good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning the strong words between u.s. and russia over an alleged chemical weapons attack in syria threatened to escalate into military action. the president's warning that u.s. air strikes will be coming appears to have caught the advisers off guard and russia on guard. teri okita is in london with more. good morning, teri. anne-marie, good morning. behind the scenes, diplomatic united nations are trying to calm the heated rhetoric. warships carrying 6,500 sailers are on their way to the middle

east for a previously planned deployment. it's unclear what their mission will be, but there's tension. >> we're ready, any time, anywhere. we're trained. >> russia is also moving into position to protect its assets in syria from a possible u.s. retaliatory strike. russia is a key ally of syria and warned that any u.s. missiles fought at syria will be shot down and america's launch sites targeted. president trump responded with a fiery tweet that rush should get ready for nice and new and smart missiles. in syria's capital, they're anticipating a possible strike. this damascus resident says the current u.s. administration and its president are unbalanced. he may make a decision that we must take seriously and be prepared for. reports say britain's prime minister is likely to give the go-ahead to join the u.s. and france in a military response. the u.n. security council is holding a special meeting today to discuss how to keep the

situation from spiraling out of control. the world health organization says 43 people have now died from saturday's apparent attack and more than 500 have been treated. anne-marie? >> teri okita in london. thank you so much, teri. we're learning more about the fbi raid on the office of mr. trump's personal attorney. the warrant mentioned president trump by name. john schiumo is here in new york. john, good morning. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. this investigation is being run by the fbi's public corruption unit and it appears there's interest in the attorney and his client. president trump's personal toernl attorney michael cohen made a brief comment to cbs news wednesday following fbi raids on his home and aufgs earlier this week. >> mr. cohen, you say you're not worried at all. >> i'm not worried.

>> reporter: the documents mention president trump's name several times. sources who see the warrant say it appears to them the real target of the raids was president trump. one source called it a search and destroy mission. >> mr. trump, how are you? >> cbs news confirms the search warrant allowed authorities to look for records concerning the release of the 2005 "hollywood access" tape in which mr. trump was heard making vulgar comments about women. fbi agents were also looking for information on money paid to two women who claim they had an fair with mr. trump before he was president. early yesterday the president added to speculation he may try to fire special counsel robert mueller and deputy attorney general rod rosenstein, tweeting in part, much of the bad blood with russia is caused by the fake and corrupt russia investigation. >> the president certainly has been clear that he has a very deep concern about the direction that the special counsel and other investigations have taken. >> a group of bipartisan senators introduced a bill wednesday that would protect the special counsel if the president

moves to fire him. now, the future of that bill is unclear. several top-ranking republicans said yesterday it wasn't even worthy of a vote. anne-marie? >> john schiumo here in new york. thank you so much, john. the stunning announcement from speaker of the house paul ryan that he would not seek re-election has set off a scramble for party leadership, and it raises more concern for republicans trying to hold off democratic efforts to retake the house. nancy cordes reports on ryan's reasons for calling it quits. >> paul ryan will walk away from the most powerful job on capitol hill after just three years. >> i will be setting new priorities in my life. >> he gave three reasons for his departure. they are 16, 14, and 13, and they're in wisconsin, all of them born since he came to congress in 1999. >> my dad died when i was 16. the age my daughter is. and i just don't want to be one of those people looking back on my life thinking i spent more
