the texas capital. kpix 5 reporter jackie ward is live in the newsroom with how events unfolded. >> reporter: police say information they gathered over the last day or two led them to consider mark condit a suspect. surveillance teams were then able to locate his vehicle in round rock, texas, leading to the confrontation and explosion. police collected evidence wednesday morning from the scene where the austin bombing suspect blew himself up. law enforcement sources have identified the bomber to cbs news as 23-year-old mark condit. investigators say they had tracked him down to a red roof inn north of austin overnight. they were waiting for tactical teams to arrive but when left the hotel in an suv, officers closed in on him. >> as members of the austin police department s.w.a.t. team approached the vehicle, the suspect detonated a bomb inside the vehicle. >> reporter: authorities say condit is behind at least five explosions this month, four in austin that killed two people and one in a fedex facility

near san antonio earlier this week. we got these surveillance photos. it's believed the suspect dropped off two suspicious packages at a south austin fedex office and even though condit is dead, he may have already planned other attacks so the threat may not be over. >> be vigilant. we are concerned that there still may be other devices out there. >> reporter: there was a heavy police presence in the austin suburb of pflugerville wednesday where condit lived. find it hard to believe. >> nice as family as you want to have nice as neighbors as you want to have. >> reporter: investigators say at this point, they don't have a motive and don't know if he had any accomplices. one s.w.a.t. member was blown back by the explosion and had minor injuries. in the newsroom, jackie ward, kpix 5. back here in the bay area, let's take a live look out at sfo where it has been rough for some travelers today. so far, the weather has led to more than 150 cancellations

santa rosa officials have been working with cal fire in recent weeks to clean out debris in burned-out neighborhoods. today in san francisco a federal judge had a hearing on a climate change case. two bay area cities are suing oil companies over global warming and rising sea levels. kpix 5's jessica flores is live in san francisco to break down the lawsuit. >> reporter: this case is getting a lot of interest, so much so, it was a packed courtroom. it also required an overflow courtroom which was also packed. and it has an unusual start. before the judge will decide if this case can indeed move forward to trial, he asked for a tutorial from both sides on climate science. so the cities of oakland and san francisco brought on leading scientists to discuss everything from sea level rising to melting ice to global warming and coastal flooding. city attorneys say "big oil"

is to blame for climate change which the cities says rising cities will wipe out the bay area. the lawsuit names chevron, exxon, bp, shell and conocophillips. the cities seek billions for building seawalls and infrastructure to protect the waterfront. >> many fossil fuel companies were aware of these effects and continued to choose profits at the expense of residents. >> reporter: representatives for chevron also gave a presentation on climate science and the representative said the oil industry accepts that humans are the driving force of global warming, but oil companies argue they can't be held liable for emissions that are indeed government- regulated. now, so everyone here, both parties are agreeing that people are responsible for global warming. but again, these companies are saying that they should not be held liable. the judge still has to decide whether or not to dismiss the

case and that decision is expected next month. live in san francisco, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. a preliminary hearing is under way for two former sheriff's deputies. they are accused of beating a man in san francisco back in 2015. the former alameda county deputies are accused of beating stanislaus petrov two years ago: he led officers on pursue from the east bay to the san francisco mission district. surveillance video caught deputies beating him. they are charged with assault and battery. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg will speak in the next 24 hours about a data harvesting scandal that plunged his company into crisis: news site axios reports he is hoping to rebuild trust. kpix 5's anne makovec says scrutiny of facebook is intensifying. >> reporter: people here at facebook's headquarters are likely getting a little nervous as lawmakers from the uk to washington, d.c. are demanding answers. now the attorneys general of

complex that's still being built on 11th street. facebook's buildings will have roughly a million square feet of office space and could hold as many as 6,000 workers. today on capitol hill, senators are expected to press the homeland security secretary about the department's efforts to secure state elections systems. today's testimony will focus on when russian agents targeted election systems in 21 states including california ahead of the 2016 general election. senators have criticized the department for not moving quickly enough to prevent the russian threat. >> the department of homeland security and the fbi alerted states to the threat. the warnings did not provide enough information or go to the right person in every case. >> the senate intelligence committee is now launching a new effort to prevent foreign meddling in this year's midterm elections. president trump is criticized for a phone conversation he had this week with russian president vladimir putin. on monday, mr. trump went against the advice of his

new set of mobile showers for the homeless. new at noon, a ribbon cutting this morning in marin county to celebrate a new set of mobile showers for the homeless. two trailers have three showers each and they have already been up and running for weeks. their locations will alternate between novato and san rafael. the goal is to provide about 300 clean and safe showers a week for people in need. >> how much better does it make you feel when you get up in the morning and have a shower to start your day, you know? just some of the basic necessities that they are being able to give people here and i love it. >> plans are in the works to expand the program to cover sausalito, marin city and point reyes. an estimated 1100 people are homeless in marin county. now to storm watch. winter weather warnings are in

we have had all kinds of colors on this since this morning. some areas of scattered downpours but right now light rain through st. helena, yountville and napa, light drizzle so that's a nice welcomed relief. a little bit of a break but this afternoon we could see the chance of thunderstorms through hercules and el sobrante right now. you're dealing with some rain but also not as bad as earlier. hopefully the ground will have a chance to dry up a little bit. here's the view of some of the storm clouds. this is our cliff house camera. we are going to deal with some strong winds. so we'll notice that later on. afternoon thunderstorms still in the forecast for today. keep your eye to the sky of course. if you hear thunder, go indoors. heaviest wind and rain will start tonight through the morning commute tomorrow. so 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. would be the timeline for the

most rain to get to us. concord right now 58. oakland 59. livermore 61 degrees. of course, this is atmospheric river which means it's warmer out there. it definitely feels tropical considering. our temperatures are definitely above average. sunset happening tonight at 7:22. sunrise tomorrow at 7:09. most likely not getting much of a view of that because of the cloud coverage. here's the futurecast. here we go. this afternoon, it may look clear according to this futurecast. but we could see that chance of thunderstorms as temperatures warm and instability rises. later tonight 9:00 we'll start to see the rain coming in but by 11:00 it will be widespread and come down heavy. and it's going to stay that way through the morning hours. it will finally start to taper off late morning tomorrow but still that morning commute is a moment of big concern because we'll have a few hours of heavy rain overnight. so by the time you wake up tomorrow morning there could be some flooding problems. 11:00 tonight, look at the winds, 27-mile-per-hour gusts up to 45 miles per hour expected for the santa cruz mountains across the north bay
