. two cars separated northeast of baltimore yesterday. kris van cleave has details. >> reporter: federal investigators are investigating why two cars on this acela amg track train separated north of

baltimore. sources say the d.c. to boston train was traveled at more than 124 miles an hour moments before the separation. amtrak said 52 passengers were on board. they were put on another train. there were no injuries. this picture shoes an area where passengers can cross between two cars. >> if someone were to have potentially been passing between two cars from one to the other, they could have fallen through that separation. >> i certainly would like to see a top-to-bottom examination. that may well have to include a safety standdown. everything comes to a stop, staff is focused an refocussed on safety processes and safety management systems. >> reporter: this incident comes days after a sill a very star train derailed outside of columbia, south carolina. last week a charter train carrying republican lawmakers hit a garbage truck, killing one and injured six.

"the new york times" reports on a fema contract that called for 30 million meals for hurricane maria victims in puerto rico. they delivered the contract to atlanta entrepreneur tiffany brown. she reportedly had no experience in large-scale disaster relief. three weeks later the contract was canceled. congress is investigating the contract and how fema handled the disaster. the "san francisco chronicle" reports a second man

in california has undergone breakthrough gene editing. there's also been no safety issues from the first man's treatment three months ago. in november a 44-year-old phoenix man became the first to have gene editing done inside the body for a metabolic disease. doctors say he's doing well. a second man underwent the procedure last month for the same disease. metro montreal reports canadian prime minister justin trudeau is facing backlash after he suggested a woman use "peoplekind. "the boston globe" reports on new england patriots offensive coordinator josh mcdaniels' shocking decision to stay with the team. just hours after the indianapolis colts announced they hired mcdaniels as the new head coach, mcdaniels backed out of the deal. the announcement had been scheduled for today. the move has led to speculation about how much longer bill belichick will remain the patriots' head coach. and "the philadelphia inquirer" says eagles quarterback carson wentz is now engaged. wednesday announced on social media yesterday he's getting married to his girlfriend maddie. he watched from the sidelines after suffering a knee injury during a game in december.

launches a fashion line for muslim women. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. they regained half their losses from monday's nosedive. gainers included tech companies, retailers, and banks. the dow rallied 567. the s&p 500 ended the day 46 points higher. the nasdaq jumped 148. this morning in l.a. the news is the newspaper. biotech billionaire patrick soon-shiong is reportedly near a deal to buys the "los angeles times." the deal is worth $530 million. he'll also buy "the san diego union tribune." the "times" has suffered through cutbacks and leadership changes. apple is considering offering refunds to customers who replaced their iphone
