good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a massive fire at a movie set in new york city overnight claimed the life of a firefighter. the fire broke out in harlem and quickly spread. crews were shooting the new ed norton/bruce willis movie called "motherless brooklyn." norton spotted flames coming out of the basement. the building was empty. the fire quickly spread and the firemen had to get out. >> somehow while backing out of that building, firefighters davidson was separated from the rest of the unit. a search ensued. members tried desperately to find firefighter davidson. when they did, he was unconscious. >> the dead firefighter michael davidson was 37 years old. he leaves behind a wife and four children. the cause of the fire is

unknown, and five others were injured. and now to the latest shakeup at the white house. john bolton says he sees his role as president trump's new national security adviser as an honest broker. president trump announced john bolton, a former u.s. ambassador, was replacing the adviser. he replaced mcmaster yesterday. the white house said mcmaster's exit had been under discussion for some time. but it follows the ouster of rex tillerson and news that the president's lead attorney is also leaving. hena doba has more. good morning. >> good morning. the revolving door at the white house continues to turn. john bolton will take over the house in april. he's a hard-liner including on north korea and iran. the president confirmed yesterday what had been speculated about for weeks, tweeting in part, i am pleased to announce that effective april 9th former u.s. ambassador john

bolton will be my new national security adviser. i'm very thankful for the service of h.r. mcmaster who's % done an outstanding job and will always be my friend. john bolton seemed somewhat surprised by the timing when asked about it on fox news where he's a frequent contributor. >> i didn't really expect an announcement this afternoon. >> bolton is known for taking some hawkish positions. in 2015 he penned an on ed in "the new york times" writing to stop iran, bomb iran. he wrote in "the wall street journal" about the legal case for striking north korea first. senate minority leader chuck schumer tweeted in part about his appointment. mr. bolton's tendency to try to solve every gop problem with the

american military first is a troubling one. hi hope he will temper his instincts around the globe. >> when he served as u.s. ambassador, he was not able to win confirmation. during the bush administration. he was a recess appointment. so that speaks to some of the controversy that he has stoked in the past. >> the national security adviser is not a position that needs to be confirmed by the senate. and general mcmaster wasn't the only departure from yesterday. john dowd, the lead attorney representing president trump in the special counsel investigation, also stepped aside. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. a former "playboy" model who claims she had a ten-month affair with president trump apologized to the first lady. in an interview on cnn, karen mcdougal alleges the affair started in 2006. she said the first time they had sex he tried to pay her. mcdougal claims she ended the relationship in 2007 because she felt guilty and given the chance would tell melania trump she was sorry. >> he never talked about his

wife, and i never brought her up. obviously there's a reason i didn't bring it up because i felt guilty about it. the president and melania trump were married in 2005. the president denies having an affair with mcdougal. porn star stormy daniels said she was having an affair the same time as mcdougal. you can watch stormy daniels' interview on "60 minutes" on sunday night. she speaks about the alleged relationship. president trump has denied that affair as well. well, early this morning congress passed a $1.3 trillion spending bill to keep the government funded through september. the president is expected to sign the bill today. the senate passed the measure hours after the house averting a shutdown at midnight tonight. the bill provides big spending increases for defense and domestic programs. some republicans opposed to the increased spending didn't relent until the end. >> and this morning the fbi's investigating a cyber attack on

the city of atlanta that's holding municipal systems hostage. the attack shut down many of the city's computer systems. it's unclear if any personal data has been compromised. the ransomled fois bitcoin. the systems affected include customers' ability to pay city bills and access to court-related information. tomorrow nearly 1 million people are expected to protest gun violence in the march for our lives rally. the demonstration comes in the wake of the florida high school shooting where 17 people died. students from marjory stoneman douglas high organized the march. over 800 sister marches are planned in the united states and overseas. the grassroots movement has raised more than $4 million to help fund the protest. and we'll have live coverage of tomorrow's "march for our lives" rally here on cbs and on

our streaming service cbsn. demonstrations against the police shooting of an unarmed black man in sacramento shut down a freeway and delayed a basketball game. protesters shut down interstate 5, the major north-south freeway at rush hour and then blocked ticket holders at the arena for the sacramento kings game. they were protesting sunday's fatal shooting of stephon clark. officers believed he was armed but he was holding a cell phone when officers fired 20 shots.lln days before the las vegas shooting show the gunman stephen paddock preparing for the attack. the video doesn't show the motive but it shows the great lengths he went through to kill 58 people before the attack. >> reporter: the video begins six days before the shooting. monday, september 25th, stephen paddock is seen checking into n the mandalay bay.

what follows is a haunting collection of images, capturing paddock getting on and off elevators, eating sushi in the hotel restaurant, interacting with staff, and transporting his arsenal of 23 guns and thousands of rounds of ammo in nearly two dozen suitcases and containers. the last day we see him is the day of the shooting gambling all night at a slot machine area before returning to his room at 7:37 in the morning. at quarter past noon he makes one more trip to the parking garage, returning in just a few minutes with two more suitcases. he gets off the elevator a few seconds before 12:30. a little more than nine hours later jason aldean would start playing and 25 minutes after that, the shooting would begin. nearly six months later we may know more about what stephen

paddock was doing and when, but still nothing about why. >> i think if we don't know by now, i doubt that we ever will know. >> reporter: randy sutton was a lieutenant with the las vegas police department for nearly 24 years before retiring in 2010. >> stephen paddock is like the boogeyman. he appeared out of nowhere, didn't appear to have any particular motivation, and at this point it's just a head scratcher. >> $31 million was raised to help the victims of the shooting. that money should be distributed by the end of this month. families of the 58 dead get $275,000 each and more to those who suffered brain damage or were paralyzed. last november a class-action lawsuit was filed against the mgm hotel. jim axelrod, cbs news, new york. the 16-year-old girl shot at a high school on tuesday is brain dead.

"the new york times" says a college athlete died in bermuda from a fall. 19-year-old mark dombroski was found at the base of a 35-foot cliff on monday. he was in bermuda for a rugby tournament. authorities say there was no sign of foul play. they didn't indicate whether he had alcohol or medication in his system. the "houston chronicle" says

the first shots were fired in what could be a costly trade war between the u.s. and china. early this morning china responded to president trump's decision to impose six tariffs on as much as $60 fwl on chinese imports. china announced it may charge high import duties on items including pork, apples, and steel pipe. china called on washington to negotiate a settlement and said the higher u.s. tariff seriously undermine global trading. china does not want to trade war but is not afraid to engage in one. president trump announced the u.s. tariffs thursday blaming the trade deficit for the loss of american jobs and also blamed china for stealing u.s. technology. he's calling for restrictions on investments in the u.s. the dow slid recording one of the biggest drops in the trump presidency. american companies with substantial sales like caterpillar and boeing were hit hardest.

this morning stock markets in asia saw drops in the arket. day the dow sank some 72 points or nearly 3 the s&p 500 lost 68 points. the nasdaq dropped 178 points. citigroup is putting rest ns on gun sales for new retail clients. citi will require clients not to sell firearms without background checks or anyone under the age of 21 and not to sell high-capacity magazines. citibank is the first bank to change its policies following the school shooting in florida. the founder of toys "r" us has died. charles p. lazarus was 94 years old. last week hoe announced they were going out of business. and the weather channel has a new owner. producer and comedian byron allen paid a reported $300 million. allen called the weather channel a tremendous asset he planned to expand. he owns seven tv channels including comedy.tv.
