one. this is the "cbs weekend news." >> quijano: good evening, i'm elaine quijano. she is the wife of 41st president and mother of the 43rd president. tonight barbara bush is said to be in failing health. a family spokesman says: the former first lady is now focused on comfort care. david begnaud is in dallas with the latest details. >> reporter: the former first lady has recently been in and et of the hospital battling undisclosed illnesses. barbara bush is only the second woman to be both a wife and a mother to a president of the united states. , r husband, the 41st president george herbert walker bush has also been battling health problems in recent years. in her role as first lady, mrs.

bush championed literacy. >> i honestly believe that if more people could read, write and comprehend, we would be that cch closer to solving so many of the problems that plague our nation. >> reporter: her son, george w. bush, became the 43rd president. by the 2012 campaign, she spoke of the lack of civility and political debate. >> i just hate it. i hate the fact that people think compromise is a dirty word. it is not a dirty word. >> reporter: in 2016 she was k ck on the trail, as another son, jeb bush, sought the republican nomination. now her family is lending its support. in a statement from her husband's office: she is surrounded by a family she adores. and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the .rayers she is receiving. >> reporter: back in 2017, mrs. bush was hospitalized for bronchitis. she and her husband, the former usesident, did not attend the inauguration of donald trump and they both cited health concerns

for being the reason for not going. elaine, tonight mrs. bush is at home in houston and we're told she is surrounded not only by family but her husband of 73 years. >> quijano: david, thanks. president trump is defending his use of the famous phrase "mission accomplished" to onplaud friday night's missile strikes on syria. the u.s., britain and france ndrgeted the assad regime chemical weapons program. it was in response to a scripted chlorine and sarin attack on syria last weekend. on "face the nation" u.n. ambassador nikki hailey said the hes. will announce new sanctions tomorrow for protecting assad. david. >> reporter: the attack on syria's chemical weapons facilities including cruise missiles launched from a u.s. submarine in the mediterranean. a total of 105 missiles were fired from ships and aircraft feom three different directions. all of them got through and the aftermath whether seen from ground level or from space

seemed to confirm the claim made by u.n. ambassador nikki haley on "face the nation." >> we sent their chemical weapons program back years. >> reporter: the president tweeted "mission accomplished" echoing an infamous slogan from 2003 which prematurely declared success in the iraq war. in fact, the friday night strike did nothing to accomplish the president's other goals in syria as defined by white house press secretary sarah sanders. appearing on abc. >> he has talked about this relentlessly. we are almost there. we have made extraordinary gains against isis. >> reporter: it's true there are only small pockets of isis still holding out in syria, but that is in the euphrates river valley, far removed from where the cruise missiles fell. and the one shot strike as secretary mattis called it may actually have set back chances of achieving the president's other goals in syria. >> we have to contain iran. we have to make sure that the bad acting that they have been a

part of doesn't continue and doesn't grow. ow reporter: iran's president rouhani called russia's president putin today and, according to the russians, the two leaders agreed the strike td seriously damaged prospects for a political settlement to syria's civil war. the u.s. military has demonstrated over and over its ability to launch strikes that rostroy their targets. but strikes alone almost never accomplish the mission. elaine? >> quijano: david, thank you. our seth doane was in the syrian capital friday night when the missiles struck. on saturday, he checked out the smoldering rubble of the suspected chemical weapons facility in damascus. lonight he has this report from inside syria. ( cheers ) >> reporter: douma which had been in rebel hands is now controlled by syrian forces. that could make it easier for chemical weapons inspectors who arrived in damascus saturday to get to the site of the purported april 7th chemical attack. those inspectors were set to odgin work today.

syria's deputy foreign minister told us they were eager to help get inspectors to the site, though the government still claims the attack never happened. today on state tv president bashar al-assad appeared as confident as ever, holding meetings with russian lawmakers. he said $400 billion would be needed to restore syria's economy. and called the coalition missile strikes "an act of aggression." ioat's a sentiment we heard echoed on the streets. thnce the air strikes, syrians in government controlled damascus have been defiant. "they have been attacking and conspiring against syria for sght years," this student said. "but syria is strong." in rebel-held parts of the country, they've argued the air strikes did not go far enough because assad is still in power. his forces have been making steady gains, knocking out opposition fighters wherever tiey can. like in the city of homs, north of the capital, where the "white helmets" released video of victims of artillery shelling on rebel positions. the syrian government tells us the next crucial battle here in the capitol will be against isis which still controls a pocket of this city. elaine? uijano: th doane in damascus, thanks. president trump on twitter today suggested fired f.b.i. director james comey should be sent to jail. it's a pre-emptive strike against comey's harsh assessment of the president in his new book. mola lenghi is at the white house. >> reporter: president trump continued his twitter attack on former f.b.i. director james comey sunday ahead of the release of comey's explosive new memoir or as the president described it, "comey's badly reviewed book." according to president trump, "slippery james comey will go down as the worst f.b.i. directer in history. .y far." comey will launch a media blitz with the book release this week

in it comey explains his iscision to reveal just before the 2016 election that the f.b.i. had reopened the probe into the hillary clinton email scandal. >> i was operating in a world where hillary clinton was going to beat donald trump. and so i'm sure that it was a factor, like i said, i don't remember spelling it out but it had to have been. that she is going to be elected heesident. and if i hide this from the american people, she will be illegitimate the moment she is elected. the moment this comes out. nt jim comey, in my way of thinking, is a good man who made a very consequential blunder. d> reporter: senator tim kaine was clinton's running mate. >> the f.b.i. has clear rules, don't talk about an impending investigation and don't inject controversy before an election. they didn't follow the rules beth respect to hillary clinton. >> reporter: meanwhile the president is still fuming about evidence seized from his attorney during an f.b.i. raid tweeting "attorney client privilege is now a thing of the past," but the white house ousists president trump remains cool.

nt what the president is very confident is the fact that he has done nothing wrong, and he can't speak on behalf of anyone else but he is very confident in what he has and hasn't done. >> reporter: a federal judge has requested that michael cohen rppear for a court hearing in new york tomorrow. this morning adult film star stormy daniel's attorney said daniels will also attend. of course you remember daniels was paid $130,000 by cohen. she claims "hush money" to keep a 2006 sexual encounter with mr. trump quiet. as daniel's attorney put it, monday could prove very interesting. elaine? >> quijano: mola, thank you. >> there are reports tonight that a tornado touched down near greensboro, north carolina, video posted on social media shows damaged homes and fallen trees. there are reports that a number of people were trapped in their homes. meanwhile, a spring blizzard buried the upper midwest this weekend, some areas got more than a foot of snow.

in in pipe stone, you a a snow it's the largest egg recall in eight years. rose acre farms is recalling more than 206 million eggs because they could be contaminated with salmonella. at least 22 people have gotten sick. the eggs were sold in the nine states highlighted on this map. health officials say the affected cartons are marked with the plant number p-1065. protesters swarmed a starbucks in philadelphia sunday following a controversial arrest of two black men. meg oliver has more on this. >> black, brown, indigenous folks! >> reporter: dozens of protesters showed up to this philadelphia starbucks sunday after two black men were arrested inside late last week. camille hymes is starbucks vice president of operations. >> we know that we have work to or. we have worked very closely with the community here in philadelphia. it literally breaks my heart.

the men's attorney lauren wimmer would not identify them. she says they what waiting for this man, andrew yaffe, to arrive for a business meeting. >> what did they get called for, because they were two black guys sitting there? >> reporter: wimmer says the men were in starbucks for less than 15 minutes. >> they were doing what people do every single day, having a meeting, and were undoubtedly singled out because of their race. us reporter: during that time police say the men attempted to use the restroom without buying anything, which is against starbucks policy. when an employee asked them to leave, they refused and she called 911. >> when they were arrested they were taken out essentially without incident. there was no harm done to them. >> reporter: philadelphia police commissioner richard ross went on facebook live insisting his officers did nothing wrong. n and three different occasions the officers asked the males politely to leave the location because they were being asked to leave by employees because they were trespassing. instead, the males continued to refuse. >> reporter: starbucks c.e.o. kevin johnson released this

aldean is among the performers. he was on the las vegas stage last october when a gunman killed 58 people and wounded more than 500 others. vladimir duthiers talked to aldean about this emotional night. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: jason aldean, the academy of country music's reigning entertainer of the year, is back in las vegas this weekend, hoping to take home the honor for the third straight year. what's it like for you to be back here? >> for me, i've got a million great memories in vegas, you know, and one horrible one. ( gun shots ) >> reporter: it's been just over six months since aldean's performance at a music festival was tragically cut short when a gunman opened fire on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. >> well, i love this town. i love las vegas, i love this city-- was looking forward to coming back out here. >> reporter: the shooting last october was the country's deadliest mass shooting. 58 people were killed and hundreds injured. aldean invited some of those

survivors to watch his rehearsal friday afternoon. what were you thinking about as you were performing for them? >> i just think, you know, everybody that was there, we're all kind of forever bonded bocause people don't get it unless they were actually there. and so i think it's therapeutic t'r everybody to sort of talk evout it a little bit. li ♪ >> reporter: the healing process began less than a week after the shooting when aldean performed the tom petty song, "i won't tyck down," on saturday night live. f i felt like that was sort of a-- not only a healing moment for me, but also a chance for me to sort of tell everybody else, s hoknow, this is horrible but it's okay to start the healing progress and start to pick up the pieces and move on. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> reporter: over the past 13 years, jason aldean has become one of country music's biggest stars selling more than 10 million albums. his 8th, "rearview town" was released on friday. that album was recorded before the horrific events here but the title track is really interesting.
