oakland, where streets are covered in white. >> reporter: it was not your typical april shower. in fact, it looked like a winter storm that would happen somewhere near lake tahoe, and this white stuff is why. the wonder of it all, and the slipperiness made it a tough start. >> it sounded like heavy rain, and when i looked at it, it was hail. >> reporter: leslie moved to the oakland area from boston, she said seeing the winter wonderland was not what she was expecting to wake up to. >> one little tiny dusting of hail about 8 years ago, but this is the most amazing since then. >> reporter: from chopper 5, you get a sense how the hail blanked the area. roof tops, cars and streets were covered with a slick icy layer. that made getting to school difficult, and sometimes dangerous. >> everybody was trying to get to school, which made it crazy up here. traffic was backed up, people

were spinning out. there were emergency vehicles everywhere, so we just stayed in the house until it cleared up. >> reporter: skyline high school had to start late because of all the traffic problems. >> school is going on not quite as scheduled. we're doing a reverse minimum day. starting a little late today, but some kids have decided to head home. >> reporter: public works is warning drivers to look for slippery parts on this stretch of skyline boulevard, even as the hail continues to melt. >> reporter: missile is expected to go smoother because a lot of this hail has already melted away. however, more hail might be on the way so i'm sure we'll have details very soon. oakland wasn't the own place getting slammed with hail. check this out! so much ham was falling in alameda, it looked like snow -- hail was falling in alameda it,

looked like snow. and the view was the same. outside the alameda police department, the hail blanketing the parking lot, and that brave policeman -- standing out in it. >> check out this video of the hail in mill valley. you can see it piling up on the patio as the person behind the camera was smart and stayed inside. in mountain view, see the ice bouncing off the windshield of one of our news van, and from hail to snow, chopper 5 was over mount hamilton. in other places, rain is the big weather story. in san francisco, windshield wipers getting a workout touring the morning commute as people went to work. those walking to work crowded the sidewalk with all of their umbrellas, and you can see some joggers dodging the elements. the rain is being blamed for a major crash during the peek of the morning commute. the four-car pipeup blocked all

lines of eastbound i-80 for an hour. chp cleared the scene by 730. nobody was seriously hurt. and a look at what to expect for the rest of the day. >> we are still going to see the chance of thunderstorms, hail, snow, all possible. it's happening in many areas. this is a view at the lake observatory, at the top of mount hamilton. snow in the bay area in april is extremely rare. in fact, we're digging into the record books. it's coming down still in the diablo range. show is on hi-def doppler. this is along i 30 east of milpitas. there are the dark storm clouds, and many giving way to rain. we had a little break, but it's picking up again along 680 through dublin and pleasanton,

livermore, hayward, and you can see this picking up near martinez. so showers are pretty heavy in a lot of areas. it's picking up through mill valley, and daley city. and richmond heading to the bridge. and north bay, north of calistoga in the hills, that is snow coming down through wine country. so, did you feel it? an earthquake rattled the south bay this morning. the magnitude 3.8 struck along the calaveras fault near east san jose. marie is live where the neighbors felt some shaking there! >> reporter: yeah, what a way to start your monday morning if you were here in san jose, with the storm and then the earthquake. i'm standing at the epi centering of the quake -- epicenter of the quake. we had lots of small clusters of quakes in recent months. we've had 2s, and 3-something

magnitude quakes, but this was the strongest one i felt. it was a back and forth jolt that lasted a couple seconds, but it was pretty strong, and people from as far as san francisco felt it. and what happens when you feel an earthquake? you go to social media. we will read a couple tweets. one, the first one says wow, that earthquake felt way more than 3.9 in the san jose office. the whole building was shaking. san jose has had thunder lightning, rain, hail, and an earthquake all before 10:00 a.m. happy monday. didn't realize until my work desk shook for 10 seconds, just felt the earthquake in san jose. and people felt it all over the bay area. we spoke to one woman in mountain view. >> what did it feel like to you? >> my bed shook, i was laying in the bed and it shook, and i could feel the lights move, so i knew what it was. and then i heard the thunder to

go with it. >> reporter: hundred, and rain? and what -- thunder and rain? and what did you tell your husband in the other room. >> earthquake! yelling earthquake! >> reporter: for a lot of us, we wonder, does this mean the big one is coming? usgs experts say small clusters of quakes are normal. they happen all the time, but there is a 72% chance that we will get the, bay area will get a 6.7 or greater quake here within the next 30 years, but today, the good news is that there are no reports of injuries or damage so far. back to you guys. >> all right. thank you. san francisco police looking for the driver who crashed into a home this morning and took off running. check out the video. the driver left behind a passenger actually. that person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the crash happened just after 2:00 a.m. this is 37th avenue near yorba

street. police have not said whether anybody was in the home at the time of the crash. and it looks like there was damage there done to the home next door. a heart breaking update on the search for a missing southern california family. they have located the vehicle belonging to the thottapilly family santa clarita. it was found you be merged in the eel river. the searchers recovered the bodies of the father and daughter. the body recovered from the river on friday has been identified as that of the mother. investigators are still searching for the 12-year-old son. the trump administration is firing back after former fbi director james comey sat down with abc news for a tell-all interview about the events that led to him being fired. weijia jiang has more on that interview. >> did you watch james comey's interview.

>> reporter: president trump ignored reporters asking him to respond to james comey. he said he former deputy attorney general andrew mccabe and others committed many crimes. >> i knew this was a no-win situation. >> reporter: comey gave a tell- all interview with george stephanopoulos sunday night where he called the president morally unfit to lead. and he said he believes the president tried to push him to drop the fbi investigation into former national security advisor, mike flynn. >> this president says he didn't say that. >> yeah. uh-huh. what am i going to do? he did? >> what president trump obstructing justice? it's possible. >> reporter: and comey said it's possible the russians have compromising materials on president trump. white house has pushed back against comey, saying he's a disgrunt telled ex-employee who is telling lies. >> he purposely leaked

information to a friend so it would get into the media. >> reporter: the white house says comey is only interested in selling books. weijia jiang, cbs news. president trump's personal attorney is appearing in federal court today to argue over evidence found during a recent fbi raid. agents searched michael cohen's office, apartment, hotel room and safety deposit box a week ago. he is under criminal investigation for personal business dealings. cohen has denied any wrongdoing. stormy daniels is in court. she is the adult film star who said she had an affair with president trump. new at noon, california legislature has just rejected a plan to send hundreds of national guard troops to the border. governor brown sent 400 guard -- said 400 would go there, not to follow president trump's wishes for immigration enforcement, but to work on fighting against transnational crime. now, that plan has reportedly been rejected because work is considered too close to the

out a new policy. bikes board first. it's an evident to speed up the boarding -- effort to speed up the boarding process for those bike riders that need some extra space. >> it's rough with other passengers, because they will cut you off to get on first. >> reporter: they say 66% of delays are due to passenger issues, including bike boarding. the process can jam up so much, cyclists are often left waiting for the next train during the morning commute. >> as we get closer to 8:00, it get really, really busy, and especially with it get light and weather being nice, yeah, it's not terribly uncommon for the cyclists to get bumped. >> reporter: we caught riders cutting off the bikes. >> hold on, guys. let the bikes go on first. >> reporter: the pilot program runs on northbound platforms from 7:00 a.m. the staff will be on the platforms to help those with

see downpours, thunderstorms, hail, all of that still possible through the afternoon hours through about 6, 7:00. so here's what's going on. this is the past three hour loop. you can see pretty heavy lines of downpours, so when we saw that hail going through alameda, oakland, that showed up here in the form of dark, dark red on doppler so really significant amount of rain came really fast, also cold enough and unstable enough to bring that hail, and you could see that snow piling along the mount hamilton range, mount diablo getting snow, and same with mount tam. so right here, i would not be surprised that there is hail in this cell, and we're noticing some heavy downpours through the area. martinez is lightening up, but -- west of you, it's picking up a lot of this moving from the coast towards downtown san francisco, so you'll notice

heavier showers activity. don't want to go for a walk now because it's going to pick up. richmond seeing decent rainfall, and petaluma and sonoma, this has been seeing a lot of rainfall, and further up north, cob, calistoga, the hills along highway 29, they saw some snow flurries there, too. here is a live look at san jose, these clouds have done impressive things. dark storm clouds. your headlines include thunderstorms, hail and strong gusts. snow as low as 3000 feet, and below average temperatures. temperatures now cool in the 40s, and 50s, and afternoon highs are not going to get much warmer. this is a view of berkeley, where you can see the storm clouds, and look at the winds, same winds -- hayward, 11, oakland 10, berkeley 11, gusts are at 30, 35 miles per hour. so the futurecast showing continued shower activity through 2:00, we'll see what
