from the air you can watch the lava flows in hawaii's leilani state light the houses and consume them. this woman watched dozens of videos of their home disappeared. >> my son with go home? >> reporter: more than 1,700 have been evacuated since hundreds of earthquakes started to rock the big island last week and at least 11 volcanic fissures opened up. some are at a slow boil, others are spewing 200 feet into the air. >> it's like a goliath. like a roaring jet engine. >> get your belongings and get back out. >> reporter: some families have been allowed back in, cramming as many clothes and keepsakes that can fit in their cars. >> if we get a second load we'll get things that make us more comfortable but we're living out of a backpack.

>> reporter: many are frustrated by the long lines getting back into the homes but there's a concern that lava will cover more roads and trap more people. >> the prognosis is to continue. we see no slowdown in activity. >> reporter: lava has spread 400,000 square feet surrounding the most active fissure. one resident said that the volcano and lava have been a part of her life. it's devastating but she said, i came to terms with it. anne-marie. >> thank you so much, john. president trump's new attorney rudy giuliani said he could defy a subpoena from special counsel robert mueller or refuse to answer questions. he said that michael cohen may have made payments to other women in addition to stormy daniels. >> my issue with getting up to speed on the facts here, i'm about halfway there. >> reporter: president trump's lawyer rudy giuliani further explained inconsistencies in his defense of mr. trump. and suggested the president

might resist a subpoena from special counsel robert mueller compelling him to of the under oath. >> we don't have to. we can assert the same privilege as other presidents have. >> reporter: democrats say the president must cooperate. >> he's going to need to comply with the subpoena if they take that case to court they'll lose. >> so what up, girl? >> reporter: stormy daniels who alleges an affair with mr. trump and is suing to get out of the nondisclosure agreement appeared on tv joking about the risk her case poses to trump's presidency. >> what do you need for this to go away? >> a resignation. >> reporter: questions remain over payments made to michael cohen for hush money paid to daniels during if election. giuliani said it was all legal. >> number one, it was not a campaign contribution because it was done anyway. number two, even if it was considered a campaign contribution it was paid out of personal funds. >> i think it's obvious this is a cover-up that they're making it up as they go along.

>> reporter: rushing water flooded a carnival cruise ship reminding some of the eerie scenes from the movie "titanic." one passenger said we are flooding on a cruise, we heard the violins and the silverware come crashing down. crew members filled buckets as the water line breaks sent a deluge of water pouring out of the pipes. the carnival dream departed new orleans on a seven day cruise through the western caribbean. the water flooded 50 state rooms. despite the dramatic video carnival said that the water main break had no effect on the safe operation of the ship. the safety and security of our guests and crew is our top priority. within six hours, the crew managed to replace most of the carpeting and the damaged areas. so passengers could return to their rooms. others slept on yoga mats in the spa. >> our cruise director and the captain told us all about it. that there was -- when we came

out of belize when the ship turned it put pressure on the pipe and one of them burst. >> reporter: the nearly 2,500 passengers returned to port. >> i'm not word writed about going on a ship out to sea. that's easy day. >> reporter: passengers received a full refund and 50% off any future cruise. they were also offered the option to fly home the day after the water conditions developed. meg oliver, cbs news, new york. well, in nashville the mother of one of the victims in the deadly waffle house shooting accepted her daughter's college diploma. shirl baker walked across the stage on saturday. her daughter, deebony groves was one of four people who was killed when a gunman opened fire on april 22. her brother di'angelo groves received his did plow what.

spots were confirmed on the tour. the mother said they were the victim of racial profiling. a federal lawsuit accused two protesters who are prominent figures in the world of tae kwon do of sexual abuse. 39-year-old olympic gold medalist stephen lopez and his brother and coach gene are accused of sexually abusing female athletes including minors for years. the lawsuit accuses the u.s. olympic committee of turning a mind eye to the abuse. the brothers have denied the allegations. stoneman douglas high school were honored at the prom. it was turned into the enchanted forest on saturday and the sculpture with the records msd strong sat in the hallway. 17 students and faculty were killed in the massacre. a miracle child came back to life from brain injuries after his parents signed organ nation. 13-year-old mckinley was close to death after a dune buggy accident in alabama two months ago. >> it slipped. and i hit the concrete and the trailer landed on top of my head. after that, i don't remember anything. >> mckinley suffered seven skull fractures and he was brain dead. the day before doctors were set to pull the plug on his life support system in march he began showing signs of mental activity. mckinley says he went to heaven before he was brought back to earth. his mother calls it a miracle. and the british royal family

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," driver cars from lyft are hitting the roads in las vegas. diane king hall has that and more. good morning. >> good morning. well stocks here on wall street finished last week on an upbeat. now with the dow posting its biggest one day gain since april 10 but it wasn't enough to pull the dow and the s&p 500 for the week. pilots and other staff at air france are expected to walk off the job today. the latest work stoppage is an ongoing battle for higher wages.

they were offered a 7% wage increase prompting the chief executive to resign. unions are calling for a 5.1% increase this year. british government owns a 14% stake in the airline and yesterday the air france prime minister said they could disappear if they couldn't fix their finances. lyft plans to deploy 30 self-driving cars and they'll ferry passengers from the convention centers to the hotel. a service is expected to kick off in july or august. and "avengers, infinity war" dominated the theaters for the second week in a row. it is estimated to have taken in $112.5 million from north american theaters over the weekend. becoming the second highest grossing film in weekend two

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the u.s. and melanoma is the deadliest kind. doctors say while they're seeing more cases of melanoma, it's preventible and it's treatable if it's caught early. dr. marshall has more. >> reporter: katie is grateful for these moments.

>> i saw my life fash before any eyes. >> reporte: a trip to the dermatologist turned out to be stage 3 melanoma. >> i'm 37 weeks pregnant. they're telling me i have the deadliest skin cancer that there is. i was just completely distraught. >> reporter: melanoma has been increasing in recent years. it's now one of the most common cancers in young adults. especially young women. nearly 90% are thought to be caused by exposure to uv light from indoor tanning and the sun. >> it tends to occur in younger women, specifically in areas that are often covered, on the thighs or on the abdomen or even on the breasts or buttocks. >> reporter: dr. elizabeth hale recommends yearly skin checks. >> if you see a mole that's changing or a new spot on the skin, they should get that checked out immediately. most skin cancers are completely preventible. and most skin cancers are totally curable when they're caught early. >> reporter: katie was indeuced

eight days. nicky batiste reports. >> reporter: gun violence returned to the streets of chicago. resulting in a week marked by tragedy and death. the recent warm weather may have played a role in the crime surge. after a frigid first four months of 2018, the city had seen a 22% drop in murders. and a 26% decrease in shootings compared with the same period last year. but this week's gun violence seems to have put an end to safer streets. since saturday morning, bullets killed two men and wounded 16 others including a 12-year-old boy. 28 people were shot since friday. with more than 50 shootings this week. law enforcement officers were not spared. >> i need an escort to a [ bleep ] hospital right now. officer hit! >> reporter: on friday an agent for the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms was working undercover when he was shot in the face. >> i have ordered specialized units into the area to ensure

the safety of the community residents and to conduct a manhunt for anyone involved in this reprehensible crime. >> reporter: hundreds of officers are searching for suspects. >> they came in through the door, you know what i mean? a lot of agents. >> reporter: but the focus on finding the person involved in the atf agents attack has infuriated some local residents. they say gunfire in their neighborhoods happen daily but they don't see the same police response. >> just because you're wearing a badge you matter more? how does that -- how do you think that makes us feel? >> reporter: chicago police say they want to build relationships with the residents in the neighborhood. more than $60,000 is being offered as a reward for any information leading to an arrest in the atf agents' shooting. he's expected to make a full recovery. well, coming up on "cbs this morning," police departments nationwide are trying to build a better relationship with the
