more hours. now as jessica flores reports we get an idea of motive. >> reporter: this was the scene of an active shooter situation. it's a homicide investigation now. the marin county sheriff's department believes this stems from a tenant landlord dispute. the marin county sheriff's office is revealing what led up to this intense scene. s.w.a.t. teams moved in, tenants ran from their apartments. investigators say an 80-year- old tenant shot his landlord and his landlord's daughter after an argument over a pending eviction. the landlord's daughter died. the father is expected to survive. >> first deputies on scene grabbed the two victims, carried them out of the scene to awaiting ambulances. >> reporter: the shooting prompted the sheriff's department to set up a perimeter to search for the gunman. the entire neighborhood was locked down including a nearby daycare center. >> i think they are pretty

terrified. she told the cop she had six babies in here, keep them safe, and they said they would. >> reporter: they used a battering ram to get in, then threw a flash-bang inside. after rushing in, they found him dead, a revolver by his feet. investigators said he died from an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound. residents are back home and at this point the sheriff hasn't released the names of the victims or the shooter. in mill valley, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. >> this information just in to our newsroom. officials now have identified the victim as 30-year-old sabrina lu of mill valley. the other victim 84-year-old leonard lu is still in icu. 71-year-old victor lugo is the suspect. highway 4 is open again after a horrific accident in discovery bay. two cars were involved in the crash, one ending up on its

roof. one person had moderate injuries, three others minor injuries. officers describe it as a high- speed crash. he cause is under investigation. it's only been a week since bart officially approved its extension into downtown san jose, and it's already facing a hurdle. anne makovec on the lawsuit just filed by a major bay area sports team that could stop the project in its tracks. >> reporter: the lawsuit says the sharks organization will be negatively impacted by construction and lost parking here near the s.a.p. center and that transportation officials haphazardly pushed through the plan for this bart station underground. the sharks sports and entertainment company is suing the santa clara valley transportation authority and bart saying because vta is so biased in favor of its own transportation systems, it refused to consider studies or conduct studies that might challenge the agency's biases. last week the $4.7 billion

proposal for bart's extension to san jose was approved. a state-of-the-art single tunnel under the heart of downtown with riders dropped off by the "s.a.p. center" which hosts games, events and concerts. while the sharks say they are supportive of bart coming to san jose, the president said in a statement: we don't think the current plan addresses several important issues for "s.a.p. center" including a promise to ensure adequate parking in the diridon area and a safe and accessible environment for our customers during construction. we do not take this decision lightly. >> reporter: no comment today from the vta. and a bart spokesman referred us back to the vta saying: >> reporter: this all comes as transportation officials are asking for federal grants for this plan and the feds do consider local opposition when deciding whether or not to award those grants.

in san jose, anne makevoc, kpix 5. new at noon, oakland's mayor is offering a progress report on the city's homeless situation. she held a town hall meeting to address the crisis. kpix 5's jackie ward was there. >> i have never seen anything like this. >> reporter: the homeless problem in oakland is no secret. trash swallows sidewalks and tent encampments sprawl out from under freeways. oakland mayor libby schaaf said her city has seen a 25% increase in people living on the street, most of them last housed in oakland. >> 82% when we did this count last year, 82% had last been housed in alameda county. >> reporter: as dismal as those numbers are, schaaf reassured the audience that some progress has been made, like a "tuff shed" shelter at sixth and castro. >> 15 people have already gotten full-time jobs out of the 40 that were there. eight of them have now gotten into permanent housing. so once we get people

stabilized, we're really able to help get them back on their feet. >> reporter: it's gotten the attention of washington, d.c. in a good way. schaaf said just yesterday, her office got a call from the department of housing and urban development asking more about oakland's "tuff sheds" and how they can help. >> so we are one of the very few cities in the country that they are actually giving us some technical assistance to help further develop that, to analyze it, to see how we can make it more cost-effective. >> reporter: while the solutions schaaf mentioned are helping short term, schaaf reminded people that the long- term solution to eliminating homelessness is affordable housing. in west oakland, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> mayor schaaf also reminded people at today's town hall meeting that the city of oakland finally has 311. it's a number people can call to report anything from illegal dumping to potholes. evacuations are under way in hawaii as one of the world's largest active volcanos, mount kileaua, continues to erupt sending lava into neighborhoods there.

cbs reporter danielle nottingham has the very latest. >> reporter: hawaii's kileaua volcano erupted thursday sending ash into the sky and lava spewing into residential areas. >> a crack right there in the road. the road is cracking. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows the ground breaking open amid the intense heat. >> we could hear the lava exploding. >> reporter: he was among thousands of people who only had minutes to pack up and get out. >> we had to evacuate my mother without any portable oxygen so that's the first concern. she is 88. >> reporter: the eruption of one of the world's largest volcanos came after days of earthquakes in the area that left sizable cracks across streets and in front of homes. >> i smelt it and i ran to the corner and that's when i ran into a military officer that told me it was smoking. >> reporter: time lapse video from last week shows the activity inside the crater. experts worry the magma could travel underground and threaten homes miles away. with mandatory evacuations in

place, the national guard is mobilized to provide security to 800 structures. >> we have two separate shelters set up right now. we have one shelter set up at a gym for pets. we have another one inside. >> reporter: kileaua has been in a constant state of eruption since 1983. officials can't predict how long this one will last. danielle nottingham, cbs news. the man who led authorities on a nearly four- hour chase in an rv from los angeles to the bakersfield area is now in police custody. 46-year-old stephen houk was arrested yesterday afternoon in the barstow area. officials say he was found inside a railcar. houk fled with his two young children inside the motorhome tuesday afternoon. police followed him for more than 100 miles. houk is a parolee out of oregon and also a convicted sex offender. a live look now from dallas, where president trump is speaking at the national rifle association annual convention today. he said that he is going to vow to protect the second amendment. we have a look at the

it's now hanging over the coastline so not bad. not a bad way to start the weekend. so what you will expect to see for the weekend will be sunny warm afternoons especially for those inland areas. we are watching for a low up here and that's going to bring us a chance for some rain but only the very northern edge of california right by the mendocino county area. that's where the rain will come down on sunday. it's going to bring our temperatures down slightly, as well. for us today, 64 for san francisco. afternoon highs that's where we should be. san jose about 8 degrees above average and the low 80s. campbell 81, los gatos 82. half moon bay 59. so about a 20-degree difference depending where you are if you are at the coast versus inland areas. of course, that's where the warmer air is. so if you like the warmer air, head east to antioch, brentwood, 83 degrees. right around the bay temperatures are around the mid-60s for sausalito, 67 in
