this is what caused concern on a southwest plane earlier today, a visibly cracked window. flight 957 was scheduled to travel from chicago to new jersey but once the crack was reported by a passenger, the pilots had to make an impromptu decision for safety reasons and landed in cleveland. the plane never lost cabin pressure, and the pilots did not declare an emergency before landing. just two weeks ago a southwest plane had to make an emergency landing in philadelphia after an engine exploded, blowing out a window and killing a passenger. she was the first passenger death on the u.s. airline since 2009. today southwest says the rest of the plane with the cracked window did not have any other mechanical issues. it has been taken out of service. no one was injured because of this window. the faa is investigating what caused it to crack. in the newsroom, jackie ward, kpix 5. new at noon, at least five people are dead after a

military cargo plane crashed near an airport in savannah, georgia. laura podesta reports. >> reporter: firefighters tweeted this photo showing the tail end of a c-130 hercules cargo plane. the rest of the aircraft is crushed and on fire surrounded by a thick plume of smoke. the air force confirmed the international guard plane was on a training mission from puerto rico. the aircraft went down in an intersection near the savannah hilton head airport shutting down power and phone service in the area. >> as far as we know, there were no cars involved in the crash. >> reporter: a driver on a nearby road saw the plane plummet to the ground. >> watching the c-130 coming in for a landing. as it came to the open set of trees there i saw it do a roll upside-down. then it did a complete -- straight turn into the ground. >> reporter: firefighters swarmed the area until federal investigators arrived on the scene. >> we have been asked by the fbi to back up a little bit. the, um, scene is kind of

being controlled because it was a military aircraft. >> reporter: hours after the crash, crews were still collecting debris and spraying flame retardant on hot spots. while the investigation began into why this plane went down, they continued to spray hot spots. laura podesta, cbs news, new york. new at noon it was once one of the main sites for protests in the bay area. kpix 5's anne makovec looks at a new proposal for people's park in berkeley. >> reporter: people's park here in berkeley is known as a haven for the homeless. 2.8 open acres off telegraph avenue, there is a new plan for this area that could turn it into homes for 800 people. with a history rooted in vietnam war activism, this park has been the scene of many a strange trip and a place some call home. >> people from all over the country, even out of the country. >> reporter: it's been the source of plenty of complaints. >> it's not lit properly. there are a lot of crimes

around here. i don't think the residents are safe, either. >> reporter: now this land could have a new future as housing for up to 700 uc- berkeley students and 100 apartments for the homeless. >> i think that it could be changed because a lot of homeless people live in the area and i think building housing would definitely help. >> reporter: uc-berkeley acquired this land in 1967 but activists declared it a park two years later and it's been one ever since. >> i have had friends who are homeless and they are, like, i don't want to stay there of all places at people's park because they feel unsafe. >> reporter: last year, uc hired a social worker to begin talking with the people who hang out here, a possible precursor to the housing plan. >> they want the city to -- >> reporter: a uc spokesman wouldn't confirm any plans for this park. but he says they could have an announcement by the end of the month. in berkeley, anne makevoc,

kpix 5. students across the country walked out of their classrooms again this morning to show support of the second amendment. this was the view from chopper 5 at california high school in san ramon. a few dozen students participated in the protest of stand for the 2nd. they stood outside the school waving signs and the american flag. the 16-minute pro gun rally is in response to the gun control walkouts that have been staged in the wake of the parkland, florida school shooting. >> we want to show at least people that support the second amendment and you don't have to be afraid to -- if you don't support the second amendment. >> other schools include montgomery high in santa rosa, college park in martinez, and downtown college prep alum rock in san jose that participated. a damaged sailboat that ran aground in pacifica is being removed. crews are working to free that 33-foot boat. it's been in the spot since

saturday night. that's when the captain said that the engine malfunctioned. he managed to steer the boat away from some rocks and towards the beach. four people on board escaped with minor injuries. a fiery car crash in vacaville this morning. at least one person is dead. it happened just after 3:00 on eastbound interstate 80 at leisuretown road. the freeway remained open but at one point an on- and off- ramp were shut down. a mess in the road in palo alto when a truck hit a pole sending it down around 5 a.m. this was at the oregon expressway off-ramp along northbound 101. the driver had minor injuries. oakland city leaders are breaking ground today on a housing development near a major transit hub. the village will stand 24 stories tall near the macarthur bart station. kpix 5's jessica flores on the compromise that is allowing developers to exceed city height limits. >> reporter: i'm standing in the 8-acre dirt lot that will

soon be the site of that high- rise development with a tower taller than any surrounding building. standing 24 stories tall, the rendering show the luxury skyline building along turquoise way, 402 units just steps from the macarthur bart station and one step toward easing the housing crunch, says oakland mayor libby schaaf. >> every unit even luxury units help alleviate the shortage of housing that is driving prices up. >> reporter: city leaders and the developer boston properties broke ground on what will be a 260-foot-high tower. the city council granted the developer an exemption from the 90-foot-tall height limit after the developer agreed to set aside about 10% of the units for affordable housing. >> we insisted upon that and we would not let any developer come in here without the affordable housing units. so that was an absolute requirement. >> reporter: the bottom floor will be made up of businesses and office space. the mixed use tower set to transform the neighborhood landscape.

>> you only have one chance to build density in places like this. once the building gets built, it's a 50 to 100-year decision that the city is making. and so, you know, you got to be more forward thinking about it. and that's the way we approached it. >> reporter: in oakland, jessica flores, kpix 5. >> the project is part of bart's overall goal to bring more housing near stations. to washington now, where a key white house lawyer representing president trump in the russia investigation is now leaving. the news comes as the president's legal team tries to hammer out details of a possible trump interview with the special counsel. mola lenghi has the latest. >> reporter: a white house lawyer representing president trump in connection with special counsel robert mueller's russia investigation announced his retirement at the end of the month. attorney ty cobb told cbs news' major garrett in january that the president is very eager to speak with the special counsel. >> i think at the end of the day, it's pretty clear that on the collusion side of, you

know, allegations, there is no quid pro quo between the trump campaign and russians. >> reporter: news of the retirement comes a day after one of the president's former lawyers told the "associated press" mueller raised the idea of a subpoena during a meeting in early march to force the president to testify under oath. in a tweet this morning, the president once again called the investigation a witch hunt, dismissing claims of collusion as a hoax, and obstruction of justice as a setup and trap. a subpoena has always been an option for the special counsel but to use one on a sitting president would be an extraordinary move. if mueller issued one, the president could fight it in court or invoke his fifth amendment right against self- incrimination. meanwhile, deputy attorney general rod rosenstein, who oversees mueller's investigation, pushed back against reports that republican lawmakers were drafting articles of impeachment against him. >> i think they should understand by now that at department of justice is not going to be extorted. >> reporter: republican members of the house freedom caucus say impeachment would

be used against rosenstein as a last resort. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. >> attorney emmett flood will replace ty cobb and represent president trump in the russia investigation. he represented president clinton when he faced impeachment. the president's former bodyguard did nothing wrong by taking the president's medical records from his former doctor last year. but dr. harold bornstein said the unannounced visit felt like a raid. in 2015, the trump campaign released a letter from dr. bornstein that said, quote, if elected, mr. trump i can state unequivocally will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency. yesterday bornstein said mr. trump dictated the entire letter. >> as a standard operating proceed for any new president, the white house medical unit took possession of the president's medical records. >> the white house says the medical records were seized at the request of the white house medical unit. still ahead, a man is sent to prison for nearly four

life behind bars for a double homicide he didn't commit. now investigators are wondering if the crime might be linked to joseph deangelo the alleged golden state killer suspected in 12 murders and more than 50 rapes across california. coley was wrongfully convicted in the deaths of his ex- girlfriend rhonda wick who was raped and strangled and her 4- year-old son donald, who was suffocated. >> do you think that the golden state killer could be responsible? >> oh, that's a possibility. i think that there are other suspects that are more likely. >> reporter: what if he does turn out to be the killer? >> well, it will be solved. you know? maybe the family can rest. maybe they can relax. >> reporter: how about you? >> i could care less about him. >> reporter: simi valley police have asked for a comparison of deangelo's dna with wick's actual killer. deangelo has already been charged with two murders in ventura county where simi

valley is located. he allegedly killed lyman and charlene smith in 1980 two years before wick and her son were killed. >> we have other leads to look at. one thing is it will be good that we know we have eliminated a suspect. >> reporter: last year, police recovered long lost crime scene evidence and tested it for dna, technology not available at the time of coley's trial. the results ruled coley out as the murderer. former simi valley detective michael bender helped win coley's freedom. he quit the police department in 1991 because he was convinced coley was innocent and then devoted his life to trying to prove it. he is also curious about deangelo. >> knowing everything you know about the investigation in your heart of hearts, do you think that dna is going to match? >> i would be surprised. i'm happy to be wrong. >> reporter: wick's sitster is also skeptical the dna will match. she told cbs news based on the golden state killer's m.o., it's doubtful. the deputy cheer here says it's a long shot.

carter evans, cbs news, simi valley, california. new at noon, cambridge analytica the firm at the center of facebook's privacy scandal says it's declaring bankruptcy now and shutting down. meantime, word that the photos that you post to instagram are helping parent company facebook train in ai algorithms, one of the many revelations at their developers conference today. it uses hashtags on photos that users post to help its artificial intelligence spot patterns and then uses those to structure user news feeds. >> this is still an active area for research, so these methods will continue to improve and adapt as the applications of ai and the types of protections that we need for ai evolves. >> and facebook says it used about 3.5 billion photos from public accounts to train its ai system. let's take a live look out at the big board and see how the dow is doing.

it's down 72. new at noon, a name change for the boy scouts. starting in february, programs for older scouts will be called scouts bsa. the change is part of the expansion that will allow girls to join. only the program for those ages 11 to 17 currently called the boy scouts is affected. the program for children ages 5 to 10 called the cub scouts will keep the name. and the organization as a whole will keep the name boy scouts of america, as well. let's get a check on weather with neda. hey there. >> hey there. so i was taking a look at pacifica. check out the surfers. there are so many out there. also there's a sailboat that's still stuck onshore. so if the camera pans over just right, oh, there it is. perfect timing. all right. looks like they have the tractor-trailer and people with shovels out there earlier. but now the tide is coming in, high tide at 2 p.m. so the waves are getting in the way of their efforts to remove that sailboat that beached there on saturday night. it's still stuck out there. look at the way the sail is

continues on the golden gate bridge.. ell, today's tip of the day is going to be is with cilantro. it's not just for hispanic, mexican food, it's for all times of cuisine. the oils that come out of it, the aroma, it's beautiful. oh!! buying, storing it, very important. when buy it nice and green all the way around, and feel silky and fresh to the touch. when you bring it home, don't wash it before you put it in the refrigerator but wash it before you enjoy it. once in the refrigerator with the bag open, only store it for a few days and that's it. cilantro, use it in so many different recipes. i like to rip it by hand. if you cut it, the cilantro, to use it a lot of times some of that oil gets on the knife and you lose it. so rip like you would basil. and i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. nd always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy.
