give up. and robots are improving by leaps and bounds. how they'll be able to help humans in the near future with every step. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. after more than three decades, law enforcement officials think they've nabbed a sadistic california killer, the suspect, one of their own. suspect joseph d'angelo, now 72 years old, was arrested as he left his home. he's the so-called golden state killer responsible for more than 12 murders and more than 40 murderers between 1976 and 1986. good morning. >> good morning. deangelo was once sworn to protect the public. he's now accused of living a double life, becoming one of

california's most feared serial killers and rapists. >> the magnitude of this case demanded that it be solved. >> on wednesday police and prosecutors gathered in sacramento to announce the capture of the man they believed to be the infamous criminal known as the golden state killer. >> my detectives arrested james joseph deangelo, 72 years old, living in citrus heights. >> the suspect, a former police officer, was arrested at home on tuesday and booked on eight counts of murder. investigators suspect deangelo in dozens of other crimes dating back to the 1970s. >> the answer was and always was going to be in the dna. >> officials said the arrest was the result of old-fashioned detective work mixed with modern science. >> we started with science and we were able to get some

discarded dna, and we were able to confirm what we thought we already knew, that we had our man. >> the initial break in the case came just a week ago. >> we all knew as part of this team that we were looking for a needle in the haystack, but we also all knew the needle was there. >> some victims had waited decades to hear the news. >> it's putting this to bed, getting closure. i always thought he would be caught. i always believed he was alive. >> deangelo is scheduled to be arraigned in sacramento on friday. and comedian patton oswalt's late wife michelle mcnamara wrote her book "i'll be gone in february." he addressed her in a message, you did it. >> thank you, hena. the white house says its nominee for v.a. secretary might with draw. dr. ronny jackson met with top administration press aides last night as more allegations concerning his behavior emerge.

the allegations are cited in a summary released by veterans on the democratic veteran affairs committee. >> we're seeing a pattern here. >> the top democrat said his office had received complaints about dr. ronny jackson from 23 current and former colleagues. >> we've got military people that came to me and said we've got a problem here, and we have to follow up on that as the senate. >> the allegations are outlined in a two-page document. they include jackson creating a hostile work environment, accusations of excessive drinking, including one instance where he wrecked a government vehicle. jackson directly denied that. and improperly releasing prescriptions. democrats said that earned him the nickname "candyman."

>> it was absolutely unfair. >> dr. jackson's record as a white house physician has been impeccable. >> white house officials strongly defended dr. jackson. >> he's worked within arm's reach of three presidents he's received more vetting than most nominees. >> i'm looking forward to getting back on track. >> jackson has been equally defiant. he told president trump he wants the opportunity to defend himself in a confirmation hearing. republican committee chairman johnny isakson promised just that. >> so i'm going to make sure we have an open fair hearing for the american people. >> but republicans are divided over how to proceed. when i asked one senior republican senator earlier what's the level of patience among all of his colleagues with all this drama, he said it's, quote, very thin. ed o'keefe, cbs news, capitol hill. well, president trump's personal attorney michael cohen will invoke his fifth amendment in self-incrimination regarding

the case with daniels. cohen said he paid daniels $130,000 to keep quiet, but now she's sueing to invalidate that agreement. the fbi raided cohen's home and office earlier this month seeking records on the nondisclosure agreement. daniels' lawyer calls cohen's decision to invoke the fifth a stunning development. a decision isn't expected until jurngs but it appears the supreme court is ready to uphold president trump's travel ban. the justices heard arguments yesterday. lower courts had struck down versions which bans travelers from five mostly muslim countries as well as north korea and venezuela. members of the court's conservative group says they do not target muslims. >> it does not look at all like a muslim ban. there are other justifications that jump out as to why these particular countries were put on the list. >> the administration argues the president has broad powers over immigration and national

security. opponents say the ban violates the constitution's prohibition against religious bias. french president emmanuel macron returned to his country after a three-day stay in this country. he laid out a far different world perspective in a blunt speech to congress yesterday. macron made it clear france would not pull out of the iran nuclear accord and rejected mr. trump's america first policy. >> the united states is the one who invented this. you are the one now who has to preserve and reinvent it. >> he also spelled out differences with the president on climate change and trade. tomorrow morning if all goes as planned, north korean leader kim jong-un will walk across the border into south korea. he'll be meeting south korean

president moon jae-in for the first inter-korean summit in more than a decade. topping the agenda is the north's nuclear program. kim says he's willing to stop testing nuclear weapons, but this may be a reason. a study by nuclear geologists say a mountain near the test site has collapsed. it's triggered earthquakes according to the chinese making area unsafe for further testing. teachers in arizona are expected to strike today, sending parents scrambling for child care. up to 50,000 teachers and their supporters are expected to march through downtown phoenix. demanding increased education funding. governor doug doocy has proposed a 20% pay raise by 2020. organizers are pushing for $1 billion in new education funding. former president george h.w. bush has been moved out of intensive care as he recovers from an infection. mr. bush was admitted to houston methodist hospital sunday, the day after his wife's funeral.

both men were taken to the hospital and released. there are new details about a secret nfl meeting, and the cosby trial is in the hands of the jury. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the philadelphia "enquirer" reports on the first day of jury deliberations in the sexual assault retrial of bill cosby. jurors deliberated for ten hours yesterday and will resume this morning. they asked the judge several questions including what the legal definition of consent is. cosby is on trial for allegedly drugging and molesting a woman in 2004. his first trial ended with a hung jury. "the new york times" reports on a confidential nfl meeting to discuss "national anthem" protests. the audio reveals times of meetings between league owners, players, and executives. it came amid controversy over anthem protests and president trump's criticism of the players and league. during the meeting the players wanted to talk about why colin

kaepernick was being blackballed by owners. the owners were more focused on damage control. the "washington post" reports hud secretary ben carson is proposing raising the lowe housing income. the plan would increase the rent paid by public housing residents to 35% of household income up from 30%. it would also make it easier for housing authorities to impose work requirements. elderly and disabled tenants would be exempt. the plan has to be approved by congress. the "atlanta journal-constitution" reports a passenger with multiple sclerosis reports employees tied the woman to her wheelchair. when she arrived earlier this month, delta didn't have the proper straps to help her sit up. her son says employees tied her to a regular wheelchair with a dirty blanket. he said it caused bruises and left his mother crying. delta says it regretd regretds

a five-day losing streak. the s&p 500 gained 4 points while nasdaq lost 3 points. so much for delete facebook as the mishandling of information didn't hurt the company last quarter. the world's largest network posted a 63% rise in profit. monthly users reached 2.2 million. daily active users rose too. keep in mind in march facebook used a consulting firm that collected data from millions of users. meanwhile g-mail has a new feature. the feature lets g-mail users stop recipients from forwarding e-mails and will require a passcode to open e-mails. it's the first redesign since 2013. and youtube is overhauling its kids focus app. the update gives parents the option of letting humans and noncomputer algorithms decide what show their children can watch.

a witness captured this video of a dark colored jeep cher key driving erratically striking a vehicle and driving away. while there's no research, it shows an alarming trend. hit-and-run crashes led to 2,049 deaths in 2016, the highest number reported, and a 60% increase in 2009. most of the victims were walking or riding a bicycle. >> it's an eye-opening case study. hopefully it's enough to open our eyes and have us be a little more alert on the road and pay attention to the bicyclists and pedestrians. >> reporter: dr. green-samuel launched "stop hit-and-runs. she said paying attention while driving is key. >> if the accident never occurred, then you wouldn't have to deal with someone leaving the scene of the accident. >> reporter: and she'd like to see drivers sign a pledge when they get a license or buy a car,
