are taking a stand. >> reporter: hundreds of students walked out of their classrooms today. they joined some middle school students even elementary school students who protested for stricter gun laws and against gun violence. walking out and raising their collective voice. students gave speeches, rapid. >> say it with me, come on, don't shoot. >> and honored victims of gun violence in 17 minutes of silence. >> may they rest in peace. >> the movement for stricter gun laws in the wake of the parkland mass shooting isn't only a moment of demonstrations. students registered to vote and wrote letters to congress. >> we want background checks to be improved. we want bump stocks to be banned which were used in parkland, florida. we want concrete changes. >> here it's generally safer from where i live but it's also really scary knowing people have access to guns. people my age who go to my school can get access to a gun.

>> while some school districts in other states threatened to punish students who walk out oakland unified school districts encouraged students to walk out. >> what do you say to those who say get back in the classroom and leave the politics to the adults. >> i would say the adults doing politics right now aren't doing their job. we're going to be able to vote in the next election so politics is our responsibility and we are a part of it. >> these students not just learning about history. today focussed on making it. >> students all over the bay area walked out of class to demand action on gun control. this was the scene where a large group of students marched to the city's police department. . >> tell the adults who don't know what it's like to go to school every single day and be

that scared. we want change. >> the school district had originally said anyone who walked out would receive an unexcused absence but reversed that decision after backlash from students. >> a number of schools in san jose also participated in the movement. students and teachers at notre dame high school walked out of class in solidarity with those impacted by gun violence nationwide. it was a similar scene at schools in the east bay this morning. student ins lafayette surrounded 17 of their classmates representing the 17 lives lost in parkland, florida. >> students from not only the bay area but across the country walked out this morning. and jacky ward has a nationwide round up for us. >> reporter: thousands of students and teachers walked out of marjory stoneman douglas high school at 10:00 this morning in florida. they gathered at the school's football field for 17 minutes. one for each of the parkland shooting victims. >> it's not an issue of age limits or just mental health. it's an issue of assault

weapons. >> from outside the white house to indianapolis thousands of students took part in the nationwide protest. in charlotte, north carolina students placed flowers in front of the names of each victim. >> we want students to know that their voice matters. >> only about 2% of schools nationwide are taking part in the walk out. in philadelphia students feel the protests don't recognize everyday violence in urban communities. >> it's not like the issue doesn't matter because of course it matters it's lives that just got lost. but at the same time we're not cherishing all lives. >> house minority leader nancy pelosi tweeted her support for the cause saying quote thank you to all of the dmv students here in dc today and across the nation. we hear you and we are honored to stand with you. hashtag enough is enough, hashtag never again. and the gun control protests don't end with the walk out. many students are organizing voter drives and the march for

our lives rally for school safety event is happening later this week. in the newsroom jacky ward, kpix5. >> many students are struggling with what to tell their children about school violence and safety. psychologists regular mend shielding younger than six from extremely upsetting news. >> we sometimes need to address the news but we don't want our child losing sleep over events that are relatively low likelihood for them but truly scary. >> parents should focus on the fact that there are many adults working to keep students safe. for more coverage of todays bay area walk outs including video head to our website. another big story right now is a lot of the rain that's popping up across the bay area at this hour from the south bay to the north bay. i want to take you straight to

the north bay right now where thunderstorm activity is happening, lightning strikes and just got video tweeted out to us from someone in petaluma. right there you can see that lightning strike right on highway 116 near eli road. another lightning strike just occurred nearby and yes hail is associated with this system. so a lot of folks in the pet lieu ma area noticing some heavy hail. it might be happening right here off of arnold drive. so heavy downpours across the north bay. strong rain, hail, lightning, be careful out there. we're also seeing it in many areas all across the bay area near sonoma and across the east bay as well. we'll track it all coming up in a little bit. >> new at noon therenos founder elizabeth holmes has been charged with massive fraud by the sec. she along with the company's former president are both charged with raising more than $700 million from investors through an elaborate years long fraud.

the commission says they exaggerated or made false statements about the company's technology, business, and financial performance. there is a new development in the deadly shootings. >> the pathway home is suspending indefinitely. it's for veterans suffering from ptsd and other disorders. albert wong took three staff members hostage and killed all of them before turning the gun on himself. the remaining clients of the pathway home are in temporary housing. the final votes are being tallied in pennsylvania in a closely watched special election. connor lamb is expected to maintain his slim lead when the provisional ballots are counted. he declared victory last night in a district that's been under republican control for 15 years. president trump won that district by 20 points in 2016 and he visited twice to support lamb's opponent. >> the firing of secretary of state rex tillerson could mark

the beginning of a major shake up in the trump administration. just last week former goldman sa sachs president resigned. according to reports he was offered the job on the phone call with the president last night. before joining the media he worked as an economist and served in the office of management and budget during the regularen administration. democrats on the house intelligence -- reagan administration. democrats say republicans prematurely closed their investigation into russian interference. >> democrats claiming to have found significant evidence of collusion between the kremlin and the trump campaign. a draft copy of the gop report claims there was no evidence of collusion. republicans argue the

investigation is winding down after interviews and key documents reviewed. >> the united kingdom will expel 23 russian diplomats over the nerve agent attack on a former spy and his daughter. both are currently hospitalized. the diplomats have a week to leave. they also announced a range of economic and diplomatic measures including the suspension of bilateral contacts with russia. this is the biggest expulsion since the cold war. russia claims it had no motive in the incident and just this morning the royal family announced they will not attend the soccer world cup in russia in the wake of the attack. drivers will see more cameras installed in busy intersections in san francisco but they won't necessarily be catching those who run red lights. what they will be monitoring instead. >> reporter: the city says it's all about traffic management. san francisco already has 90 of these cameras in place. many of them here along market street. and the plan is to buy 270 more

for 1.200-0000. though these cameras are mounted on traffic signals they are not red light cameras. the purpose is to monitor traffic in realtime. >> to let us know what traffic patterns are occurring around special eventeds or as part of the normal commute. >> the cameras are also being installed on street poles and do not record or snap pictures. they're monitored only by the traffic management center. >> we can send out our officers to direct traffic or do anything else we can to insure we're helping traffic move as efficiently as possible. >> this map shows where cameras are currently installed with green dots and future locations in yellow and purple covering areas of downtown, the richmond, sunset, and bay view districts. the 270 new cameras are set to be installed by the end of 2019.

>> a former first daughter is in the bay area today. what her trip has to do with empowering young girls coming up. >> yesterday you got to see the giants mascot in action. today we went to oakland to test stomper the a's mascot. fire fighting is a very dangerous profession. we have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. and for us the expert in gas and electric is pg&e. we run about 2,500/2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls

pg&e is responding to that call as well. and so when we show up to a fire and pg&e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. i rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. utilizing pg&e's talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. the things we do every single day that puts ourselves in harm's way, and to have a partner that is so skilled at what they do is indispensable, and i couldn't ask for a better partner.

concord and antioch a lot of this moved from downtown san francisco across the bay towards this location. so it looks like pleasanton will be next. san jose dealing with strong showers as well. this afternoon thunderstorms in the forecast. here's the future cast through 2:00 or 3:00 we'll continue to see this type of activity out there. so be careful, slick roads are very likely in many locations. by 3:00 we might get a bit of a break. overnight tonight also looks like things are clearing up. early tomorrow morning we'll be similar to this morning where we'll see some lines of rain coming through our area. and tomorrow will be similar again a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. wind speeds around 9 to 12 miles per hour. southwest winds in pleasanton, 16 in hayward. livermore at 53.

50 degrees in oakland. and sunset happening tonight at 7:26 p.m. you may see it because we are getting some clearing later on. sunrise tomorrow morning at 7:20. our high temperatures will only be a few degrees warmer than right now. mid to upper 50s for your forecast. 58 for vallejo, oakland, and 55 in san francisco. let's take you up to the mountains here it is at trucky right now. the storm clouds, i was watching a lot of blowing sideways snow. they've done a great job plowing all of the fresh powder up there. they are getting plenty of it. an avalanche watch was just issued through 7 p.m. on saturday because of heavy snow and gusty winds. so it's unstable all around the back country surrounding the lake tahoe area. still have winter warnings in effect for the sierra foothills and another one will be issued on thursday and friday. right now snow flurries throughout trucky interstate 80. and they're going to see a good amount on top of what they just got. 17 to 18 inches already. and they're expecting to get a lot more.

actor allen cummings is taking on a new reel on the cbs drama called "instinct". >> he plays dr. dylan rinehart who ends up helping new york police after a killer starts planting crimes based on his book. earlier today i had a chance to chat with him about the show. >> what made you say i want to take on this role? >> there are so many different facets to him. one of the biggest things that drew me to it is i'm gay, the character is gay and he's married to a man.
