12:15 pm
the situation has been going on for close to two hours. this is video from earlier. you can see the police tape up around the area. we did talk to a person who was driving into yountville earlier this morning and was turned away by law enforcement. they said at that point a lot of fire officials came to the scene. we're looking air resources lot of law enforcement, the fire officials, the fire trucks out there on the scene. we just talked to somebody who works at the golf course on the campus. and that person just told us that they were told to "shelter in place" at some point, that they haven't heard anything but that building is building g on campus at the veterans center. now we are taking a live look out at the scene here. you can see a lot of media has showed up at this point.
12:16 pm
and, um, a lot of law enforcement right there probably stopping people from driving to that area. they are being told -- they are telling people do not attempt to go in that area because they are shutting people down. you can see some trucks actually leaving. we are trying to confirm more in the information. at least 1,000 veterans live there. this is a big facility for the veterans. they can get rehabilitation. they can get care and it's also a place to congregate with other veterans. >> so at this point, not much information from authorities, from chp besides the fact that there are at least 2 hostages there right now. we are of course updating -- waiting for an update from the authorities at the scene. we have many reporters there a photographer trying to get the latest information.
12:17 pm
this started at 10:20 a.m. at the veterans home in yountville. it's an active shooter situation. >> here's some new information that i'm getting from the napa valley register. the newspaper reports that the suspect is a member of the pathway home program for military vets with emotional, um, emotional issues. um, but we -- that's what the napa valley register is reporting right now. so of course we have not confirmed that. this person has taken hostages. sorry. this is a fluid situation so information is changing as we go. >> earlier in the morning, napa valley unified issued a lockdown but since then, that
12:18 pm
lockdown has been lifted. but certainly a concerning situation for many residents in that area. that veterans home in yountville houses more than 1,000 people there. right now we only have two hostages in this situation. as we take a look at the video you can see that large police presence. they have been there since after 10207 when the first calls came in. we're waiting a press conference by authorities and we'll bring you that as soon as we get it. no idea right now as to when that will happen. but we are certainly waiting for more information because not much information at this point whether there were 15 to 30 shots fired. we are trying to confirm some of that information. so a lot of information coming in and we'll bring that to you on air and online. we just learned that atf from san francisco is actually respond and just getting to the scene. again, a little more information about the center. we just talk to jason bolt who works at the golf course on
12:19 pm
the campus. it's a very big facility. and it's also kind of the focal point for the community. it's a small community. yountville is small. everybody kind of knows everybody and people come in and out of this center. there is a facility center for the veterans. there's also that golf course. there's also a theater, bowling lanes, pool. a lot of people go in and out of this campus. this is a live look at yountville near the veterans home in napa county where there is still an active shooter situation and hostage situation. at least two hostages still according to authorities. we have confirmed that. and we are certainly waiting for some more information. you can see the police presence there. they have taped off certain areas so access to that area
12:20 pm
12:21 pm
which is on campus again. this is a big campus. dozens of law enforcement are out there working this. we just got word a couple of minutes ago that the atf from san francisco is actually on the scene now. we want to go live out to marco one of our photojournalists to get a sense of what's going on out there. i know we're looking at some of the law enforcement there. what have you seen so far? i have been here for 10, 15 minutes. i see a strong chp presence. a lot of media and chp presence as you can see from my live pictures now. >> marco, do you have any sense of how far you are from the building where the hostages might be in?
12:22 pm
12:23 pm
>> has any official chp or other agency talked to media members about when they might stage a press conference? give us updates? >> reporter: for myself, no. haven't been able to contact chp. it's fluid. a lot of chp officers around the area directing people to come in or out. so i'm not sure about that. but we'll try to find out and bring it to you as soon as we get the information. >> are they going into the campus or are they heading out ? >> looks like they want to come in. you see chp stopping. actually they are getting redirected. i see this honda accord making a u-turn so they are trying to enter the campus but they are being redirected by chp. so no access at the moment.
12:24 pm
>> marco, thank you. we have some new information coming into the newsroom. the atf from san francisco on the scene. security and residents at the veterans home told to "shelter in place." there are more than 1,000 people who live on the campus. helicopters also being asked to back away. we just heard the sound of helicopters in that live shot. they are asking them to back away because law enforcement is having trouble hearing on the ground. >> that could be a big issue especially if they are trying to be in communication with this man who is holding at least two hostages. we know in building g. that's understandable so they can continue to communicate with him and try and get this situation under control. we haven't heard of any reports of any casualties and we are taking another live look at the scene here where marco is setting up at one of the perimeters. it looks like some cars are
12:25 pm
trying to get into the facility and being turned away. the big media presence there, as well. a lot of fire officials, atf from san francisco on the scene right now. security and residents are told to "shelter in place." we talked to somebody who works at the golf course a quarter mile away from the building g saying they are not on lockdown at this point. >> so the veterans home this is in yountville in napa county about 55 miles north of san francisco. napa valley unified issued a lockdown earlier in the morning. they have lifted that lockdown order. we have a developing situation in yountville. a hostage situation at least two hostages confirmed. and there is still an active shooter situation. and we are working to get some more information including whether there were multiple shots fired at deputies this
12:26 pm
morning. the call came in at around 10:20 this morning. and we are also hearing reports too but we have not confirmed that yet that the person in question the suspect is armed and also possibly wearing body armor. we did see just some video from a short time ago with s.w.a.t. team members with their guns out and ready and -- and looking again at this video. the california department of veterans affairs said, law enforcement is at the yountville veterans home right now following reports of gunfire. the safety of our residents, workers and the community is our top rioter. we have activated our emergency response protocol and are cooperating with law enforcement and law
12:27 pm
enforcement will provide further official information when confirmed. >> of course this is a concerning situation for so many of the people who live in that community that houses the veterans home in yountville, houses more than 1,000 people there. right now as far as hostages are concerned, two confirmed at this point. we are still waiting for a news conference. that should be held by authorities there at the scene. this is a live look at the scene right now. you can see that checkpoint right there in the middle of your screen. we have a reporter on the scene as well trying to get more information. a fluid situation right now. so not much information at this point besides the fact that there's an active shooter situation still going on right now on that campus and that there are two hostages. >> not much new information. so we just want to keep giving you these updates as we get them. we might be repeating some information to you but it's
12:28 pm
important to get that information out especially if you know anybody in that area or if you are heading to that area or know anyone who is, um, everyone should stay away from that area so law enforcement can do their jobs. we have seen some people being turned away trying to go to that facility. this is an aerial map of the veterans home of california. and just looking at this point, you can see that it is a very, very big campus. the building in question on the campus is building g. that's what somebody called in when we heard that 911 call from earlier. and that's where it's believed the hostages are being held. >> we have some new information coming in. a statement from the napa valley museum in yountville releasing this statement saying, due to an emergency situation at the veterans home, the museum is closed for today. the museum staff are safe. our thoughts and prayers are with neighbors at this difficult time and our thanks
