possesses stolen trade secrets related to self-driving cars. jackie ward reports. >> reporter: a very confident travis kalanick was on the stand for a little more than two hours today and the prosecution team picked up right where they left off yesterday and continued to grill him today. we have video of when travis kalanick was coming into the courthouse earlier this morning for his second day of testimony. the prosecution started off today's proceedings by having kalanick confirm various documents in a thick binder "waymo's" team had begin him. in it were hundreds of pages containing uber meeting notes, emails and texts. one of the texts present was from a former "waymo" engineer, who they say downloaded 14,000 confidential documents in december 2015 shortly before uber hired him in 2016. kalanick describes him as a brother from another mother in

a text exchange between him and lewandowski. lewandowski says this is a race we need to win. second place is first loser. kalanick said, agreed. they were talking about the race in developing technology to get self-driving cars on the road. kalanick was also asked questions about his relationship with larry page, google's ceo. when asked how he thought page felt about uber branching into autonomy field, kalanick replayed with, quote, super not happy, and unpumped. of course, the case is still going on in the federal courthouse behind me and will continue throughout this afternoon. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. a big headache for people showing up to work and appointment at a dmv office in the east bay this morning. chopper 5 was over the oakland coliseum dmv office as water gushed outside the doors just before 7 a.m. fire crews say that the flooding may have been caused by a broken pipe in the ceiling. not advisingly, officials had to close the office for the -- not surprisingly, official had to close the office for the day. >> i had an appointment and was

turned away but i get to go to the other dmv in oakland. >> the dmv says it will honor appointments at nearby field offices including the one on claremont avenue in oakland, hayward and walnut creek. dangerous situation along a peninsula freeway had a lot of drivers doing a double-take. one of our producers snapped this photo this morning where you could say flames from this pick on 280 in palo alto near pagemill road. the driver escaped safely. if you have an older iphone, apple says it may offer refunds to customers who paid full price to replace their batteries. apple admitted using software to slow the performance of older models and then later offered battery replacements for $29 instead of $79. no word yet on when those rebates might be coming. real estate and casino mogul steve wynn is stepping down from chairman and chief

executive of his resort company. last month, the "wall street journal" published allegations of sexual misconduct against him by dozens of employees going back decades. wynn denied all of those accusations. he resigned as finance chair of the republican national committee a day after those allegations were made public. funds to fix the homeless crisis in san francisco are coming in by the millions. kpix 5's anne makovec is live in san francisco and says the money is being used to support navigation centers. anne. >> reporter: yeah. this is one of 'em here behind me which has been touted as a grand success. now the navigation center program is being expanded because of a partnership between the city and the state. >> i have been on the street since 1999. i just couldn't afford rent. it was too expensive. >> reporter: john is now a graduate of the navigation center here in san francisco's dogpatch. >> it's awesome. it's been incredible.

it's really helped me out. >> reporter: today the city is celebrating $10 million in state funding to support the system. >> people living in tents on our streets in dangerous conditions and in squalor are in the centers. >> reporter: one is at fifth and bryant, another at bayshore, between them another 250 beds. navigation centers have fewer restrictions than other shelters. people with partners, pets and possessions are welcome. guests are then connected to services to get them on their feet. as for john, he found out today he has qualified for temporary housing. what's next? >> i got to think about it. yeah. yeah. >> reporter: a whole new world. >> a job, i'm going to get a job, try to get a part-time job. >> reporter: the city says its next two centers will help an estimated 1,000 people each year. they are expected to open this summer. in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. at the state capital

there's a new push to try to prevent sexual harassment. a bill is looking to ban registered lobbyists who committed sexual harassment from similar work for up to four years. the author assemblyman mark levine says it expands beyond the legislature. the proposal would require an investigation into sexual harassment complaints made against anyone who is registered to lobby state officials. u.s. senate leaders announced they have reached an agreement on a two-year spending deal but there could be some major roadblocks. weijia jang reports. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and minority leader chuck schumer announced on the senate floor a 2-year, almost $400 billion budget deal. the bipartisan agreement contains big budget increases for defense and domestic programs such as combating the opioid epidemic and infrastructure projects.

>> the budget deal is a win for the american people. it will also do so much good for our military. >> reporter: the agreement is likely to be added to the short- term spending bill the house passed tuesday aimed at avoiding a government shutdown thursday night at midnight. >> i'm heartened that congress recognizes the sobering effect of budgetary uncertainty on america's military. >> reporter: the deal does not address immigration reform, which congress is tackling separately. the two sides agreed to work together after mcconnell promised democrats a vote on the daca program, protecting illegal immigrants known as "dreamers" who came to the u.s. as children. >> while i obviously cannot guarantee any outcome, let alone supermajority support, i can ensure the process is fair to all sides. >> reporter: but house minority leader nancy pelosi, who spoke for hours on the house floor wednesday about "dreamers," says she will not support a long-term deal without a similar commitment from republicans in her chamber. >> why can't we have some kind

dry out there. you will have to put extra lotion on. we'll have sunshine today and tomorrow. we have a ridge of high pressure still in effect and that's what's sending in those offshore winds and that's also causing that record heat out there. some broken records for wednesday: could be in the 70s and 80s in the area. it will be warm. sunset tonight at 5:40. sunrise tomorrow at 7:06. our daylight is getting longer and longer by the minute. here's the ski report: the snow base is still there.

of course, everyone is waiting for more sierra snow, more rainfall. the futurecast is showing our temperatures are going to be impact by this low that will dip down just to the east of us. so what that's going to do by this weekend into monday and not necessarily bring us a cancer of rain but it will cool us off ever so slightly. we have been so warm lately. you may notice this change from the 70s to the 60s by this weekend and then monday, tuesday next week temperatures will be staying in the 60s and plenty of sunshine. i love when the 60s become our cooldown. >> yeah. yeah. it's been nice out there. any big plans for this afternoon? >> i was going to go for a jog and then do some yoga but not that one that we were talking about. [ laughter ] >> the high yoga. >> not that one. >> neda, thank you. the new incentives one lawmaker wants the state to offer rideshare drivers to encourage companies to buy more electric cars. ♪[ music ]

ride-share drivers to buy environmentally friendly cars. a bay area lawmaker is introducing legislation that would create new incentives for rideshare drivers to buy environmentally friendly cars. the bill authored by state senator nancy skinner would use $300 million in state funding for rebates for uber and lyft drivers who decide to go electric. it also calls for the public utilities commission to set targets for converting ride hailing fleets. by 2020, 20% of the drivers

would need to drive zero emissions cars. 10 years from now, in 2028, that target would be 100%. privacy advocates expressing concern about plans to track all vehicles entering and exiting alameda with special cameras. but after a lengthy debate, the city approved funding for an additional 13 license plate readers that would record a vehicle's license plate number, the date, time and location. we are seeing a decline in solar jobs in california after years of growth. an annual survey released today found that the number of stole lar jobs in the state fell more than 13% last year. it blames issues ranging from regulatory changes to a wet winter slowing down sales and more changes are coming next year. the president decided last month to impose tariffs on imported solar panels which will probably raise costs for customers.

more than 86,000 solar jobs in the state, 34 of the nationwide total, are in the state. >> i'm taking this time because i think we have an opportunity now that is almost matchless. we are at a moment when we can all come together to do something really good for the country. take an action that has bipartisan support. we have no right as i said earlier, any of us, to associate ourselves with the aspirations of the "dreamers" unless we are able to, um, and willing and courageous enough to take action on their behalf. congress appears to be close to announcing a big two- year budget deal without a fix for "dreamers." so this speech by nancy pelosi, the house minority leader, is raising questions about whether leaders will be able to finalize that deal as planned. she has been speaking for hours. it's that time of year time to check into the "big brother" house and this time it's the

celebrity edition. earlier today i spoke with houseguest julie chen about what we can expect. >> a lot of hype going into this season because it is the celebrity edition. but when omarosa came into the picture, she stole the headlines. >> in the white house to the "big brother" house. and for whatever reason, we're living in a world where -- [ pause ] >> -- it makes sense. um, yeah. i'm calling it 2.5 weeks of crazy and that's not a reflection of necessarily of her. it's who has 11 celebrities locked up to compete for $250,000. i think the women are going to run this season of celebrity "big brother." i think between omarosa and brandy, those are the two to watch. >> the "big brother" celebrity edition premieres tonight at 8 p.m. it will air for three weeks with the finale on sunday, february 25th, right here on kpix 5. we'll be right back.
