live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. we begin with breaking news a van crash into a home in fremont. this is a live look at the scene near barnard drive. this is according to officers at the scene. someone behind the wheel of this white van crashed into the home. luckily, no one was hurt. fire crews and a tow truck operator have been working for

the past hour to remove the van. and we're following another breaking story right now. chopper 5 live is over a very bad accident in san leandro. an ambulance and car collided at lou elling and hisparing. this is in san leandro. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you more information as we get it. our other top story this afternoon, thousands of uc workers on strike, the issue, salaries. jessica flores is live at uc berkeley where workers have been picketing since early this morning. >> reporter: we have been out here with these workers all morning long. take a look, dozens of them on the picket line now wearing green t-shirts in solidarity. a lot of signs here. and one thing to note, this is finals week for students. so those students aren't having

their cafeteria workers, guards, custodians, they're all out here on strike. >> we are not second class workers. >> for this uc berkeley custodian, today is a family affair. her son and sister are also on the front line of the uc strikes. >> we're the backbone of this university. and we want them to understand that we have families too. we struggle with our families everyday. >> some 50,000 workers across 10 uc campuses are off the job. over what they site as widening income, racial, and gender inequality among the university's lowest wage workers. the union representing service workers such as gardeners and cooks is driving the action. but other workers, including nurses are on sympathy strike. >> it's a very nervous day for me. not knowing what tomorrow is going to bring.

basically hoping and praying we get a contract. contract negotiation haves stalled after the union rejected the university's offer of a 3% raise. the university says the union wants a 6% annual raise over three years. a university spokesperson released a statement saying in part, our employees are paid at or above what other employers pay for comparable jobs. the university cannot justify to taxpayers such an excessive raise. >> we want to work and live in the areas where we work. >> he's worked here for two the decades. >> working for the university, i can't send my own kids to college at the university that i work for. >> there are similar scenes just like this at uc campuses across the state. at ucsf they're also having an

action today. they had to put 300 surgeries on hold because of the health care workers who are joining the strike. the uc system says that's why they don't agree with the strike. they say it's putting patients at risk. they continue to be on strike at least through wednesday. live in berkeley, kpix 5. jessica, thank you. police nab three shoplifting suspects who led them on a high- speed chase in the east bay. officers say their car was speeding more than 100 miles per hour before crashing into an electrical box in alamo. you can see the damage from chopper 5. the suspects are identified as kamoney gains and daniel hooper. and 31-year-old john williams. they're accused of stealing power tools from a home depot store in san ramon. jeff sessions is headed to san diego this afternoon. part of a two-state swing to talk about immigration and enforceable. kpix 5 is in the news room with

more. he's traveling with the director of immigration and customs enforcement. and this morning, the attorney general spoke in arizona. >> the border is not open. the border is not open. don't come unlawfully. >> speaking at a conference of law enforcement officials the u.s. attorney general reiterated his disdain for sanctuary jurisdiction whose policies prohibit local law enforcement from helping or sharing information with federal immigration officials. california became a sanctuary state this year. and today sessions vowed to continue the trump administration's legal fight against it. >> we're not going to put up with it. we're going to fight it as hard as we can. and we're going to call on the people of these jurisdictions to ask their leaders what are you doing? do you not believe in law? do you believe that all you have to do is get into america unlawful hi and never to the be

deported. >> a week after a hundred central american migrants traveled to the u.s. border seeking asylum. sessions announced last week that the u.s. is sending 25 assistant united states attorneys to the border to prosecute illegal entries into the country. and 18 immigration judges would be sent to process asylum claims. the trump administration is often at odds with the state of california. they is allies in san diego where sessions will be speaking today. the county is backing the feds in allotter over california's sanctuary state laws. kpix 5. the eruption of mount kilauea is now in its fifth day showing no signs of slowing down. cbs news' carter evans shows us the lava destroyed dozens of homes and forced entire communities to evacuate the area. >> from the air, lines of smoke show where lava is flowing as homes continue to burn. >> up here in the helicopter,

you can get an idea of the scope of the destruction below. you don't see any firefighters down there because there's nothing they can do. this is an unstoppable force. >> the lava has consumed everything in its path. including trees and homes. it crept across the street and slowly enveloped this car. >> the eruption progressed. a few more extensive flows. it seems like there's a lot of mag ma under the ground. >> ten fissures have opened up on the eastern slope of the kilauea volcano. in some cases the eruptions were so violent, lava spewed more than 200 feet in the air. >> it may not look like the lava is moving. it's cooled. there's a crust on top. but if you look at the leading edge on the road, it's slowly inching forward. >> over the weekend, the big island was rocked by dozens of

your afternoon highs through pacifica, low 60s, 74 in redwood city, 71 in oakland. 76 in vallejo. in the 80s for santa rosa, napa, and fairfield. sunrise tomorrow at 6:06. tomorrow we'll get more cloud coverage out there. right now all the clouds that came through over the weekend for your sunday moved on further toward utah and what we're going to see is this low that's going to bring us a little shift. we're not going to get rain from that system by any means. but what we'll likely see is more cloud cover tomorrow into wednesday and temperatures will dip a little bit for tuesday and wednesday. here's a look at the future cast, 10:00 tomorrow morning, partly cloudy conditions through the north bay along the coast, cloudy through 2:00 p.m. or so. then things clear up. then the clouds over turn again on wednesday morning. but no marine in sight on the future cast at least. after the system passes through, look what happens. temperatures will be on the rise. we have that ridge of high

pressure for thursday, friday, and saturday. we're going to go from warm, to cool, to hot. >> unfortunately, some sad news for the oakland a's organization. the mother of outfielder, stephen, lost her battle to als, she spent her final days with her son and family by her side. his mother was diagnosed with the neurological disorder known as lou gehrig's disease a year ago. the cardinals traded him to the a's to be closer to his mom. the a's released this statement today saying the athletics organization extends its deepest condolences to the family on the loss of gretchen, she was a devoted wife and mother whose legacy will live on through her husband and their sons. still ahead, tragedy early in life helped give her the strength to push forward.

struggle managed to keep their families together. she's found an inner strength she never knew she had. and my grandmother passed away that day. 20:10 i didn't even really know what death was. i remember sitting in my hospital room and crying and praying to my sister because i that sh the tragedy was splashed across the pages of news papers, two tires blown on a car on the road to los angeles. kimberly ramirez gonzales was in that car. she was 13 years old. her 11-year-old sister, rosa, was thrown from the car. rosa and my grandmother both passed away that day. i didn't understand what death was. i remember crying to my sister. because i just couldn't comprehend that she was gone forever. >> the tragedy and responsibility stuck with kimberly like a shadow. sending her into a spiral. >> that turned me on to drinking at the age of 13. you know. by the time i was 14. i realized i was an alcoholic. and i started going to aa meetings. >> wanting to set a good example for her little
