good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. florida legislators expect to consider tougher gun-control laws that could include raising the age to buy any gun to 21. 19-year-old nikolas cruz legally bought the gun police say he used to kill 17 people at his former high school. students at marjory stoneman douglas are urging lawmakers to take action. meanwhile, the family that took had cruz is defending their decision to allow him to move in with about half a dozen guns. hena doba is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that family that was housing cruz say they brought the teen in was because it was the right thing to do, his mother having just died. meanwhile, 100 marjorie stoneman douglas high school students are bussing hundreds of miles to florida's capitol to

urge lawmakers at an event tomorrow to put an end to a repeat of the massacre that killed 17 students and faculty. as accused high school shooter 19 -year-old nikolas cruz appeared in front of a judge yesterday for a second time, the family that had been housing him was speaking out. james and kimberly sneed insist cruz showed no warning signs that he was about to do harm to himself or others. >> he had a positive, positive path going. he was going to school. he had a job. he told us two weeks ago the happiest he's ever been. >> reporter: the family says when cruz moved into their home with around half a dozen guns, their only stipulation that he keep them locked in a gun safe. >> i had guns. i respect guns. as long as they're handled properly, which is the right to own a gun. >> reporter: cruz owned the guns legally. a florida judge yesterday authorized the release of his records that indicate he had multiple mental health concerns including severe depression and

adhd. at vigils and protests across the country, many are calling for tighter regulations to prevent those with mental health issues from buying a gun. >> it comes down to children in classrooms who are being shot. >> reporter: at this line outside the white house, dozens of high schoolers from teens for gun reform posed as corpses. students from parkland plan to rally at the state capitol this week. >> we feel like the politicians on both sides, but mostly the gop who are accepting money from the nra, are betting on our lives.e being against us. >> reporter: the white house says president trump will host a listening session tomorrow with both students and teachers. and cruz faces 17 counts of premeditated murder. his lawyers say he will plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to pursue the death penalty. >> hena doba here in new york. some city leaders in dallas

want the national rifle association to move its annual meeting somewhere else. the nra plans to hold its yearly event at the dallas convention center in may. there are leadership meetings, gun exhibits, and sales. council member dwayne carraway called the event inappropriate after last week's school shooting. in a statement, the nra said, "dallas, like every other american city and community, is populated by nra members. no politician anywhere can tell the nra not to come to their city. we are already there." in the wake of the florida school shooting, the white house says president trump supports stronger background checks for gun purchases. the president talked to senator john cornyn about a measure that he introduced that would enhance state and federal records sharing with the fbi. the measure has bipartisan support. its fate remains unclear. mitt romney thanked president trump for his support in the utah race.

he's running to replace retiring senator orrin hatch. romney and mr. trump have not always seen eye to eye. in 2016, the president said romney choked like a dog when he ran against president obama. romney called president trump a phony who was unfit for office. in his tweeted endorsement, the president said "romney will make a great senator and worthy successor to orrin hatch, and has my full support and endorsement." we are learning more about russian interference in the u.s. election. according to an indictment released friday, the effort has been traced back to a so-called troll factory in st. petersburg. elizabeth palmer spoke with a former insider. >> reporter: today on this street, there was a "for rent" sign in the window. the building says the u.s. indictment was a busy troll factory set up to influence u.s. voters. the russian foreign minister denied the kremlin was involved. "where is the evidence," he asked. but russian internet activist

lud mila savchuk saw it with her own eyes. in 2015 she went undercover and got a job at the troll factory writing fake news in russian. this shaky video is the only glimpse she has now of the operation, but she says "we knew there were people working in english. they were better paid, and their work was absolutely secret." it consisted of posts ridiculing hillary clinton and fanning the flames of divisive issues in the u.s. when ludmilla saw the english posts, she recognized them right away as the work of the trolls. "they use the same techniques that we did," she told us. the troll factory's boss was yevgeny prigozhin. known as putin's chef, he originally made his money in high-end restaurants. that's him serving george w. bush at a state dinner. the u.s. indictment doesn't make a direct link between the troll factory and the kremlin.

but prigozhin, the ultimate insider, has made millions from russian government contracts. there is no doubt, ludmilla says, that the factory worked for the kremlin. here in russia it's to take on that kind of power. are you afraid for yourself? "to stay safe," she tells me, "i can't answer that question." the best information says that the russian troll operation has been scaled down for now. u.s. intelligence is warning there may be a fresh assault on the midterms this fall. teizabeth palmer, cbs news, st. now to the weather, and a large storm system that threatens the middle of the country with heavy rain that may lead to flooding. the rain will come in several waves throughout the weekend. flood watches and warnings are posted from east texas to vermont. some towns along the ohio river

it's probably the same young male cougar looking for food or shelter. major league baseball is looking at minor time cuts, and bots exploit the florida school shooting. those are some of the headlines on "the morning newsstand." the "new york times" reports an hour after the shooting internet watch dogs saw a spike in posts about gun control on twitter accounts suspected of having links to russia. the hash tags included #parklandshooting and #guncontrolnow. the bots focus on anything divisive for americans that widen the divide. they say the disinformation can include conspiracy videos on youtube and fake interest groups on facebook. "the pittsburgh post-gazette" reports the pennsylvania supreme court imposed a new state congressional district map. it is expected to increase competition between democratic and republican candidates. the court struck down the old republican-drawn map last month calling it unconstitutional. the new map gives a potential

boost to democrats in this year's house elections. republicans say they'll challenge the map in federal court. michigan's mlive.com reports the state utility company consumers energy says it will eliminate coal-produced electricity by 2040. the company's president and ceo says the utility plans to generate 40% of its power from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy by then. xi also said climate change is a real issue. and "the san diego union tribune" reports major league baseball announced its latest attempt to shorten games. visits to the pitchers mound by the manager, a coach, or other players will be limited to six in a nine-inning game if there's no pitching change. teams get one additional visit every extra inning, commercial breaks between innings will also be cut by 20 seconds. the average time of a nine-inning game last year, three hours and five minutes. still ahead, deep-fried

charms. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. wall street opens for business again after yesterday's holiday hoping to continue last week's recovery. for the week, the dow rallied 1,025 points or 4.5%, recovering more than half the territory it lost earlier in the month. the s&p 500 finished 112 points higher. the nasdaq added 364 points on a weekly basis. billionaire investor warren buffett releases his annual letter to berkshire hathaway shareholders on saturday. his letter is widely anticipated because of his remarkable success. the oracle of omaha explains complicated issues in simple terms as he reviews berkshire's performance and may discuss other topics. berkshire owns more than 90 different companies and a variety of businesses including utilities, retail, and insurance. general motors says it will builds its cadillac xt-4 crossover suv at its plant in kansas city, kansas. gm says that means the fairfax

assembly plant will keep about 500 jobs. the plant currently makes the chevy malibu but lost a third shift last fall when malibu sales slumped. gm is spending $265 million to prepare for the xt-4. it's difficult to run a chicken restaurant without chicken. that's what happened to most of the 900 kfc restaurants in the united kingdom and ireland. they were forced to close because of a problem with its new delivery partner dhl. kfc apologized. dhl blamed operational issues. it's unclear when the stores will reopen. and news for all you breakfast cereal fans. for the first time in ten years, general mills is adding a marshmallow to lucky charms. the magical unicorn marshmallow is replacing the hourglass. it features hues of bright purples and blues. it is the first-ever marshmallow to be inspired and created by kids. >> i don't know why the hourglass was a lucky clamor to begin with. >> i know. >> it shows that time is

figure skating and are now the most-decorated figure skaters in olympic history with five medals overall. american siblings maya and alex shibutani took home the bronze medal. in the medal count, norway leads with 11 golds and 28 overall. germany has won ten golds. canada has taken home eight gold medals, the netherlands six, and the u.s. five. while athletes battle for olympic gold, there's another battle taking place in south korea. it's inspired by their neighbors to the north. dana jacobson is in pyeongchang. dana, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. south korea may not be known for its beer worldwide, but thanks to a nudge from an unexpected place, that could sooning changing. in fact, it's already changing around here. north korea's first craft beer can't be found among the imports in the south. brew pubs like magpie and seoul might not exist without it. >> if it wasn't for it, i guess the korean beer being compared

our top story this morning, president trump endorsed mitt romney's senate run in utah. he tweeted romney would make a great senator. romney thanked mr. trump. the two have had their differences. the president said romney choked like a dog when he ran against president trump. mitt romney called trump a phony, unfit for office. and high school gunman nikolas cruz appeared in court yesterday. he's accused of 17 counts of premeditated murder. his lawyers say he'll plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to pursue the death penalty. shooting survivors are heading to the state capitol. tomorrow they'll hold a rally to try and urge lawmakers to enact tougher gun laws.

anger and outrage are being expressed nearly 3,000 miles from the school shooting in parkland, florida. parents turned out yesterday in los angeles for a large protest against gun violence. jamie yuccas was there. what do we want? >> gun sense! >> when do we want it? >> now! >> reporter: the message from mothers rang loud and clear. hundreds protesting in downtown los angeles, many personally touched by gun violence including debra nelson. what happened to your daughter? >> i can't talk about that. >> reporter: her daughter, monique, was killed as she shielded her 2-year-old son from gang members firing assault weapons. >> let's stop pussyfooting around and playing political games. we need to get all these guns off the street. >> reporter: the rally was organized by grassroots organizations calling for universal background checks. many also want assault weapons banned. >> it's a human rights issue that we can't seem to wrap our

heads around which seems insane. >> reporter: it's one of many protests around the country that sprang up after 17 students were gunned down at marjory stoneman douglas high school. cassandra shank says her 14-year-old daughter goes through active shooter drills four times a year. a move her school implemented after sandy hook, the massacre of 20 first graders and 6 staff members that sparked similar outrage but no change in federal gun laws. if it didn't happen with sandy hook, why is it going to happen now? >> i don't have an excuse for that. should be ashamed. >> reporter: shanks believes the latest shooting is different since the loudest voices are from students, the ones most affected. >> think they're going to let us get less mad. they're going to force us to stay mad. >> reporter: the kids are? >> the kids are. i think that mean the images have to stay fresh in our minds. it means we have to stay in this really unpleasant place, so be it. >> reporter: and you think there needs to be change in terms of gun laws? >> 100%. i believe this has to be a breaking point. >> reporter: this time, they say, laws will change because
