easier to see who has your data as the social media giant makes a startling admission about user privacy. and good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. i'm brook silva-braga in for anne-marie green. president trump is speaking out about an alleged affair, border security, and his embattled epa administrator. we begin with his first public comments about the $130,000 payment to adult film star daniels. daniels was paid the amount to keep quiet about the affair. the president denies the affair. he spoke out about the payment for the first time yesterday saying he didn't know anything about it.

>> daniels is seeking to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement. her attorney said the president's denial helps her case, arguing if mr. trump didn't know about the agreement, he couldn't have entered into it, so it's not valid. earlier a judge rejected the request to put the president under oath to testify because it was too early in the process. daniels' attorney said he'll try again. now to border security. the president said he plans to offer new details on the national guard securing the u.s./mexico border. hena doba is here with that. good morning. >> good morning, brook. like what exactly u.s. soldiers will be expected to do. meanwhile, mexico's president is taking issue with the plan. president trump, while aboard "air force one" yesterday, spoke to reporters clarifying his plan to send national guard troops to

the u.s./mexican border, including how many will be deployed. >> we're looking at 2,000 to 4,000, and we'll probably keep a large portion of them until such time as we get the wall. >> mexico's president fired back in a nationally televised message. he said his nation is willing to work with the u.s. on security as long as those talks are earnest and constructivconstruc. speaking directly to president trump, he added, if your statements are due to frustration due to mexico policy issues to your laws or to your congress, it is to them that you should turn, not to mexicans. we will not allow negative rhetoric to define our actions. earlier in the day chief spokesperson dana white said the troops will be deployed purely to support border patrol agents. >> the efforts will include

aviation, surveillance, communications, vehicle maintenance, and logistical support. >> the pentagon and homeland security maintain exactly how troops will be used will be primarily up to the governors of the state to which they're stationed. and border arrests this year are down nearly 13% compared to last year, but according to the department of homeland security, march saw a big spike with more than 37,000 arrests. brook. >> hena doba in new york. hena, thanks. the president also spoke about epa administrator scott pruitt. he's been under fire for days due to his ties the a lobbyist and capital for a condo. for now president trump appears to be standing behind pruitt. >> i think that scott has done a fantastic job. >> president trump praised his embattled epa administrator but asked if he was bothered by a torrent of headlines about mr.

pruitt. mr. trump left the door open saying, i'll have to look at them and make a determination. he's a good man who's done a good job, but i'll take a look at it. sources tell cbs news that last year pruitt asked to use licensed sirens to get through routine washington, d.c., traffic. his lead security agent told him it could only be done in an emergency. two weeks later that agent was reassigned. when pruitt first came to washington he rented an apartment from the wife of an energy lobbyist steven hart, paying $50 a night. according to fox news, pruitt tried to tamp down the firestorm, but senate lobbying records show pruitt's landlord represented several companies. pruitt's saving grace may be he's seen by the president and

other white house officials as mr. trump's most effective cabinet secretary. he started rolling back more than two dozen obama-era environment regulations including emissions standards and clean power plants. he also successfully pulled the president out of the paris climate accord. new york city police released vary lance video before a mentally disturbed black man was shot and killed wednesday in brooklyn. >> no justice. >> no peace. >> no justice. >> no peace. >> neighborhood residents demonstrated again last night. his family says saheed vassell was bipolar but well known by police in the neighborhood. the security video, which was edited by police, shows vassell walking down the street holding a silver object that looks like a gun, as you can see, pointing it at people. it turned out, though, to be a

pipe. following a 911 call, officers responded. police say he took a shooting stance right there, pointing the pipe at the officers. they fired ten times, killing him. in a stunning admission facebook concedes most of its over 2 billion users have probably had their personal information collected by what they call malicious actors. nikki battiste reports on that. >> reporter: sheryl sandberg says the media giant will spend years improving security. >> this is not a one-time change. it's ongoing because it's an arms race. >> reporter: they said most of its 2 billion-plus use ores have likely had their personal data accessed by outsiders. while they were quick to clarify it was public, they weren't focused on how it was used.

thunder bird crash was in his first season with the group. his jet crashed during a training flight. he was a former instructor from california. he earned his air force commission in 2007. the thunderbirds have been grounded pending an investigation. investigators in atlanta say a missing employee with the centers for disease control drowned, but they don't know if it was an accident, suicide, or something else. timothy cunningham's body was found tuesday. >> his body was found along the bank of the river, and it was found face up. it was stuck in a lot of mud as well. >> cunningham disappeared seven weeks ago. his body was found near his home. he was a trained epidemiologist. authorities have not ruled out foul play. oklahoma regulators will take out money as the teachers protest enters its fifth day. thousands rallied at the capital

reports the fbi released new photos and videos of the 2011 mass shooting that killed six people and injured 13 others including then congresswoman gabby giffords. the video shows the gunman jared loughner going into a tucson supermarket minutes before the shooting. it also shows him walking around the store. there are photos showing him being tackled to the ground by bystanders as he was getting ready to reload. the "times" reports the men anyone december brothers were reunited inside their california prison. on wednesday erik was placed into the same housing unit as his brother lyle. they're accused of killing their parents in 1989. they can now enjoy meals and exercise periods. prison officials sate's not known if they've yet done so.

on the bus. on the "cbs moneywatch," the latest in the dispute with china and "virgin galactic"'s new spaceship passes a key test. that's exciting news. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange. good morning, diane. >> good morning, brook. this morning china said it would take new measures to protect its interest if president trump follows through on his latest tariff threat and fight the u.s. at any cost. president trump wanted to impose another $50 million in new tariffs on cs on chinese goods. it follows china's plans to import taxes on $50 million of u.s. goods. he asked them to consider if the additional tariffs are appropriate and which products they should apply to. the tariff announcement came after the markets closed. this morning u.s. stocks are lower on the news. yesterday the stocks closed higher. the dow industrial rallied for 240 points. s&p 500 climbed 20 points.

the nasdaq rose 34 points. target has agreed to settle a lawsuit over its hiring practices. the lawsuit alleges that because target automatically rejects applicants with criminal backgrounds, it disproportionately keeps blacks and hispanics from being hired. as part of the deal, target will place some applicants who were rejected for jobs based on their criminal history on a hiring list. the judge needs to approve the settlement. meantime "virgin galactic" successfully ran its test. it lititz rocket motor. it's the first flight since the crash in 2014 that killed one crew member.
