cruz fired a hail of bullets into a classroom at the marjory stoneman douglas high school. >> he went up and down the hallway shooting through the classrooms. he shot through my door. i think three people in nigh classroom got hurt. there was blood everywhere. >> reporter: cruz was said to have had an ar-15 semiautomatic rifle. >> he got us out, a large group of unprotected targets. >> reporter: cruz was picked up off campus without incident. last night the police searched the home where the 19-year-old was staying. the family said cruz was not related to them. they took him in three months ago after his adopted mother passed away. his adopted father also died. >> maybe he was a little

depressed because of his mother. they're shocked. there were problems aet the school earlier, some fighting, but nobody saw this coming. >> reporter: law enforcement confirms cruz had been expelled from the high school for, quote, disciplinary republicans. one said she spoke to cruz as she was evacuating schools. >> he was trouble in middle school. i joked and said, i'm surprised you did it. he just looked at me and said, huh. they sent out a message saying the student had shown signs on social media he owned a gun and was skpiktding vie lend tendencies. they're reminding parents if you ever see something, say something. laura podesta.

>> we're going to talk a little bit more about that. thank you very much, laura. the shooting suspect nikolas cruz is being described as a vie lend troubled teenager. police say he posed some disturbing material on social media. cruz is described as crazy about guns and kind of an outcast. he was banned from entered the campus while carrying a backpack and admin strarts had sent an e-mail to teachers warning them about cruz. this type of attack is becoming more common. don dahler has more. >> reporter: january 23rd, a young gunman opens fire inside a small crowded school atrium in kentucky killing two students and wound 14g others. >> i saw a lot of blood

everywhere. >> reporter: december 7th at an aztec school, another student kills his classmates. november 14th, a gunman in california fired 30 rounds into an elementary school as children hide beneath their deaths. none of the children dead but afterward they discovered he murdered five people including his wife. >> we loaded her dead body concealed under the floor of the residence. we believe that's what started this whole event. >> reporter: what starts these events is always the work of detective work, community gathering, and familial agonizing. this year there have already been 18 school shootings. there were seven last year. the number of school shootings has steadily risen except for 2016 when there was only aid.

it falls short of other administration demands. senate leaders are trying to schedule a vote on that plan and three others today. president trump explicitly denounced domestic violence. the president had defended former aide rob porter who was accused by two ex-wives of domestic abuse. yesterday a week after the allegations against porter became public, the president spoke out. >> i am totally opposed to domestic violence of any kind. even knows that, and it almost wouldn't even have to be said. >> meanwhile chief of staff john kelly is coming under increasing criticism over how the porter incident was handled. when asked if kelly's job was safe t president did not answer. the president also signed into law legislation aimed at protecting young adults against sexual abuse. it follows the gymnastics sex abuse scandal involving larry

nassar. they're required to report any sex abuse within 24 hours and the statute of limitations won't begin until they realize they were abused. the young girl who was taken has been found and the man has been charged with kidnapping. the girl was found in blaemt yesterday in the car with the man suspected of taking her. the mayor of charleston announced the news last night during a prayer vigil. >> we give god the glory and our thanks that all of our prayers have been answered and, in fact, heidi todd is safe in the hands of the fbi. >> reporter: the suspect thomas evans fled when the police approached. he was arrested in mississippi. so far there's no connection between evans and the girl's family. coming up on the "morning % news" now, shooting update.

. our top story this morning, florida officials are trying to figure out why a former student opened fire at a high school, killing at least 17 people. 14 others were wounded. police say 19-year-old nikolas cruz was armed with a semiautomatic weapon and carried a large amount of ammunition. laura podesta is in parkland, florida. laura. >> reporter: anne-marie, i'm right outside stoneman douglas high school. you can see behind me it's a very active crime scene. police have crime tape all around the school and road. what they're trying to do today is identify all 17 shooting victims. they have identified 12 so far. they're going to be investigating the motive. they're interviewing the suspect. the suspect is in custody right now, nikolas cruz. so they're going to be asking

him why did he do this. they'll also be reviewing social media. we know that cruz posted on instagram, and there's one photo that shows him holding a gun with profanities as the caption. so they'll be looking into that trail on social media and then, of course, questioning him why exactly did he do this. just to bring you back to yesterday, it was right when school was being let out that cruz is suspected of pulling the fire alarm and then students left the building and that is when the gunfire rang out. again, 17 people we know were shot and killed. here are some of the students' reactions. >> so the dude pulled the fire drill. we went outside. boom, boom, boom, boom. we heard gunshots. i thought it was firecrackers. after i heard the last shot, i thought, oh, hell, no. i ran back to my classroom. i told my teacher, i think that's a shooting and we should
