slavery being a choice. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the russia investigation and word that special counsel robert mueller raised the possibility of issuing grand jury subpoena for president trump and the man overseeing it is being threatened with impeachment. hena doba is here in new york with more. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. mueller has floated the idea of subpoenaing president trump. the president's lawyer says they have advised if they will sit with mueller's team. president trump's former attorney john dowd says special counsel robert mueller may try to force the president trump to testify under oath. he's been in touch with the counsel's office about a possible sit-down interview with

the president. last night dowd said mueller's team raised the idea of a subpoena in early march. in the tweet the president called it disgraceful, but secretary sarah sanders refused to comment. later it was said outsiders won't be allowed to influence the investigation. deputy attorney general rod rosenstein spoke after some congressional republicans drafted articles of iimchmp meet >> i think they should understand by now the department of justice is not going to be extorted. >> even if a grand jury subpoena were issued, president trump could refuse to answer questions by invoking his fifth amendment rights against self-incrimination.

it's not immediately clear in what context it was raised or how serious mueller was about it. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. now to the ethics investigations of the environmental protection agency. the two top officials in charge of security and toxic waste cleanups resigned. yesterday scott pruitt blamed his staff for alleged ethics violations including excessive spending. and it's reported that prutd's trip to morocco was partly arranged by one of his long-time friends, a lobbyist richard smotkin. he allegedly received $40,000 from the moroccan government. that's according to the "washington post." the white house said there was nothing wrong with a former staffer taking possession of president trump's medical records. the president's former doctor harold bornstein told cbs news some men created a lot of chaos in his office last year when they collected the president's medical records.

they say it felt like a raid. they say it's standard operating procedure to take possession of the records. now to that severe weather threatening the plains and other parts of the midwest this morning. tornado, damaged winds, and hail are possible through tonight. yesterday there were reports of at least 21 tornadoes in nebraska, oklahoma, and kansas. tornado watches and warnings continue to be posted there. this twister was spotted in te skies over oklahoma yesterday evening. there were no reports of injury or damage, but last night in central kansas the severe weather damaged buildings. one family rode out the storm in their basement. >> we have a basement window so i could see debris go by and tree limbs and tin and stuff, so i thought, yeah, something happened. >> recovery efforts are now under way. it's unclear how many buildings were damaged, but there were no reports of injury. ahead on "cbs this morning," mark strassmann flies with tornado hunters as they search for clues about how they form. so far 28 central american

migrants who trekked across mexico seeking asylum in the u.s. are being processed at a border station near san diego. they arrived at the border in a much publicized caravan over the weekend. president trump promised to turn them away. more than 100 others are waiting on the mexican side of the border. in arizona now, firefighters hope the wet cold weather forecast for today will help them battle a fast-moving wildfire. officials say an illegal camp fire is to blame for igniting the tinder fire friday morning. more than 11,000 acres in north central arizona have burned. the fire is zero percent contained. a number of buildings and homes have been destroyed. hundreds have been forced to evacuate, but so far there are no reports of any injuries. well, facebook is getting into the dating business. ceo mark zuckerberg said the new feature is not just for hookups but to develop meaningful relationships.

he announced the new service at a developer's conference yesterday. lexy savvides reports. >> this has been an intense year. >> reporter: during his address at facebook's developers conference, ceo mark zuckerberg tackled the scandals head on. >> we're hard at work. >> reporter: zuckerberg reassured facebook users that their data was safe at cambridge analytica misused the data of more than 87 million users. >> we have to make sure this never happens again. we're taking a number of steps. we're putting a tool in front of them that shows them all the apps they are using and lets them remove access to ones they don't want to use. >> reporter: facebook is also developing artificial intelligence tools to detect interference and fake accounts.

a paroled sex offender driving a motor home led police on a 100-mile chase in southern california yesterday. when the rv got stuck, police say the man fled, leaving his 3-year-old son and 11-month-old daughter inside. the chase started when the police tried to arrest him on child abduction and weapons charges. the rv was found hours later in bakers field with the kids inside. police are still searching for the suspect. kanye west makes controversial comments on daca and new efforts to sway. the "austin american-statesman" reports texas and six other states are suing the federal government to end the obama-era

daca program. it protects children brought here as children. the trump administration has tried to end daca but it's been blocked. the lawsuit claims president obama exceeded his authority when he enacted daca in 2012. alabama, arkansas, louisiana, nebraska, south carolina, and west virginia joined texas in the lawsuit. virginia's "daily progress" reports on the guilty verdict of a beating of a black man in a parking garage during a white national list on. jacob goodwin was arrest and convicted in the attack on deandre harris. harris suffered a spinal injury, a broken arm and head lacerations.

the fed is expected to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged. here on wall street stocks kicked off in may with the old adage, sell in may ending in an ultimate mix. in the end the dow closed down 64 points. the s&p 500 gained 6 points. nasdaq added 64 points. analysts were worried because of the hefty price of the iphone x. it fielded profit of $13.8 billion. apple also surprised investors, announcing a $100 billion stock buyback. meantime united airlines plans to resume shipping pets in july. united will only accept dogs and cats, but some breeds like snub-nosed dogs facing bigger health risks will be banned. united stopped shipping pets in march after several dogs were put on the wrong flights and after a flight attendant told a passenger to put a pet in an overhead bin.
