it is friday, march 30th, 2018. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking news, a manhunt is over for the suspect accused of killing an off duty officer. the alleged killer impersonating a cop. tensions between the u.s. and russia rise. now american diplomats are being expelled from russia in retaliation for russian diplomats being expelled from the u.s. they have been killing young black men all over the country. >> stephon clark has been laid to rest, but his death has sparked a movement that

continues to grow out of sacramento. and java jolt. your cup of joe could soon come with a serious health warning. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom from the headquarters in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. kentucky law enforcement officials tracked down, shot and killed a suspect in the murder of an off duty police officer. hopkinsville police officer phillip meacham was driving his own vehicle yesterday when he was pulled over by a man pretending to be an officer. it is unclear what happened next, but meacham was shot. the suspect identified as james decoursey has an extensive criminal record. he fled on foot. then allegedly stole a pickup. law enforcement found him about 25 miles away across the tennessee state line. the white house says it expected russia to retaliate after the u.s. and other countries expelled russian diplomats over the poisoning of

a russian double agent. russia is kick out 60 u.s. diplomats and closing the u.s. consulate in st. petersburg. laura podesta is here in new york with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are approaching a situation similar to the cold war. that's according to a statement made by the u.n. secretary-general last night. but the white house says the action the u.s. is taking against russia is an appropriate response. tensions with russia reach new heights as 60 americans are ordered out of the country. the exact same number of russian diplomats president trump kicked out of the u.s. on monday. the decision came in response to the poisoning of former spy sergi skripal and his daughter yulia in the english city of salisbury. authorities blame russia for the attack. >> the message being sent is you cannot use a military grade nerve agent without a response. >> reporter: part of the response is president trump's

decision to close the russian consulate in seattle. workers were seen packing up boxes and leaving thursday. in retaliation, russia said it would be shutting down the u.s. consulate in st. petersburg. white house spokesperson sarah huckabee sanders says this marks a further deterioration. russia's foreign ministry spokesperson said there was no proof russia was to blame for the march 4th attack and to compare it to misleading information, she said the west used to justify the invasion of iraq. >> nobody asked for additional materials on weapon of mass destruction. they just trust the united states and great britain and they were betrayed. >> reporter: a spokesperson at the u.s. state department said late last night russia should not be acting like a victim. britain's national security adviser says the nerve agent attack was part of a pattern of aggressive behavior by russian intelligence, going so far as to call it hybrid warfare, similar

to the downing of an airliner over eastern ukraine in 2014 and cyberattacks on american soil. anne-marie. >> laura podesta here in new york, thank you so much. president trump is at his mar-a-lago resort in florida, where he'll spend the easter holiday with his family. in ohio yesterday, mr. trump threatened to hold up the trade agreement his administration just negotiated with south korea. mr. trump said that would give him more leverage and potential talks with north korea. the president also said his plan to improve the nation's infrastructure was probably have to be postponed until after the november election. the motion to depose president trump filed by attorneys for adult film star stormy daniels has been denied. daniels, who alleges she had a sexual encounter with mr. trump, is suing so she can discuss that alleged affair. a federal judge ruled the request to question mr. trump and his attorney michael cohen and for a jury trial is

premature. daniels' attorney said he will refile the motion. the family of stephon clark say they'll announce the results of an independent autopsy. clark was shot to death by sacramento police, he was buried yesterday amid heavy security following an emotional funeral service. chris martinez reports. >> how do they say? say his name? >> stephon clark. >> reporter: mourners gathered thursday for an emotional farewell to stephon clark. >> this is not a local matter. they have been killing young black men all over the country. >> reporter: on march 18th, clark was killed by police officers looking for a vandalism suspect. the unarmed 22-year-old was shot dead in his grandmother's backyard. >> this is a systemic problem. this isn't a mistake. at some point you ask yourself if a system keeps on making these fatal mistakes, at what point is the system disqualified? >> reporter: clark's shooting is still under investigation.

it is also the subject of ongoing street demonstrations demanding the police be held accountable. >> shouldn't even be here. if they would have handled their job right and did what they supposed to do, protocol or whatever. >> reporter: more protests followed thursday's funeral. as 9:00 approached, marchers converged on downtown sacramento, again blocking streets near the city's nba arena, the golden one center, but the game between the kings and the indiana pacers went ahead as scheduled. chris martinez, cbs news. the fbi believes a suspicious package discovered at the quantico post office is linked to the same suspect that sent at least 11 other package bombs to the washington, d.c. area. the package was discovered at the post office yesterday. it is the latest to arrive at government installations in the area. thanh cong phan was arrested monday, charged with one count of shipping explosive materials. a california judge ruled

that coffee sellers in the state have to include a cancer warning with their brew. the issue is a chemical used in the roasting process that causes cancer in rodents. jim axelrod explains. >> reporter: the judge's ruling will require coffee roasters, distributors and retailers like starbucks to include on their products a label that the beverage can cause cancer. at the center of a lawsuit is a state law requiring warnings on a wide range of chemicals that can cause cancer. one of those chemicals, acrylamide, found in coffee. bill reeften teaches at university of california davis. >> that's a major reason coffee turns brown. >> reporter: the judge in los angeles today said starbucks and other coffee sellers failed to show the threat from acrylamide was insignificant. cbs news contributor dr. david agus. >> i believe in transparency, but at the same time, you put a bold declaration, x may cause cancer, when there isn't data in

stuck in the driver's side of the car as the suspect tried to get away. it happened yesterday in a cleveland suburb. the suspect was caught. the cop hurt his shoulder. a new trial has been ordered in the serial podcast case and the epa is ready to scrap more rules. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports the epa is preparing to roll back greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy rules for cars. the plan could do away with one of former president barack obama's signature efforts to fight man made climate change. the epa says it has given the white house a proposal to review. california has vowed to stick with the stricter rules, even if washington rolls back federal standards. "the san diego union tribune" reports deported veterans rights leader hector barajas is coming home. he was informed yesterday that he would be sworn in as a citizen on april 13th in san diego. the army veteran was granted

u.s. citizenship after jerry brown pardoned him for a criminal offense last year. he's a prominent advocate for deported veterans. "the los angeles times" reports a woman who accused ryan seacrest of sexual harassment filed a police report. suzie hardy is a former personal stylist for seacrest. she says she's been frustrated by the handling of her complaint, while seacrest continues to work. she says that she's not going away, her case is being investigated by the l.a. police department. seacrest has denied her claims. "the baltimore sun" says a maryland appeals court ruled the subject of the popular serial podcast should be granted a new trial. he was found guilty in 2000 of murdering his former high school sweetheart. he claimed he's innocent. in 2014, the serial podcast shed light on the case and questioned whether he received a fair trial. >> for the last year i spent every working day trying to figure out where a high school

nixon's gubernatorial bid yesterday on instagram. she called her my sister on and off screen. nixon is challenging incumbent new york governor andrew cuomo for the democratic nomination. u.s. financial markets are closed today in observance of good friday. stocks closed higher yesterday, led by a surge in tech stocks. banks and retailers also rose. the dow jones industrials gained 254 points, the s&p 500 rose 35. and the nasdaq composite finished the day 114 points higher. the sports apparel manufacturer under armour says it is the victim of a massive data breach affecting about 150 million customers. hackers broke into under armour's food and nutrition app. they stole customers' e-mail addresses and log-in information. under armour says no payment information, social security numbers or driver's license numbers were compromised. all my fitness pal users should change their passwords. the electric carmaker tesla

is recalling 123,000 model s sedans built before april 2016. the issue is the power steering. the three bolts holding the power steering motor in place can erode, possibly causing a loss of power steering. tesla says this happens in areas where salt is used to clear roads of ice and snow. no crashes or injuries have been reported though. cvs faces a federal lawsuit claiming it unintentionally revealed the hiv status of up to 6,000 ohio residents. the suit was filed last week. it claims cvs sent a letter with information about getting hiv prescriptions in the state's hiv drug assistance program. the envelope window was to include a reference code for the drug program, but instead it revealed a recipient's health status. mcdonald's is expanding its 3-year-old education benefits program. some employees will get triple the amount of money to pay for

world series mvp george springer led the game off with a home run for the astros. and in an emotional ceremony in toronto, the family of late pitcher roy halladay helped the blue jays retire his number 32. he was killed in a plane crash in november. you can catch a glimpse of the future in new york city. the international auto show opens today. carmakers are showing off some concepts that you might see in the years ahead. kenneth craig reports. >> reporter: the next generation of vehicles is on full display at new york's auto show, from a one seat urban car to a new meaning for an all terrain vehicle and a peek at what self-driving cars could look like. looking at this vehicle is like taking a step in the future. >> future, yeah. >> reporter: this toyota concept car is on office on wheels, it has windows that can be used as interactive monitors and it is equipped with autonomous technology. >> which means hands off the wheel.

our top story this morning, the white house says it is not surprised russia is expelling 60 u.s. diplomats. the move is in retaliation for the u.s. kicking out 60 russians earlier this week. it is over russia's alleged involvement in the poisoning of a former spy and his daughter with nerve gas. president trump confirmed that he phoned actress roseanne barr to congratulate her on the return of her sitcom. the show is a ratings hit and a major topic of conversation. bianna golodryga has more. >> they were unbelievable, over 18 million people. and it was about us!

i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego. it is friday. >> yeah. >> it is 4:30. and we have jaclyn and neda here with our traffic and weather. everything pretty cool right now. >> cool as a cucumber. >> it's going to heat up but not as warm as yesterday. so it was a toasty one yesterday. we broke records all across the bay area. here's a great view of the golden gate bridge at this hour. i also want to show you how beautiful this shot it from our sutro tower from the east. here are your headlines for this friday. it's looking like our temperatures will be a little bit cooler today. just by a few degrees. so it will still be warm. but also, this weekend, cooler and cloudier. so temperatures will continue to drop. but we are staying dry for a whole other week so i'll let you know when our next rain chance will be in the forecast. enjoy this above average weather in the meantime. right now, we are tracking a couple of incidents. could slow some folks down. northbound 680 this one not
