miller. captioning funded by cbs it's thursday, march 8th, 2018. this is the "cbs morning news." treacherous travel. a nor'easter dropped heavy wet snow, leaving drivers stranded on one new jersey highway and making it challenging for cars in massachusetts. and crews are working around the clock to restore power to hundreds of thousands of customers. president trump's plan to slap tariffs on is on imported aluminum and steal is set to begin this week but two countries may be exempt for now.

and will he or won't he. pressure is on florida's governor to sign a gun deal to arm some teachers and restrict gun sales after parkland, florida's gun massacre. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. people on the east coast are scrambling to recover this morning from the second powerful winter storm in less than a week. at least one death is blamed on the storm. some areas are buried in more than 2 feet of heavy wet snow. more than 800,000 customers are without power. amtrak has canceled service until later this morning between new york and boston. philadelphia and new york city were spared the worst. hena doba is here in new york. good morning, hena. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this nor'easter dropped 20 inches of snow in some areas already reeling from last week's storm. there are more downed trees, and

like you mentioned, hundreds of thousands of people are without power, and travel has been nothing short of a nightmare. around 500 drivers were stuck on route 280 in new jersey during the evening commute. snowmobiles had to be brought in to shuttle people to safety. a scene in worcester, massachusetts, not much different. cars seemed to be going every which way but forward. >> i'm trying to leave work and get up the hill, but i can't. >> reporter: in new york city many buses weren't working, nor were trains thanks to canceled service. >> they canceled the buses. i'm here at the terminal and now i'm shocked. trains are canceled too. i don't know how to go home. >> reporter: the situation wasn't much better at airports. more than 2,600 flights were canceled. for many places like here in new new york city, as you can tell, it was the heavy and wet snow that led to even more downed trees and power lines.

more than 800,000 homes and businesses have been left without power. they say it will be on tomorrow night, but there's a ton of trees down in that area, so i don't know. >> reporter: forecasters say there's a potential for another storm early next week. that one if it makes landfall will hit further south around the washington, d.c., area. that one person killed in the storm was an 88-year-old woman. a tree fell on her house. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. eric fisher, chief meteorologist of our boston station wbz, says for some new england residents, there is more snow to come. >> well, some of those huge snowfall totals, incredible in new jersey. big power outage situation out there. we're watching the rest of the storm system as we head into thursday, curling up into maine and new hampshire. many areas of new hampshire still seeing some significant

snowfall and rough travel. there could be additional power outages on top of the issues we've all right seen. this storm has tugged down quite a bit of cold air across the east. highs barely getting to 60 in atlanta today. just around 50 in panama. pretty chilly for spring break. 37 in cincinnati and 30s across much of the upper ohio valley and heading across the great great lakes states on thursday. still chilly on friday. we're still watching this next potential storm system. this is sunday into monday of next week. this, too, could be one that climbed up across the eastern seaboard bringing snowfall anywhere from the d.c. area into new england. it's not set in stone yet, but it's continuing to be an active patterned a a pretty chilly paper for most of the country as well. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. well, the white house says president trump will finalize his plans on imposing tariffs on aluminum and steel this week.

there appears to be a change in the policy now. some countries may be exempt, and mr. trump is facing more pushback on his tariff plan from members of the republican party. nancy cordes explains. >> congressional republicans are making a last-ditch attempt to change the president's mind expression deep concern about the prospect of broad global tariffs on aluminum and steel, warning that the move will make u.s. businesses less competitive and u.s. consumers porer. republican leaders from the speaker on down have been warning the president for days that the kind of across h board-tariff that he's been talking about could sfark a trade war. in fact, on wednesday the eu may respond with retaliation on the u.s. products including cranberries to peanut butter to orange juice. they want at the very least to tailor these tariffs. it appears that the white house is listening.

it said on wednesday for the first time that u.s. allies like canada and mexico might be exempt. nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. ahead, only on "cbs this morning," we'll discuss the president's tariff plan with one of its biggest republican critics, nebraska senator ben sasse. president trump has won a restraining order against an adult film actress. it bars her from speaking out about their alleged affair. stormy daniels filed a suit on tuesday alleging a nondisclosure agreement she signed just before the election wasn't valid because he didn't sign it. she claims she began an intimate relationship with mr. trump in 2006. mr. trump denies the allegations. and now to the escalating feud between president trump and the state of california. the justice department is suing the state over its sanctuary laws protecting illegal immigrants. attorney general jeff sessions told law enforcement officials in sacramento yesterday the state laws are unconstitutional.

sessions also went after oakland's mayor about warning about unannounced raids by federal officers. >> here's my message to mayor schaaf. how dare you. how dare you needless le endanger the lives of our border officers. >> mayor libby schaaf later said he separated terrorized families. authorities in birmingham, alabama, say a fatal high school shooting appears to have been an accident, but many unanswered questions remain. there were at least two gunshots yesterday afternoon around dismissal time at hoffman high school. police say the person who fired the gun was not an outsider, but they did not identify the shooter or say what may have been the circumstances. police did recover the weapon though. one 17-year-old boy was wounded. a 17-year-old female was killed.

>> the 17-year-old who 30 days from now would be 18, a graduating senior, had been accepted into college already, who had aspirations and dreams to be a nurse. >> police are looking at surveillance video and interviewing students for clues. florida governor rick scott is considering whether to sign a school safety bill passed by legislators. now, scott has repeatedly said he does not support arming teachers. the suspect who opened fire at a florida high school last month, nicholas cruz, was formally charged with 17 counts of murder yesterday. his attorney said he would plead guilty to avoid the death penalty. british police say a former russian double agent and his daughter were attacked with

students from florida's marjory stoneman douglas high school performed at carnegie hall in new york city tuesday. the performance came nearly three weeks after the shooting massacre at the school. the students were one of six high school bands to play at the historic iconic venue. it was scheduled before the shooting took place. and miami heat guard dwyane wade made a surprise visit to marjory stoneman douglas high school. the cafeteria erupted in cheers yesterday when wade walked in. one of those stunts killed, joaquin oliver, 17 years old, was a huge fan of lebron james and wore his jersey. wade told them he was inspired by all of them. an anonymous winner of the powerball makes donations to charities, and a mistake leads to the death of an officer. "the kansas city star" reports 911 led police officers to the wrong home. the mistake led to one of the

officers being shot and killed. the authorities say the cops were sent to the wrong address in clinton, missouri, 20 miles from where the 911 call actually came from. three officers entered the house tuesday night and a man inside starting shooting. one officer died, two others were wounded. the shooter also died, but it's not known if he shot himself or if he was killed by police. "the san diego union tribune" reports workers capped a ruptured gas line hours after it shut down a freeway. a construction worker accidentally drilled into a pipeline in mission valley, california, yesterday. thousands of homes and nearby businesses were evacuated. about nine hours later workers capped the gas line, the evacuation order was lifted, and the freeway was reopened. thousands of cheerleaders from 39 states and nine countries were possibly exposed to mumps at a dallas cheerleading competition. health officials say someone

from another state who had the mumps traveled to dallas for the competition last month. the texas health department sent a letter to those who participated to let them know they may have been exposed to the virus. the new hampshire union leader reports lawyers picked up a ceremonial check from an anonymous woman who won nearly $500 million from a january powerball jackpot. the woman's lawyer says she plans to give as much as $50 million to charities. the first charities were announced yesterday, one that helps disadvantaged girls and one to end childhood hunger. a judge is still deciding whether to reveal the woman's name. and "time" reports on a new story that might reveal amelia earhart's new resting place. she tried to fly around the world in 1937.

started and the nasdaq gained 24 points. a possible slump in what has been a strong housing market, spring home sales could be the weakest in years according to t"the wall street journal." higher prices, changes in tactic, and rising interest rates are to blame. that means more first-time home buyers are being priced out of the market. the national home retailers services says it tracks signed contracts, not close and sell is at its lowest point in four years. amazon is offering discounted membership fees to its prime service for people on medicaid. it's $7 cheaper than what it had been charging. amazon says it's amazon's latest move to woo low income shoppers from walmart. since june aman has offered discounted prices to certain types of people on public assistance. it includes two-day prime shipping and their streaming news and services.

after finishing practice in philadelphia, their bus got stuck in the snow. the players joined together to push the bus out. the team takes on delaware this afternoon in the colonial athletic association tournament in philly. and two nfl players who are also brothers are being hailed as lifesavers for helping a colorado man. 72-year-old dan smoker sr. was hiking with his grandson eli when he fell more than 20 feet on a trail last weekend. >> i went down first, and i was climbing down. then i heard what sounded like a shoe slipping and i turned around to see my grandpa falling, and i saw him hit the ground. >> nfl players christian and max mccaffrey happened to be nearby and joined other hikers in helping smoker. christian called 911. smoker suffered severe injuries and is still in intensive care. christian who plays for the

michelle miller went to the steel company to get reaction to the tariff plan. >> reporter: wheatland, pennsylvania, is one of the homes to the largest steel pipe makers in new york america. they have more than a dozen plants like this in the u.s. >> in this facility, there are 250 people -- >> reporter: ceo barry zekelman plans to add hundreds of johns in wheatland alone and pick up production if president trump's tariff on steel becomes a reality. >> steel is the backbone and we could be the backbone again. we could employ a hundred more people and be proud to walk through these plant that are sitting idle right now. >> reporter: he's so fired up about the president's trade plan, he's pledged to give $1,000 to each of his 2,000 employees every year that the tariff stands. >> i believe it means job security. >> reporter: that's a welcome surprise for karen yanak, who's a machine operator. >> i truly believe we're going to get a lot of the domestic business back.
