the accident happened in the area where 101 meets highway 85. this is the view from chopper 5 according to the chp. the driver of this blue tesla was heading southbound on the freeway when the accident happened. this video on the ground just coming in. you can see the damage, debris scattered all over the highway. and the tesla almost unrecognizable from the front. the tesla hit the dividing wall and caught on fire. there were five cars total involved in the crash. flames could be seen for miles. the driver of the tesla was taken to the hospital with major injuries. no word on other injuries. a deadly crash in santa clara forced road closures near a south bay college this morning. it happened in santa clara between harrison and lafayette streets near santa clara university. that's what's left of the vehicle. the driver was pronounced dead

at the scene. no word on what caused this accident. police are asking the public to avoid that area while they continue to investigate. right now crews are investigating after a two- alarm blaze broke out in a busy shopping area in berkeley. flames started around 10 a.m. at an asphalt plant in berkeley on virginia street near 580. anne makovec is live at the scene. back in police custody this morning for breaking a restraining order following a domestic dispute that happened this month on march 3rd. we have a picture of him when he was first booked for his first arrest just a few weeks ago. before today, he had been free on bail after pleading not guilty earlier this month to a slew of charges including domestic violence and assault. around 8:30 p.m. on march 3rd police responded to a call for domestic violence incident on hill. by the time they got there, smith had already left. a warrant was issued for his arrest and he turned himself in. the raiders released smith after that first arrest a few weeks ago but he hasn't played a down since 2015. he was suspended from the nfl indefinitely for violating its substance abuse and personal conduct policies. a warrant was recently issued yet again for smith's arrest and police worked with his lawyer to arrange a date for him to surrender. in the statement, sfpd said:

this morning, mr. smith surrendered himself to svu investigators and will be processed for the warrant and three counts of misdemeanor violations of a protective stay-away order. before the 9ers released smith back in august 2015, smith had racked up 33.5 tackles in just two seasons. from san francisco police headquarters, jackie ward, kpix 5. back to the two-alarm fire in berkeley this morning. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at the scene with more. >> reporter: yeah. can you hear me now? the fire is out but it was a tough fight this morning. there aren't a lot of hydrants in the area. this is an industrial area. take a look at the view from chopper 5 of some of the damage left behind here this morning. no cost estimate yet. firefighters are in clean-up mode and they are trying to find out if there are any

hazardous materials left behind. this is a facility that heats oil for asphalt production. the fire started at 9: 45 a.m. the workers got out safely and train traffic was immediately hauled for amtrak and southern pacific railroad in both directions here in berkeley as firefighters worked to put out this fire at the asphalt plant. >> it burns pretty good once it catches. it was dark black smoke as you saw. >> reporter: there were some power lines down on the tracks for a time. pg&e cut the power and removed those lines before allowing trains through. no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. live in berkeley, anne makevoc, kpix 5. averting a government shutdown, president trump says he has signed the $1.3 trillion spending measure after saying he was considering a veto. mola lenghi more from the

white house. >> reporter: president trump signed a $1.3 trillion spending bill into law despite his reservations. >> there are a lot of things that we shouldn't had have in this bill but we were in a sense forced if we want to build our military, we were forced to have. but i say to congress, i will never sign another bill like this again. i'm not going to do it again. >> reporter: in an early- morning tweet, he said he was considering vetoing the plan because it didn't protect daca recipients and didn't fully fund his border wall. >> i was thinking about doing the veto but because of the incredible gains that we have been able to make for the military, that overrode any of our thinking. >> reporter: democrats say it was the president who backed off the deal to fix daca and fund the border wall last month. >> we gave him every penny he asked for, for 10 years and the "dreamers" and he said no. >> reporter: they passed the bill with bipartisan support but didn't have the votes to

override a veto. the president's last-minute veto threat surprised his staff, who had promised he would sign the bill. but twitter surprises are nothing new for this administration. thursday the president announced he was firing national security adviser h.r. mcmaster and replacing him with john bolton. >> demonstrates i think the limbo that i'm in because i didn't really expect that announcement, um, this afternoon. >> reporter: bolton is known for his aggressive posture on foreign policy writing last month that it was perfectly legitimate to strike north korea first and in 2015, recommending the u.s. bomb iran. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. new at noon, craigslist says it is shutting down its personals section. it will no longer operation the portion of its website to seek encounters with strangers. this is two days after the senate approved legislation called the stop enabling sex traffickers act which paves

the way for sex trafficking victims to sue websites that facilitate their abuse. the legislation is now awaiting the president's signature. the personal section is still visible on the craigslist homepage for now but it redirects users to the announcement about the shutdown. heads up, drivers. the golden gate bridge will get a new look. take a look at these renderings. designs are in the works for a new toll collection system that involves installing a gantry south of the current tollbooth for the bridge. the structure could support various equipment like cameras and lights. in order to collect those tolls. the goal is to have it blend in with the architecture of the landmark. today golden gate bridge district officials will be considering various design options for the structure. these three that you see. they are not voting on anything just yet. coming up, the latest details from france. a suspect who took people hostage in a grocery market is dead and now isis is claiming responsibility. >> they are frustrating and annoying. the new demand for a crackdown on robo calls.

a hostage standoff at a supermarket. authorities say a gunman shouted in arabic, god is great, i'll kill you all, as he opened fire in the shop and took hostages. this mother was desperate to get her children out of school just down the street. french president emmanuel macron said the hostage taking incident appeared to be a terrorist attack. the gunman, who is said to be moroccan, reportedly called himself a soldier of the "islamic state" as he stormed the store. french media reports say earlier in the day, the suspect hijacked a car and killed a passenger, then shot at police officers who were jogging in a city nearby. the gunman reportedly asked for the release of saleh and salaam, the only surviving suspect from the terror attacks in paris in 2015 that killed 130 people. most inside the supermarket got out safely and after several tense hours, security forces launched a raid

this body camera video showing the moment two officers opened fire on stephon clark. police believe that clark was smashing car windows on sunday. officers say that he fled to his grandparents' backyard and they thought clark had a gun. they shot him. 20 rounds were shot. the suspect died. a cell phone was found not a gun. relatives are speaking out about the death of a suspect who was in a shootout with police in san francisco. they say they called police after jehad eid thought someone was after him. an officer and four others were hurt in a shooting at a shop near london and geneva. officers opened fire after eid shot at them. his uncle said that's out of character. >> he was a very sweet kid. he might have some issues. most people have issues. but he is really, really a nice kid. he is not violent. >> according to the "san

francisco chronicle," eid was on probation for a 2015 armed robbery. investigators are still looking into who shot the victims inside the shop. robo calls are on the rise. tech company says consumers received 18 billion in 2017 which is a 76% increase from the year before. the government and phone companies are taking steps to stop them but consumer groups say it's not enough. here's anna werner. >> reporter: virginia real estate agent jim duncan says he gets about 7 to 10 robo calls a week and for someone whose business is built on getting new clients -- >> it's a massive annoyance that really interferes with my business. >> reporter: last month alone, a tech company found consumers received 2.7 billion calls. fcc chairman ajit pai -- >> they are on the same page in terms of the priority it

deserves. >> reporter: in the past year, the fcc proposed over $200 million in fines against illegal spoofing by telemarketers. and the commission recently adopted new rules allowing phone companies to block calls that are likely to be fraudulent. the telecommunications trade group ctia says alternate wireless carriers provide blocking of robo calls. one says scam likely for suspect fraudulent calls on the screen. verizon says it has spam alert which warns customers about identified robo calls and sprint has premium caller id which shows caller names that are not in your contact list. but consumer groups say even with those steps, people still get far too many robo calls. >> if the commission really wants to protect consumers quickly they should put

deadlines on the implementation of the authentication requirements and be implemented as soon as possible. >> reporter: anna werner, cbs news, new york. a check of your weather. we were off to a drier and cooler start today and things are nice outside now. ajit paiyou can see these clouds that are scattered around the horizon. further north rain and it will be moving through the area dropping rain on and off throughout the day mostly in the evening hours. our satellite-radar shows this brief break we have right here, this nice clearing pattern. but then this low pressure center right here is going to drop in and with it all of these showers, all of these clouds, are going to start to move in over the weekend so that's what you'll need your umbrella for but it's not going to stick around for long. looking at how this times out,

right now, relatively clear, but again, look, showers in the north bay and around the evening hours if you are going out late tonight be careful on the roads because they are going to be wet. they will move through. moving into saturday we have a second round of storms mostly showers. they are going to move out and then by sunday morning, things dry up. a clearing pattern is going to be in. and then by monday morning, things will be nice and beautiful for a great week ahead if you are planning on anything outside. so things to remember, we have leftover showers sticking around, cooler temperatures, the unsettled pattern of storms is going to stick around through the weekend and it will be drier and warmer behind that. our high temperatures today cooler than yesterday, mid-50s and low 60s. winter storm warning in the sierra above 2500 feet, expecting up to 18 inches of snow, lake county 4 to 14 inches for snow. as far as our tahoe report, if

but if you lift the lower eyelid -- or lower the lower eyelid it always looks red so you can always compare ited with other side. if the other size is white, that is red. so buttercup has bulgy eyes like a pug or terrier so those eyes get damaged more easily by going underneath bushes and things like that sticks can get into them and they get -- so here we are showing a photo of the red eye so you can see what i'm talking about. when that happens, when there's damage to the cornea, it's painful and the muscles of the icon strict. a dye allows us to see where the ulcer is. it's only taken up where the injury is. so i can't tell if this is the one. you can see as you look at the photo around 2:00 you can see that bright green spot and that's where buttercup's ulcer is right now. so we monitor them and then, you know, if there's any discharge you need to bring
