the bay area battered by a powerful storm. streets flooded drivers stranded.. and the rain's not over yet. it's just about 6 o clock on this saturday, april 7th... good morning, i'm julie watts. and i'm devin fehely... new this morning -- a plane has crashed in sonoma county.. killing one person on board. the press democrat reports: the single- engine plane crashed just after 10 p-m near the petaluma airport... weather in the area at the time of the crash was rainy and windy.. it's not clear if any one else was hurt. now to our storm watch -- the heavy rain blew through over night.. you can see from our cameras of the bay bridge.. the down po watch the heavy rain blow through overnight. some parts of the bay area have flooded. hi-def doppler this morning to show you where the showers are right now. we've seen them moving into the

south bay and mark, our weather watcher reports the rain really started coming down around 4:30 or so this morning. he recorded a third of an inch today and a closer look at south bay seeing moderate to heavy showers coming down from san jose to saratoga. we got two and a half inches and that was the second rainiest day in april. more than we usually see in the entire month of april.

we are seeing flooding, north bay rivers above flood stage. remains in effect till 11:00 this morning and showers taper off and make way for warmer, drier weather for the second half of the weekend. good morning, jackie. we've seen moderate flooding in the north bay. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: to be honest, i think i got the good end of the storm coverage and took us a while to find a closed street. as you can see, they have the flooded sign out. this is a very common situation right now happening in the north bay because a lot of these streets as you were

mentioning are flooded and a lot of the worse happen last night. it got so bad that police had to put out a warning that drivers may run into flooded roads on the northern side of town. >> i saw a car, subaru or outback with a trailer that sunk. >> reporter: the water was waste high and raising. so rescuers deployed jet skis and told the couple and their dog to get on board and pulled them to safety. there's several road closures in north bay this morning

especially in several places like catati. san francisco was affected by the pineapple express storm. the traffic was worse than mor mall and a treacher -- normal and the stretch of the highway remained closed. some enjoying the large puddles. >> we're sitting at home and they'd watched enough videos for the day so before dinner we decided to come out and walk around. >> san francisco giant's game was postponed because of the weather and the start of today's game has been delayed till 3:05:00 p.m.. police investigating a fatal car crash on the stape enbankment. it was found hours after brisly peek boulevard. it's registered to a person recently reported missing but they're not saying if the

victim is that same person. >> right now we're not releasing any information -- releasing any information regarding the missing person. it's an ongoing investigation. >> workers towing the car up the heavy enbankment when a rope snapped and careened down and missed rescuers back down and took a second try to get the car down the hill. for continuing coverage of the storm, head to our website. other news, facebook admitting it's secretly been deleting messages sent by ceo mark zuckerberg. it's been going on for several years with various people's inboxes and the recipients weren't told. because of this realization, facebook will give users an un- send option. it's not the only change. facebook will start verifying advertisers who run political ads. it's an effort for repeating for the russian trolling.

health officials know where it came from. they now confirm 6 cases... 5 in santa clara county... and one in alameda county. a health officer says it all started when someone caught the disease overseas. "they had traveled to europe. and then after they got back, they developed measles. and i think it's an important reminder that measles is still out there, especially in other countries, other continents. europe, asia, africa." all of the people who got sick.. were unvaccinated. . other countries.

sinking south so south bay folks probably went to bed thinking not seeing as much as on tv and woke up to downpours and take a closer look at rain a fall in the south bay. heavy rain around 4:30. he recordrd as of about -- recorded about 5:00 this morning a third of an inch of rain and that rain gauge is probably filling up more right now. moderate to heavy rain fall through sunnyville, san jose, east into the foothills. saratoga and pal low aloe and stead -- pal lo alto and -- palo alto and the rain edge sinking south and berkeley with sinking rain and east bay folks with moderate rain fall at this hour. current conditions outside and a soggy golden gate bridge and fog out there as well and reduced visibility due to low clouds and femmetures on the --

temperatures on the mild side in the 60s to start off your saturday morning. 62 concord, 60 oakland livermore, san francisco at 62. we'll see the rain fall tapering off and that's as of the area of low pressure moves inland and our front sinks south. we'll see a little bit of residual rain fall and here we are around 6:00 a.m. and showers for san francisco south starting to see breaks up north at this point. that doesn't mean that we won't see rain gauges rise or flood gauges rise in the north bay. as we move on throughout the morning, rain tapers off throughout the day and we're going to likely see just a couple of scattered showers and that sort of soggy damp feel for the rest of the day as clouds linger and spark up showers from time to time but future cast shows about 5:00, we clear out for most of the bay area and watch what happens by sunday morning, those clouds

. >> jordan spieth began the day with a two shot lead but that was gone after the first goal. spieth double boggy and carted a two over p 4 and onto -- 74 and onto the par four. patrick reed set up a shot for an easy birdie pushing lead to two. he took the lead into the weekend. another reminder again, giants game against the dodgers pushed back from 1:05 to 3:05 today. well the ways app supposed to help drivers avoid traffic and save time. some drivers are complaining it's sending them down some of the city's steepest streets. >> steep hills are a staple of san francisco streets and local drivers quickly learn, you never know who's an the other side of the blind crests. >> it's always for a split second that gut wrenching experience because you don't know what's over the top.

>> whether or not you like it, navigation apps like ways now often detour drivers around traffic and through residential neighborhoods up and down the steep hills. >> i use ways to do detours but not prepared to go up the hills, it can be scary. >> speaking of scary, check out this hill in la. homeowners here say ways is putting people in danger by putting drivers down one of the steepest streets in the country. there's a number of dangerous accidents. >> when you get to the top you can't see the hill on the other side. >> ways uses driver data to find detours and shortcuts around traffic. ways sent drivers on a wiggle. up union, over to green, and down valeho. they have a 20-21% grade, almost as steep as lumbar. >> that's definitely a tough situation to be put in if you're just visiting or driving stick in the city.

>> novice unsuspected drivers may not realize where ways sent them till it's too late to reverse course. >> people do whatever the happen tells nem -- app tells them and it's scary sometimes. >> the app now restricts residential streets to residents only. >> we'll have to continue to monitor and explore what options are out there. >> for now, sfmta says drivers need to be mindful when relying on apps to guide them. >> especially in san francisco where we have very steel hills, might not know till it's too late. >> leads to upgrades in the app. >> maybe have a notification saying, hey, if you're going to way, may have this type of grade or whatever. >> ways wouldn't tell us if it would consider adding that feature but in a statement ways said while a driver may question the grade gradient of the hill, the city placed a

public road so it should be usable with ways. it is a public road but if i'm in my husband's car, which is a huge car, i won't use the ways detour because i'm afraid. >> sometimes i believe them blindly and it takes you downside streets and another way. >> it's something that many folks in the bay wrair rely onto -- area rely onto avoid traffic and there's some great detours but it's like buy or beware if driving the city. in the east bay, someone is throwing rent by the hour scooters into the oakland lake. they're supposed to be parked on sidewalks to be available to anyone. the company fished out a few scooters out of the lake so why would someone put them in there in the first place? >> i think bases they can. they're easy targets. >> i don't see why people would want to destroy property like that. >> it's aware of the problem and they're deploying extra workers to keep an eye on the

and i'm julie watts. we re on storm watch this morning -- high def doppler showing showers have moved into the south bay. mark - our weather watcher form santa clara reprots the rain really started coming down there around 4:30 this morning. so far his rain gague has recorded about 1/3rd of an inch... one-day rain fall totals in san francisco were nearly 2 and a half inches... that ranks as the 2nd rainest day in april... and is more rain than the we usually see in the entire month of april. the highest rainfall totals have . we're seeing more rain than in the entire mornt of april. saratoga, palo alto seeing rain and shifting to the north, there's the cutoff line and we see rain quickly taper off

north to south through the day and we have a flood watch in effect through 11:00 today and they'll likely allow this to expire. northbound santa cruz mountains where the watch is in effect and watch what happens to the rain as the front moves south, so does the rain and basically, well, it tapers off. we'll see residual post rain throughout the day and scattered showers and damp, gray feel. i think we'll also see peeks of sunshine by the time we see this afternoon and evening. a couple scattered showers lingering overnight but dry out on sunday and the second half of sunday is looking pretty sunny and nice. we continue to warm as we make our way through the weekend

the high water. she's all right. >> reporter: julie has been talking about this about how much water accumulated and some spots got 1.5 to 2-inches of rain closer to 4 to 5-inches in the mountains. that's so much rain in such a short amount of time so still street closures and flooding advisories in place, especially in places like valley and sebastian in the north bay. we're here live, jackie ward, kpix5. the storm is several areas. the yosemite valley is closed till the river crests. pg and e says several homes are without power in the bay area. more than 10,000 had no

electricity because of underground equipment failure. it was resolved a couple hours ago. for continuing coverage of the storm, go to our website cbsfs.com. > a man wanted for making threats against san francisco police has now been arrested. police say dustin hamilton was found in the city yesterday morning following a tip. he broke into his parent's san jose home wednesday night and stole their guns. hamilton is reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia and said to have a hatred of san francisco police and made threats to kill as many people as possible. reunion of sorts behind bars. the menendez brothers that killed their parents are together in prison. they're in the same correctional facility in san diego. lyle was in a different one in northern california. he got a transfer in february and this week moved into the same housing unit with his brother . the brothers used a shotgun to kill their wealthy parents in 1989. they said their parents abused

them and the initial court cases ended in mistrial but another jury in 1994 convicted them of murder. they're serving life sentences with no possibility of parole. president trump is clarifying plan to send national guard troops to the u.s. mexico border and he's specifying how many will be deployed. >> it's from 2 to 4,000 and we'll probably keep them or a large portion of them until such time as we get the wall. >> pentagon chief spokesperson dana white insisted the national guard will be deployed purely to support border patrol agents. >> it'll be aviation, engineering, surveillance, vehicle maintenance, and logistical support. >> mexico's president fired back in a nationally televised message saying his nation is willing to work with the u.s. on security as long as those talks are earnest and constructive.

concert series a year so it's definitely a hot ticket to get to and i definitely recommend going with your friends. >> the symphony isn't the only one doing this? >> there's definitely different people experimenting with classical music but the san francisco symphony is the leader in the space so it's neat to see what they're doing and what they're up to. >> why backstage? what's -- other than the cool factor of sitting backstage, anything unique about the sound? >> there is actually. this backstage area, they use for rehearsal space, even the ballet comes in and uses it. it's the same dimensions of the war memorial hall next door and put the meyer sound system in, which is incredible. the symphony plays and it can be as if they're in any type of environment. sound like it's maybe on the top of twin peeks or in a basement or in a dome or amp theater so it's really neat to see all the colors that come out from the san francisco
