after a night of drinking. they're not being swindled out of cash. they're shopping under the influence. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, all fight passengers were killed when a sightseeing helicopter crashed in new york city's east river. the pilot was the only one to escape. the passengers never had a chance. the helicopter hit the water, overturned, and quickly sank. hena doba is here in new york with the latest. hena, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. witnesses say they say the propellers stop midair before the helicopter just dropped. investigators are trying to figure out just what went wrong. this is cell phone video showing the moment a helicopter being used for a photo shoot crashed into new york city's east river. police say two people were pronounced dead at the scene. three others were taken to the

hospital in critical condition. later died. the sixth person, the pilot, is the sole survivor. rescuers say he managed to free himself and was picked up by a tugboat. >> someone was on top of the helicopter waving his arms and screaming for help. >> reporter: you can hear the pilot on the distress call saying "mayday." a few seconds later he used the words "engine failure." >> i saw the propellers stop, but it looked almost like it was supposed to land, like it was making an emergency water landing, but within literally a minute it was completely submerged. >> reporter: firefighters say the chopper went down in nearly 50 feet of water and frigid temperatures contributed to a very challenging rescue. >> one of the most difficult parts of operation, we're told, the five people besides the pilot were all tightly

harnessed. the harnesses had to be cut and removed in order to get these folks off of the helicopter which was upside down at the time and completely submerged. >> reporter: the ntsb has yet to determine what exactly caused the crash. the helicopter was owned by liberty. it has been involved in two other crash since 2007. the recent in 2009 killed nine people. we also just learned that the pilot has been treated and released from the hospital. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. well, no date has been set, but trump administration officials say they expect the first ever meeting between the president of the united states and the leader of north korea to take place. kim jong-un's promise not to resume testing of weapons or missiles, the administration says no other conditions will be imposed on the north prior to the meeting.

pompeo has gotten progress, but has agreed to verifiable denuclearization soon. >> where the regime sits today with their capacity to reach the united states. >> there's no one in the administration who has face-to-face experience talking to north koreans. >> reporter: joe witt is a state department veteran who has negotiated with the north. >> what is your biggest advice? >> meet to people who have face-to-face experience talking to the north koreans. don't rely on people who are just reading briefing papers. >> reporter: beyond north korean talks, newly announced tariffs, and legal questions surrounding president trump's involvement with a porch star, they're rallying and the campaign slogan would be updated to keep america great! errol barnett, cbs news, the white house. well, a gun control plan released by the white house late yesterday is being penned by gun control advocates.

the plan does not call for an increase to the minimum age to buy assault weapons or for comprehensive background checks, things the president has seen to endorse. education secretary betsy devos will head a commission to provide recommendations to the president. mr. trump is calling for court orders that allow guns to be removed from individuals deemed to be a threat to themselves or others. an improving criminal background check system, and for congress to pass the stop school violence act, a violence prevention school program. they want firearms training for school personnel, the expansion of mental health programs, and a review of the fbi tip line. a north carolina man is due in court today for an arrest. he was taken into custody late friday. 61-year-old michael hand was taken into custody on friday. he's being held without bond. tracy gilpin, then 15 years old was missing in october 1986. her body was found on october opz

22nd in plymouth, massachusetts. an autopsy determined she had been killed by a massive skull fracture. she was the sister of a state police officer. and this morning a winter storm watch is posted from virginia to maine. gusting winds, flooding, and snow are forecast. new england is expected to be hit the hardest. some areas there have yet to recover from the first storm. >> it's been traumatic, it really has. i was hoping it was going to go south of us. what's frustrating is the wind. the wind reminds you. the waves can come back around. i lived here for 18 years, never had a problem until the last storm and now you feel a little bit of unease every time you hear another one come. >> the storm is expected to ramp up tonight into tomorrow morning. other areas including boston could see another 8 inches of snow.

"time" reports russian president vladimir putin is being criticized for insinuating jews and other minority groups could be behind the russian interference. in an interview putin says he doesn't care about alleged russian interference because the actions weren't connected to his government. he also said those responsible may be jews or ukrainians with russian citizenship. the antidefamation league said putin is giving new life to anti-semitic stereotypes. the "los angeles times" reports a man who killed three americans said he returned from afghanistan traumatized. after a standoff with police, albert wong and three hostages

were found dead friday in the napa valley facility. his former guardian said he knew his time in afghanistan had affected him. she said ptsd affected his ability to adjust to everyday life. california's "mercury news" says a freezer malfunction at a san francisco fertility clinic may have damaged thousands of frozen eggs and embryos. the clinic acknowledged yesterday some 400 patients had been told about the liquid nitrogen failure on march 4th. it comes days after they said a refrigerator malfunction may have damaged more than 2,000 frozen eggs and embryos. and more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, stocks are indicating a higher open this morning following a solid week due in part to friday's stronger than expected jobs report. the february report is expected to keep the federal reserve on track to gradually increase interest rates and suggests officials don't have to worry that the economy is overheating. take a look at the numbers. the dow finished 795 points on the week. the s&p 500 gained 95 points and the nasdaq added nearly 301 points next week. elon musk says the company plans to launch an unmanned mission to mars early next year. at a south by southwest auction, musk said the human landings could happen by 2024. he said the boosters on spacex

are reusable holding down the costs. meanwhile a startup electric scooter sharing service in los angeles raised $100 million to fund its expansion. bird rides was launched just six months ago and plans to expand to 50 new markets this year. it's an app-based rental that makes it available for customers to pick up and drop off. they have an electric motor that can go up to 15 miles an hour. customers are charged by the minute. and "black panther" continues to dominate at the box office. "black panther" took in an estimated $41 million over the weekend and is now the seventh highest grossing domestic release ever with $562 million in ticket sales.
