braced for impact after a piece of the plane's engine cover ripped apart over the pacific ocean. and big tricks and big air gives snowboarder shaun white a big win at the winter olympics. good morning from the studio 257 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning six of seven climbers stranded on mt. hood are safely off the mountain, but sadly someone who fell 7,000 feet yesterday has died. it's more than 11,200 feet high, notorious for its treacherous conditions in warm weather, thousands climb it each year. one climber who's climbed it 20 times says he's never seen worse conditions. hena doba is here in new york with more. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. emergency crews responded to separate incidents at the hogback area.

the search started late morning and ended well into the evening. while one climber was airlifted to a hospital and died the others are safely off the mountain after a complicated rescue and falling rock and ice. a half dozen climbers stranded on oregon's mt. hood since yesterday afternoon have been rescued and brought to safety. a seventh, though, seen receiving cpr from fellow climbers died at the hospital. officials say he fell between 700 and 1,000 feet down the mountain. >> they changed the location where they're at. the patient is still not safe. they still have ice and rocks coming down on them. >> any time somebody loses a life, it's devastating. we are thankful, however, that we were able to get the other folks down safely. >> there were two groups stuck at an altitude of more than 10,000 feet. three wre able to get down with minimal assistance. two men were able to trek down

with the rescuers and others before nightfall was closing in. >> both of them are upset. they appear to be physically and mentally exhausted, chi think is a normal reaction to an event like today. >> a woman who couldn't walk or move when they found her had to be taken down by a rope and a sled 600 feet at a time. >> the ice conditions were really challenging, rock fall and hazard and what not. >> crews say warmer weather contributed to the snow and ice melt which led to falling debris and dangerous conditions. and mt. hood is no stranger to tragedy involving climbers, anne-marie. four people perished there just last year. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. professional golfer bill hoss is in serious condition. hoss was a passenger in a ferrari that crossed the median last night, hit another car, kept going, sideswiped an suv

and ended up slamming into a light poll. police say hoss is expected to survive. actor luke wilson was in the suv. he is fine. another driver was killed. this time the fbi contradicting the white house over when it knew of the alleged allegations of staff secretary rob porter. porter's position gave him access to sensitive secrets. he resigned a week ago. chip reid has more on the contradicting timelines. >> we administratively closed the file in january. >> reporter: on capitol hill fbi director christopher wray said the bureau's background check on rob porter had been completed last month. that appeared to contradict the white house claim that the investigation over abusing his former ex-wives was ongoing. >> the fbi portion was closed.

>> reporter: but press secretary sarah sanders insisted the white house investigation was still active. >> the white house personnel security office, who is the one that makes the recommendation for adjudication had not finished their process and had not made a decision to the white house. >> reporter: in an interview with the wall street journal chief of staff john kelly was asked if they should have handled the matter any differently. kelly said, no, it was all done right. despite that the white house remains on the defensive a week after the story broke. >> mr. trump, do you have a message to domestic violence victims? >> reporter: president trump did not answer that. >> i would like to hear an enunciation from the white house regarding domestic violence. >> i think he needs to send a stronger message, a stronger message. we need to allow women and men

who have been abused to come out and make sure their stories are heard and believed. >> reporter: the fbi did confirm today that it was in the hands of someone at the white house all the way back in november. the big question now is who. chip reid, cbs news, the white house. on capitol hill, u.s. intelligence heads warned of russian intervention in the upcoming elections. dan coats says the united states is under attack. coats told the senate intelligence committee that he's already seen evidence that russia is targeting november's elections. >> we need to inform the american public this is real, this is going to happen, and the resilience for us to stand up and say we're not going to allow some russian to tell us how to vote, how to run our country. i think there needs to be a national cry for that. >> the intelligence chief says

russia will try to interfere by using social media to spread propaganda and misleading reports as it does in 2016. president trump has cast doubt that russia meddled in the 2016 election that got him elected. a high-ranking police officer was shot and killed as he confronted a suspect downtown. commander paul bauer was killed. he was attending an unrelated event when he received a radio call. he chased the suspect who was running from other officers, got into a struggle and was shot several times. police arrested the suspect and recovered a weapon. overseas prime minister benjamin netanyahu has no plans to step down despite a police recommendation that he be indicted on corruption charges. in a televised speech last night, netanyahu vowed to fight. he calls the charges a witch hunt. following a year-long

investigation, police say netanyahu received nearly $300,000 in gifts in cases that involved bribes, fraud, and political favors. the attorney general will decide whether to actually charge the prime minister. a frightening incident over the pacific. a united airlines jet made an a successful emergency landing in honolulu after the covering off one of its engines flew off. the flight was en route from san francisco to hawaii yesterday. about 40 minutes before it was due to land, the engine covering came off. passengers said they heard a loud bang and the twin engine boeing 777 started shaking. they landed without incident and the passengers got off at the gate. now to the olympic games in south korea where the flying tomato soared to another gold medal. 31-year-old red-headed snowboarder shaun white was in second place going into his final run, but a daring and dazzling exhibition that included difficult back-to-back spins catapulted him to first place in the halfpipe.

he's the first american male to win a gold medal in three different winter olympic. his gold wit was the 100th loim gold for the u.s. and fourth gold medal for the u.s. in these game, tying it with the netherlands and one behind germany. meanwhile some alpine skiing events at olympics have been put on hold because weather refuses to cooperate. dana jacobson is in pyongyang with the details. dana, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. you can see the wind flipping behind me in those flags there. it got so bad at olympic park today they had to evacuate some of the media tents and they asked spectators to stay inside the venues. athletes weren't spared. as you mentioned, alpine skiing had to be postponed for the third time in four days. ferocious winds are causing problems for athletes during the first week of the winter games.

gusts up to 45 miles per hour have disrupted or postponed numerous events including the women's slalom, which has now been pushed back twice. british snowboarder amy fuller had a tough time during her slope style runs this week. >> as i was in the air, this gust just took me and swept me from under my feet and i'm happy to be in one piece. i had a pretty heavy slam on the last run. >> reporter: fuller said she feared for her safety. others expressed their same concerns. not a single snowboarder completed error-free runs. >> no athlete is forced to go down and compete. that's the first thing i want to make clear. >> reporter:al pine skiing began after two days of opponents. downhill skiers started lower down the course to avoid some of the fiercest winds. >> we're 1,100 meters or 3,800 feet. the area is under a siberian

after three years of drought, cape town, south africa, could become the first major city that runs out of water. the day that happens is called day zero and it's now expected to take place on june 4. it was originally expected to happen in april. residents are being limited to 13 gallons of water a day. well, the case of the anonymous powerball winner goes to court, and the new details of a porn star controversy. trump's long-time lawyer michael cohen says he paid porn actress stormy daniels out of his own pocket. daniels claims she had an affair with mr. trump before he became president. cohen arranged the payment in 2016. he declined to say why he made the payment. cohen said he wasn't reimbursed by the trump organization or the trump campaign.

the "washington post" reports the oxfam prostitution scandal has widened to at least three countries. offam workers are accused of prof prostitute survivors after the earthquake in haiti and relief efforts in chad. people say jay asher the author of the best book "13 reasons why" denies accusations of harassment. the novel about a suicide teenager became a hit series on netflix. they say he was expelled from the organization because of harassment complaints. asher says he left voluntarily. and the new hampshire union leader reports that lawyers for a woman who won a $560 million jackpot argued in court that she should be allowed to remain anonymous.

on the "cbs moneywatch," a new boss at chipotle and a follow-up to the classic card game uno. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning and happy valentine's day, anne-marie. well, here on wall street investors are awaiting today's news on inflation. january's consumer price report is due out later this morning. there are some fears that higher inflation would force interest rates and slow economy. the dow added 39 points. the s&p 500 ended nearly 7 points higher. the nasdaq gained 31 points. chipotle has a new ceo. the chief executive at taco bell will start at chipotle next month. they've been trying to win back customers since 2015. nicol says he wants to change chipotle's menu and online presence. and mattel is introducing a new card game dubbed dos. it's the company's latest effort to update its classic brands.

our top stories this morning, a mountain climber who fell 1,000 feed off mt. hood yesterday has died. six others had to be rescued. climbers described dangerous conditions including melting ice, which led to falling debris. and fbi director christopher wray said his agency completed their background investigation of rob porter last month. that appears to contradict a white house version. the trump administration says it first learned about domestic abuse allegations of parter last week just before porter resigned. each year about 40,000 children are born with heart defects. some need surgeries and other procedures for the rest of their lives.

kenneth craig tells us about a group that gets together every valentine's day for a special celebration. >> reporter: 2-year-old riley ortiz doesn't miss a beat when the music is on. she and her mother are here celebrating. riley's beating heart has required a lot of extra love. >> it was difficult. day and night in the hospital. >> reporter: riley was born with a rare and serious congenital heart defect. doctors performed open heart surgery when she was just 4 months old. >> i didn't know if my daughter was going to be well. i didn't know what the future was going to hold for her. >> reporter: she's one of thousands of children whose hearts have been mended by the hospital. each valentine's day the hospital along with volunteers from project sunshine treat them to a party. >> not to see a doctor or get prodded or poke order examined, but just to have fun.
