after a night of drinking. they're not being swindled out of cash. they're shopping under the influence. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, all fight passengers were killed when a sightseeing helicopter crashed in new york city's east river. the pilot was the only one to escape. the passengers never had a chance. the helicopter hit the water, overturned, and quickly sank. hena doba is here in new york with the latest. hena, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. witnesses say they say the propellers stop midair before the helicopter just dropped. investigators are trying to figure out just what went wrong. this is cell phone video showing the moment a helicopter being used for a photo shoot crashed into new york city's east river. police say two people were pronounced dead at the scene. three others were taken to the

hospital in critical condition. later died. the sixth person, the pilot, is the sole survivor. rescuers say he managed to free himself and was picked up by a tugboat. >> someone was on top of the helicopter waving his arms and screaming for help. >> reporter: you can hear the pilot on the distress call saying "mayday." a few seconds later he used the words "engine failure." >> i saw the propellers stop, but it looked almost like it was supposed to land, like it was making an emergency water landing, but within literally a minute it was completely submerged. >> reporter: firefighters say the chopper went down in nearly 50 feet of water and frigid temperatures contributed to a very challenging rescue. >> one of the most difficult parts of operation, we're told, the five people besides the pilot were all tightly

harnessed. the harnesses had to be cut and removed in order to get these folks off of the helicopter which was upside down at the time and completely submerged. >> reporter: the ntsb has yet to determine what exactly caused the crash. the helicopter was owned by liberty. it has been involved in two other crash since 2007. the recent in 2009 killed nine people. we also just learned that the pilot has been treated and released from the hospital. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. well, no date has been set, but trump administration officials say they expect the first ever meeting between the president of the united states and the leader of north korea to take place. kim jong-un's promise not to resume testing of weapons or missiles, the administration says no other conditions will be imposed on the north prior to the meeting.

the plan does not call for an increase to the minimum age to buy assault weapons or for comprehensive background checks, things the president has seen to endorse. education secretary betsy devos will head a commission to provide recommendations to the president. mr. trump is calling for court orders that allow guns to be removed from individuals deemed to be a threat to themselves or others. an improving criminal background check system, and for congress to pass the stop school violence act, a violence prevention school program. they want firearms training for school personnel, the expansion of mental health programs, and a review of the fbi tip line. a north carolina man is due in court today for an arrest. he was taken into custody late friday. 61-year-old michael hand was taken into custody on friday. he's being held without bond. tracy gilpin, then 15 years old was missing in october 1986. her body was found on october opz

22nd in plymouth, massachusetts. an autopsy determined she had been killed by a massive skull fracture. she was the sister of a state police officer. and this morning a winter storm watch is posted from virginia to maine. gusting winds, flooding, and snow are forecast. new england is expected to be hit the hardest. some areas there have yet to recover from the first storm. >> it's been traumatic, it really has. i was hoping it was going to go south of us. what's frustrating is the wind. the wind reminds you. the waves can come back around. i lived here for 18 years, never had a problem until the last storm and now you feel a little bit of unease every time you hear another one come. >> the storm is expected to ramp up tonight into tomorrow morning. other areas including boston could see another 8 inches of snow.
