and the 98 year old nun leading her team to the ncaa sweet 16. >> it was all this is the "cbs weekend news." >> quijano: good evening, i'm elaine quijano. the weekend started with the dramatic friday night firing of the number two man at the fbi. andrew mccabe was expected to retire today on his 50th birthday. the controversial firing could cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost benefits. the weekend is closing with president trump twitter bashing top former fbi officials including mccabe. errol barnett is at the white house. >> president trump continues to express growing frustration at the special counsel's investigation. writing the mueller probe should never have been started, which hunt. he also cast doubt on report her-- doubts on reports andrew mccabe fired on friday took

we rely on. president trump's weekend tweets even attracted this rebuke from former c, a director john brennan. calling the commander in chief a disgrace demagogue headed for the dust bin of history. now cbs news has learned the special counsel already interviewed andrew mccabe about his conversations with the president. and we have learned robert mueller's team has mccabe's memos which is set to corroborate james comey's version of events. elaine. >> quijano: errol barnett, thank you. reports in "the new york times" and britain's observer suggest facebook data was misused to sway voters in 20916 election. tony dokoupil has more on this. >> a voter profiling firm called cam bridges analytica is now at the center of a massive alleged data breech at facebook, reportedly leveraged to help donald trump win the 2016 presidential election. >> we spent a million dollars harvesting tens of millions of facebook profiles and those

profiles were used as the basis of the algorithms that became the foundation of cambridge analytica itself. the company itself was founded on using facebook data. christopher wylie is a former research director for cambridge analytica. he alleges that the company secretly accessed more than 50 million facebook user accounts. the trump campaign told the associated press it never used data from cambridge analytica. the campaign used the republican national committee for its voter data. and he claims that voter data were used from another source to support the victory in 2016 are false. daniel pat isson a senior reporter from tech republic vected cambridge analytica method and impact. >> the trump campaign has said that cambridge analytica doesn't work and cambridge analytica has said it didn't use that data from 50 million facebook users. should we believe either of them? >> no, of course not. both the campaign and cambridge

pennsylvania, sunday, two weeks after the teenager ran off with 45 year old kevin esterly a family friend. authorities found them stat saturday in playa del carmen mexico. esterly was taken into custody in the u.s. the or deal began march 59. amy vanished after she wasp dropped off at her bus stop. police say amy and esterly bought one way airline tickets. they flew from philadelphia to dallas and ultimately to cancun. >> it should be noted that their flight to cancun, mexico, occurred at approximately the same time as her mother was making the initial runaway report total intown police department. >> on february 9th amy's mother mui lu discovered amy had listed esterly as her stepfather on school records. a police affidavit revealed he had signed amy out of school ten times between november and december without her mother's knowledge. luu also found text messages that suggested esterly was

romanically involved with her daughter. amy is 16, the legal age of consent in pennsylvania. esterly, a married father of four befriended amy's family through church. amy was close with esterly's daughter and she often went on vacation with them. we sat down with mui lu amy's mother earlier in the week but she didn't want to show her face on camera. >> you had kevin over to your house. >> yes, why for meals. >> for meals, for birthdays, amy birthday. >> amy's mother told me sunday she was so relieved when they found her, she started crying. elaine. >> quijano: meg oliver, meg, thank you. >> it is election night in russia. no surprise who won. vladimir putin was re-elected with over 70% of the vote. the turnout may have been lower than he wanted. about 52% of russia's nearly 111 million voters weighed in. elizabeth palm certificate in

moscow. >> russia's election had all the signs of a real contest. opposition candidates, ballot boxes, registered voters. this is what the russians called managed democracy. >> a system built to guarantee a vladimir putin will inwin. asked as he cast his vote this morning what kind of turnout he hopeed for, he said. >> just enough to let me fulfill the role of presidentness there has been a huge effort to get out the vote today. in moscow alone they spent nearly $800,000 on balloons and decorations. the idea is to create a kind of festive excitement about this election. and there are other incentives. at this polling station in moscow voters could have a free blood test to screen for sciens of cancer. some places laid out treats. and in the arctic, reindeer hearders had their balloting

manuel bojorquez is at the scene. >> a closer view of individual yof the collapse appears to show the pedestrian bridges north end buckled first. today at the site the priority is cleanup now that the vehicles and bodies of those who were killed have been recovered. the six victims include alexa durnan a fiu freshman studying political science, joe smitha is her uncle. >> i think of the inexens that put this together. >> florida senator marco rubeia today said work could have triggered thursday's collapse. >> there were these rods that begin side, like cables and they were being tightened. and they call it, you know, post tension application. and it is during that work that the bridge collapsed glin beginning on the north end w there were also questions about cracks on that north end that were reported tuesday to state officials by an engineer with fig bridge group. >> obviously some repairs or whatever will have to be done. but from a safety perspective, we don't see that there is any issue there. so we are not concerned about it

from that perspective, although obviously the cracking is not good and something is going to have to be, you know, done to repair that. >> the state said the employee who was called was off and heard the message friday, a day after the collapse. >> the revelation seemed to only escalate the finger pointing between state transportation officials. the university and contractors, all of whom say they will cooperate with the ongoing ntsb investigation. >> an ntsb investigator said the board is aware about reports of cracks on the bridge but cautioned that does not always indicate a bridge sun safe. classes will resume here at fiu tomorrow and the school's president said there will be a moment of silence at 1:47 p.m the time the bridge fell. >> elaine? >> manuel bojorquez, manny, thank you. >> a cirque du soleil acrobat took a terrifying fall last night during a performance in tampa, florida. yan arnaud lost his grip and

i new study fieppeds when you drink bottled water, in many cases are you also swallowing plastics. the world health srgs is now looking into the potential health risks. anna werner has more on this. >> scientists found pony teeseses of plastic in more than 90% of the 250 bottles of water they tested. virtually all were too small to seesm the largest, about the width of a human hair. the study identified some of the plastic is polypropylene, the same type of plases particular used in bottle caps to find those tiny pieces scain tyeses used a special dye that sticks to plastic. those lighter bits you see

floating, they say that's the plastic. professor sherri mason ran the test commissioned by nonprofit journalism group orb media. >> if you are drinking only bottled w59er and you do this every day over a year, you literally are talking thousands of pieces of plastic that are you ingesting simply from the bottled water that you are drinking. >> the water came from 11 different brands in nine contracts and the report says the amount of particles var'sed from bottle to bottle, even among packs from the same brand. but the bottled water contained twice as much plastic as in a previous study of tap water. the bottled water industry group is pusng back saying the report is not based on sound science and unnecessarily scares consumers. some of the companies including nestle water said they do their own tests and cannot confirm the findings here. they all say they adhere to strict safety standards but some companies confirm they are aware of the issue of microplastic

>> california's first driverless buses started running this month in san ramon near san francisco. the electric shuttle requests carry 12 people, six sitting and six standing. john blackstone climbed aboard. >> most driverless cars being tested in america still require a human ready to grab the wheel or hit the brakes if technology fails. but the shuttle bus making its way through san ramon, california, has no driver, no steering wheel, no brake pedal. it's the first completely driverless vehicle licensed to operate on public roads in california. >> this is a big day for us. >> randy i was aki the head of the county transportation authority, this is an exciting ride indeed. >> this is the first, we're on a public street. >> actually this is my first time, after working for months

>> quijano: cats el ranchers are sicialging the wagons in the war of words against the makers of veggie burgers and other meat substitutes. they filed a petition with the usda say lab grown and plant-based food should not be allowed to use the word meat and beef on their label. jamie yuccas has more on this. >> on this sprawling northern california ranch, kelley's family has raised black an gus cattle for five generations. >> we spent a lot of time out here with them. >> fog ert also represents hundreds of ranchers as the executive vice president of the u.s. cattlemen's association. for them, defining meat is easy. >> when consumers think of meat, you want them to think of these guys. >> yes. >> we want them to think of this. we don't want them to thif a laboratory. we don't want them to think of something created and a microscope within the

association is concerned about the increase of animal-free products that have names like this one. beefy beyond beef crumbles, a plant-based product, the company says tastes like real beef. >> the cattlemen's federal petition argues the labels beef or meat should inform consumers that the product is derived naturally from animals. as opposed to alternative protein such as plants. or artificially grown in a laboratory. >> this san opportunity. >> but ethan brown the c.e.o. of beyond meat says it's time to rethink that definition. >> the reason we want to use the word "meat" is that we firmly believe that this is a piece of meat, that if you look at these not in terms of its origin but in terms of its exotion, we are hitting the key points. >> in some stores these animalfree alternatives are currently sold alongside their competitors. >> we just don't want there to be any confusion when it comes to our product. >> do you think it's confusing to the consumer? >> no i think the consumer is smart, i think the consumer

new at six: a city leader lashes out at the if they cannot do with an issue like this, we are in big trouble. a city leader lashes out at the san francisco fire department after massive blaze gusts a building in north beach. investigators in san francisco are working to figure out the cause of a fire. the flames erupted before 7:30 pm last night on union street. it took 140 firefighters nearly 4 hours to get it under control. in the end, five businesses were wiped out and most of the building guided. one san francisco city supervisor says the fire department did not do a good enough job responding to the blaze. kpix 5 katie nielsen tells us

that he is calling for the fire chief to resign. >> reporter: the city supervisor for this area aaron paxton says he was eating dinner in the area last night when the fire started. he criticized the fire department saying they did not respond fire -- fast enough, tooth locating water on the fire, and did not put the fire out fast enough.>> i know the chief says that they are fire experts. tonight was a failure by the fire department.>> reporter: that criticism by supervisor erin peskin came last night while firefighters were actively fighting the fire still burning in the building at the corner of union street and columbus avenue in the heart of san francisco's north beach neighborhood. bystanders could be heard yelling at firefighters in the cell phone video.
