and dramatic recordings from last month's florida school shooting. students and parents call 911 during this taurfyi pterrifying. >> okay. don't move. just stay hidden. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump has agreed to become the first american president to meet with the leader of north korea. north korea's kim jong-un says he's willing to discuss dismantling north korea's nuclear program and wants to meet the president as soon as possible. the news following months of harsh rhetoric, insults, and sanctions imposed by the united states. the united states and north korea are technically in a state of war. it reportedly ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. hena doba is here with more. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. they'll make sure if the summit

does take place, it's a meaningful meeting with a good outcome, but there's also somewhat skeptical because if you remember, he said his nuclear program was close to irreversible. it was south korea that brought the news and invitation from north korean leader kim jong-un to the white house. >> he's eager to meet president trump as soon as possible. >> president trump accepted. the offer was extended as a south korean delegation briefed u.s. officials about a recent sit-down with kim jong-un. >> in our meeting, north korean leader kim jong-un said he's committed to denuclearization. he pledged that north korea will refrain from any further nuclear missile test. >> south korea says the face-to-face will take place before the end of may. the white house insists time and

president trump's plan to place import tariffs on steel and aluminum damaged the global trading system. the president ordered the new tariffs yesterday to take effect in 14 days. mr. trump said mexico and canada would be exempt while a new nafta agreement is being negotiated. he said the tariffs are necessary because aggressive foreign trade practices are an assault on the united states. economy. >> a strong steel and aluminum industry are vital to our national security. absolutely vital. steel is steel. if you don't have steel, you don't have a country. >> the president suggested countries other than canada and mexico may be exempt. mr. trump is going through with the tariffs despite warnings they could spark a trade war. last night san antonio firefighters rescued a high school student who had been trapped in a cave for more than ten hours. when she was pulled out, she was conscious, in good spirits, and apparently not injured. she was on a field trip to the

robber baron cave located on the north side of the city. she got stuck in a narrow opening 350 feet inside the cave and about 70 rescuers working in 20-minute shifts were able to free her by chipping away at the rock. federal agents have opened a criminal investigation of the beating of black man jaywalking by an asheville, north carolina, officer. the video was captured off of the body cam of the officer. but the case didn't become public until last week. at a community meeting outraged residents wanted to know what took so long. >> we're no longer in the '60s. we're in the 2000s, 2018, and it's time to cut it out. we don't need to hear any more talk. >> hickman was relieved of his duties the day after incident.

he's been charged with assault and was taken into custody last night. just released 911 calls are painting a clearer picture minutes immediately after a gunman opened fire at a florida high school, killing 17 people. the calls came in just over a minute after the attacks started. police entered the building 11 minutes and 15 seconds after the first shot was fired. adriana diaz reports. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> reporter: the first cries of help from inside had to be whispered. >> someone is doing what? hello? hello? >> reporter: the caller, afraid of making too much noise. >> marjory stoneman douglas is being shot up. >> it's being shot up? are you at the school? i can't hear you. are you at the school? >> reporter: the caller hung up.

as students tried to stay quiet inside. first responders struggled to get specifics. one dispatcher relayed information from a mother on the phone with her daughter inside. >> okay. where is her daughter hiding at? what room is she in? >> the 1200 building. >> i understand she's in the 1200 building. does she know what room she's in where she's hiding at? >> does she have a class -- the girl doesn't want to talk. she's silent. she's too afraid. >> reporter: according to a timeline released from the broward sheriff's office, first call came within a minute of the first shots being fired. all but one came from outside the building. one was from a panicked mother who could be overheard speaking directly to her child. >> i love you. i love you. hide in there. can you play dead? if he shoots, you need to play dead. if he shoots, play dead.

>> reporter: the school officer, the only armed officperson on c never went inside the building during the shooting. we heard from his lawyer about a week and a half ago. he said that's because he thought the shots were coming from outside. now, the new timeline reveals within two minutes of the first shots being fired, he radioed police, possible shots fired 1200 building, revealing that he knew the shots were possibly coming from inside the building, yet he remained outside. adriana diaz, cbs news, tallahassee. british police now say 21 people had to be treated following an apparent nerve agent attack on a russian agent and his daughter. sergei skripal and his daughter remain in critical condition. they were found unconscious on a bench last sunday. the officer who tried to help them remains hospitalized in serious condition. 21 others needed blood tests, support, and advice. british officials promised strong action against whoever is responsible. and this morning some

800,000 customers in the northeast remain without power following the second of two strong nor'easters to hit the region. at least one death is blamed on the storm, which is winding down this morning. some areas are trying to recover from 2 feet of snow that began falling wednesday that knocked down trees and power lines. some residents have been without power since the first storm and say the time line for repairs keeps changing. >> at first it was sunday night after that friday and then it was tuesday and then wednesday. now i think it's something like friday. we're told it might be pushing to the weekend. >> adding to their problem, forecasters are tracking another late-season storm that could run up the coast early next week. well, coming up on the "morning news," new on netflix, the former president is in talks to produce a series for the streaming company. and arson mystery.

surveillance video captures an arsonist lighting an suv on fire in stockton, california. he pours liquid on the vehicle parked in a driveway of a home on saturday. he ignites it and then runs to a waiting car. it's not the first time the man's car has been vandalized. police are searching for the suspect. the forgotten victims of a nor'easter and a former president may have a netflix deal. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports barack obama is in talks to provide shows for netflix. the former president and his wife michelle are reportedly negotiating a deal to produce programs exclusively for the streaming service. people familiar with the service

say he doesn't intend to use the show to respond to president trump or conservative critics. he's talking about shows highlighting inspirational stories. "the boston globe" reports on seniors being left in the cold and dark in the town of norton, massachusetts. two powerful storms downed trees and power lines leaving many elderly and disabled residents without electricity since last weekend. about 170,000 people are still without power in the state. officials say it could be several days before all the power is restored. "newsweek" reports on an investigation that says the deadly collision involving the "uss john s. mccain" was caused by a collision. a singapore investigation says it happened because of a sudden turn by the u.s. warship which caused it to head into the path of the tanker. the "san francisco chronicle" reports a woman settled a lawsuit for her arrest in 2014 after police denied her a translator.

our top story this morning. president trump says he'll meet with north korean leader kim jong-un. kim offered the invitation through a south korean diplomat. kim says he's willing to discuss dismantling north korea's nuclear program. this would be the first meeting between an american president and a north korean leader. the time and place of the proposed meeting has yet to be determined. president trump talked about gun violence yesterday with members of the video game industry which generated a record $37 billion last year. anna werner looked at whether there's a link between virtual violence and the real thing. >> reporter: the white house put out these video game scenes.

last month president trump said this. >> and this is what kids are watching, and i think you maybe have to take a look at it. >> reporter: he met parents like melissa henson. >> the kinds of messages and images they're putting in their minds, they're seeing nightly dress rehearsals for huge acts of violence. >> reporter: but this psychologist says -- >> they're using it as a scapegoat for what might be the real cause of the violence. >> reporter: 80% of mass shooters did not show an interest in vie lend video games. >> it seems like something that should actually make us safer. so it's a total understandable reaction. the problem is just the science, the data does not back up that it would actually have an effect. >> reporter: but other critics point to this, the appearance of weapons in video games like this remington assault rifle in call of duty.
