the outrage from activists the today's bart board meeting. >> the trump administration is criticizing local leaders and the state's sanctuary law. the message to the attorney general and the president. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. president trump plans to visit california next week for the first time since he took office. and while he is here, he is expected to discuss his administration's lawsuit to overturn sanctuary policies in california. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec joins us now with more on the feds versus california. >> reporter: attorney general jeff sessions announced that lawsuit in sacramento yesterday. governor jerry brown calls it an act of war! today, president trump again threatened to pull funding from sanctuary jurisdictions. >> you want the money? you can't have the sanctuary cities. that way we avoid the court battles all the time. >> reporter: the big one right now, a 45-page lawsuit filed by the department of justice against the state of california. it takes aim at three laws. one requires private employers to give notice before

cooperating with i.c.e. another prevents police from tipping off immigration agents. the third stops i.c.e. from keeping detainees in local jails. >> federal law is the supreme law of the land. >> reporter: and just as the attorney general did yesterday, president trump today lashed out at oakland's mayor libby schaaf. >> what the mayor of oakland did the other day was a disgrace. >> reporter: he is referring to schaaf's informing the public about recent immigration raids and he says letting 800 illegal immigrants get away. >> it's certainly something that we're looking at with respect to her individually. what she did is incredible and very dangerous. >> reporter: schaaf has hired a lawyer and continues to fight back. >> how dare you villify members of our community by trying to frighten the american public into thinking that all undocumented residents are dangerous criminals? >> reporter: senator dianne feinstein tweeted this morning:

>> reporter: the governor vows to fight every step of the way. >> it's vicious read rick of an administration that wants -- rhetoric of an administration that wants to divide america and hold on to power by obliterating other people. it's tragic, profoundly un- american and we'll fight it in every way we can conceive in california. >> reporter: withholding federal funds has been ruled unconstitutional. san francisco and santa clara counties already sued about this issue and won their original case as well as an appeal. alarming new findings about the impact of rising seas and sinking land in the bay area. scientists now say it's happening faster than first thought. research done at uc-berkeley found areas like treasure island, foster city and the san francisco airport could be at the greatest risk. the study found the sinking in these areas is happening more quickly and combined with

rising sea levels it could nearly double the area of land mass that will be under water by the year 2100. to start the day, we had a little bit of rain but it's cloudy out there. >> we have a few clouds out there but also we'll get a break and see that sunshine as well so a little mix of everything and there are some areas with very, very light drizzle. taking a look at hi-def doppler definitely noticing it's cleared up. you may see darker clouds in the mountain range but no measurable precipitation. but we did have a decent amount overnight. to the north the rain is coming down. there's a chance some of this will come to our area but not until late, late tonight or early tomorrow morning. as far as 24-hour rain totals go, mill valley saw a good amount, almost three-quarters inch. healdsburg three-quarters three-tenths. oakland and richmond got a

.25" of rain. right now, temperatures feeling not bad. 66 in livermore. 61 oakland. concord 63. check your flight. they were delayed earlier because of the low cloud ceiling, made it difficult for some of the planes to take off but we are going to talk about our next chance of showers. we have another chance for some subtropical moisture next week. anger and emotions ran high in oakland as the family of the man shot and killed by a bart police officer demands justice. jessica flores reports. >> reporter: the bart police chief says nothing changed. that officer who shot and killed shaleem tindle is still on active duty. meanwhile, family and friends and supporters of tindle inside the bart board room are demanding that that officer be fired. the bart board message is clear. they don't have the authority to fire a bart police officer. but today at the bart board meeting, another message as well of sympathy for the

family of shaleem tindle. here's bart director lateef simmons. >> any mother who lost her child by the hands of the state deserves an opportunity to express her first amendment right. >> reporter: one after one called for joseph mateu to be fired and charged for killing tindle. >> and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law! >> reporter: the shooting happened outside the west oakland bart station last month. in the body cam video from officer mateu, the officer runs towards sounds of gunshots before shooting tindle in the back. [ yelling ] >> let me see your hands! let me see your hands! [ gunfire ] >> reporter: authorities circled what's believed to be a gun in tindle's hands before officer mateu shot him. tindle's family says tindle was just defending himself by trying to wrestle the gun out of the other man's hands. >> we're tired of this police brutality and them getting away with it getting off the

hook. scot-free. >> no justice! >> reporter: tindle supporters marching out of the building vowing to return to every meeting until they get what they demand. in oakland, jessica flores, kpix 5. >> the bart police chief says the officer's use of force was justified and the officer will remain on duty while the d.a. and oakland police investigate the shooting. to florida now, a new gun law is heading to the governor's desk after last month's deadly high school shooting in parkland. the bill would limit firearms sales to people 21 or older after a three-day waiting period. it allocates $400 million for school mental health programs and allow some staff to be armed. >> we have met with many students and parents and including the parents of the 17 that were killed. all of them have signed a letter urging everyone to support this legislation. >> only educators who don't exclusively teach can be armed. for example, a teacher who also coaches can be armed under this bill. that's only in the counties that allow it. now, in the wake of the

florida school shooting the president is holding a summit on videogame violence. president trump has blamed videogames for the tragedy in parkland that left 17 people dead last month. the meeting will include two software gaming executives and the head of an industry trade group. the rest are republicans including marco rubio and critics of the games. president trump is expected to sign an order today imposing stiff new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. at the same time signaling he might spare some allies. the president as plan would place a 25% tariff on imported steel and 10% on aluminum. the proposal is expected to exempt canada and mexico as long as they agree to a new nafta deal. the administration says it will keep american steel plants competitive. critics disagree. >> if the president goes through with this, it will kill american jobs! >> the president is very

focused on making sure american companies are treated fairly. >> 107 republican house members sent a letter to mr. trump expressing their concern that the new tariffs will spark a trade war. today is international women's day and as kpix 5's jackie ward reports, students at shepherd middle school in san jose organized an event to honor some of their her her rows. >> reporter: they are celebrating women. >> what are we? mexican resort city. the u-s embassy says it has received information about a "security threat" in the beach town of playa del carmen. and now u-s government employees are around alert is out for a city in mexico. it's in playa del carmen and now u.s. government employees are not allowed to go there. all this comes after an explosion at a ferry injured 26 people last month. the resort is near mexico's most popular tourist destinations like cancun, cozumel and others. so far no specific details on the threat have been released.

don't know, totally clear, totally honest, totally open about it? so that's a big issue! >> the company's privacy policy says it only tracks your information once a theater is selected. the company has released an ios update on the app that will remove unused location capability. in the northeast, clean-up is under way this afternoon after a second big storm in less than a week dumped heavy snow in the region. emergency crews are using snowmobiles to shuttle people to safety as wet snow toppled trees and power lines causing several fires, as well. right now hundreds of thousands of people will still without electricity. and one of the hardest-hit areas, connecticut. more than 100,000 people are still without power. >> there are people without power. we understand that that's not optimal. we working with the utility in the recovery efforts. >> two feet of snow fell in parts of new jersey, new york, connecticut, massachusetts and vermont. >> and we complain about the

rain. we got some overnight rain and it's beautiful conditions. so i want to show you this. this is interesting. so taking a view of the bay bridge right now, it's clear there. but check out the golden gate bridge. cloud cover and winds, the flag stronger out there. so we are seeing those winds pick up just a little bit. north wind at mountain view now at 10 miles an hour. sfo 12-mile-per-hour winds. and hayward around 8 same with fremont. oakland, starting to pick up a little west-northwest wind at 12. temperatures feeling all right in the low to mid-60s for a lot of us. 66 in police officers. 63 in concord. san jose you're already up to 68 degrees. expect temperatures to rise by a few more degrees this afternoon. we still have those lingers clouds in some areas. but a lot of it is breaking up. we may see a little drizzle here and there for this afternoon. but it's not going to be too much. it's not going to cause any kind of measurable rainfall.

so that's not necessarily in our forecast. we got that overnight while most people were sleeping and early tomorrow morning we may see some very slim chances of scattered showers. high temperatures in the 60s. sunset at 6:10. sunset 6:29. here's what we can expect. a lot of that precipitation is over across washington-oregon so that's why we didn't see much of it. we just got the bottom end of the storm. friday through sunday some subtropical moisture is going to impact california. and that's mainly going to hit southern california. we may start to see a little bit more rain from that saturday night into sunday. here's a view over at tahoe. so we saw some snow flurries come down. didn't bring much measurable snowfall for them. nothing to add to the snowpack. but really now, they are left with beautiful clear skies. it is definitely clearing up there. north star has a nice base: now to sunday if they get

anything it won't be much measurable snowfall just a few flurries. there's a wind advisory in lake tahoe until 4 p.m. today. next week, heavy rainfall, low elevation snow, gusty winds expected to arrive monday night, tuesday, wednesday of next week. that's when we are going to get that series of storms to come on through. but monday is dry. that's a look at your forecast. we'll be right back.

the view will astound you. but thanks to this week's jefferson award winner.. it's what "isn't" there that if you hike the skyline trail in the hills the view will astounds you but thanks to 24 week's jefferson award winner it's what isn't there that adds to the beauty of the east bay open space. allen martin reports. >> here's our silver loop right here. >> reporter: glen scheider has never been afraid to get his hands dirty. the nurturing began years ago on this section of skyline trail. >> when my oldest daughter was 11, we got an idea, let's see if we can hike in one day from our house in berkeley to grandma and grandpa's house over in martinez. >> reporter: they did it. it took 14.5 hours. but they did it all on public land. at the same time, glen was shocked by what surrounded them. >> the trail on both sides was thistles up to your knees. >> reporter: so he started

clearing little bits of the trail himself. 25 years later he has a skyline gardens group of volunteers to bring back native plants. >> you also bring back the mix of butterflies, bees, birds, small animals and everything. >> reporter: you can see from the views why protecting this area is so important to glen. he says that on a clear day, you can see to the sierra. east bay m.u.d. which owns the land as part of its watershed is one agency helping fund the group. cynthia attkisson is now a volunteer after retiring from the water company. >> his charisma and love has imparted to each of us. >> reporter: for glen, it's as much about educating volunteers or even a passing hiker as it is about trail restoration. >> what we're really doing is training people to restore and heal the land. let's go over a little

i am extremely proud of jackie, gaby and stephanie. we worked with pg&e to save energy because we wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights!

day is going to be is cantaloupes. for now the season is making in imported cantaloupes with great flavors and dropping prices. selection and storage is very, very important. when you buy them, don't compromise, netting nice and tight all the way around. very important. heavy for their size. also, very important. now, you see sometimes imported cantaloupe are green. but that's okay. not bad at all. just not too much green. when you bring them home, store them in the refrigerator. take them out a couple of hours for room temperature to enjoy them but don't store them on the counter because they will ripen up too fast and when you cut them in half, look at that is that beautiful? and loaded with flavor. a super food. can't beat it. good for you. not bad.
