good morning from the studio 57 at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. the attorney general of new york state, eric schneiderman, abruptly resigned following allegations by four women that he physically abused them. schneiderman, known as an advocate for women's issues, says he has not assaulted anyone. however, his resignation is effective at the end of the business day today. john schiumo is here in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. eric schneiderman maintains his innocence despite his resignation. he describes the accusations of violence as consensual role-playing sexual activity. his former girlfriends tell a different story.n is denying allegations from four women who claim the new york attorney general repeatedly hit and choked them, usually after he consumed large amounts of alcohol. two of the women who were

romantically involved with schneiderman have publicly identified themselves and say he threatened to kill them if they left him. neither filed any police complaints but say they sought out medical attention. the accusations published by "the new yorker" were followed by calls for schneiderman to resign, and three hours later, he did, issuing this statement -- "in the last several hours, serious allegations, which i strongly contest, have been made against me. while the allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office's work at this critical time." [ applause ] during his nearly eight years as new york's highest ranking law enforcement officer, schneiderman has filed suit to protect immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. in february his office sued the weinstein company, demanding greater compensation for alleged victims of disgraced movie mogul harvey weinstein. >> sometimes they were targets

themselves. if they refused, they were threatened with insults. their careers were threatened. they were threatened with physical intimidation and violence. >> reporter: new york's governor andrew cuomo has called for an investigation. and the new york city police department says if it receives complaints of a crime, it, too, will investigate thoroughly. >> john schiumo here in new york. thank you very much, john. president trump says he'll announce his decision on the iran nuclear deal this afternoon. the president has long criticized the agreement which he calls the worst deal ever. american allies have been trying to persuade mr. trump to maintain the agreement. the british foreign minister made a last-ditch appeal to the administration during a visit to washington. weijia jiang reports. >> reporter: british foreign secretary boris johnson met with secretary of state mike pompeo to urge the u.s. to remain a part of the nuclear deal with iran. >> which could lead to a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: johnson did not

meet with president trump but may have been trying to send him a message about withdrawing by appearing on fox news. >> you can't do that without just throw the baby out with the bath water, without scrapping the whole thing. if you do that, you have to answer the question what next. >> reporter: the agreement brokered by the obama administration, european allies, russia, and china in 2015 lifted sanctions on iran in exchange for caps on its nuclear program. >> this deal is the all-time worst. >> reporter: president trump has railed against it since the campaign, but american allies are hoping he will accept a side deal to address his concerns like iran's growing ballistic missile program. so is former secretary of state john kerry who negotiated the his office confirmed kerry has strategized with foreign officials about keeping the u.s. in the agreement. mr. trump tweeted, "the united states does not need john kerry's possibly illegal shadow diplomacy.

he was the one that created this mess in the first place." on state tv, iran's president said if americas leaves it would be okay as long as the other countries preserve the terms. he added, "americans will be the main losers." weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. now to the russia investigation and reports mr. trump is becoming increasingly frustrated with his new lawyer, rudy giuliani. giuliani told cbs news the two sides are negotiating the terms of a presidential interview. also that robert mueller has already rejected a proposal to have the president answer questions in writing. giuliani says that he wants the questions in advance, and that if the two sides can agree on terms for an interview, it would have to wait until after the north korean summit. meanwhile, the associated press reports the president is becoming irritated with giuliani and is talking about preventing his new lawyer from doing television interviews. in hawaii now, lava and gas

are pouring out of two new cracks in the ground following the eruption of the kilauea volcano. >> wow! i wish you could see this live. unbelievable. >> some residents found spewing lava in their back yards. there are now 12 fissures in the neighborhood where 35 buildings have burned down near kilauea. it's believed 26 are homes. evacuated residents are being allowed to check on their property during the day. it's unclear how long the eruption will go on for. so far there are no reported injuries. and president trump's nominee to head the cia, gina haspel, says she's looking forward to tomorrow's confirmation hearing. haspel visited capitol hill yesterday to meet with democrats concerned about her role in the use of water boarding to interrogate prisoners following the 9/11 attacks. >> she's a professional.

she deserves the right. ultimately, an open way of listening to her and letting her explain herself and the job she's done for our country. i think we owe that to her. >> extreme interrogation techniques like water board regular currently against u.s. law. haspel has told lawmakers she would oppose efforts to change that. advocacy groups are blasting the zero-tolerance policy toward people who enter the country illegally. details by attorney general jeff sessions. speaking at the border in san diego yesterday, sessions explained how the policy would expand criminal prosecutions. those who cross the border illegally will be prosecuted even if it means the separation of parents and children. >> if you cross the border unlawfully, we will prosecute you. it's that simple. if you smuggle aliens across our border, then we will prosecute you. if you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you.

trayvon martin's killer is in new legal trouble, and the national rifle association announces its leader. those are some of the headlines on "morning newsstand." the "richmond times dispatch" reports iran-contra figure oliver north has been named president of the national rifle association. north will be the biggest celebrity to lead the gun lobby since actor charlton heston. during the reagan administration, north helped arrange the secret sale of weapons to iran and the dwe diversion of anti-communist rebels in nicaragua. he was convicted on several charges, but the convictions were later overturned. "the orlando sentinel" says george zimmerman has been charged with stalking and threatening a private investigator. he said he contacted zimmerman in september on behalf of the executive producer behind a documentary series on trayvon martin. the series is being produced by rapper jay-z. court records show the investigator received dozens and dozens of phone calls, texts, voice mails, and emails from

zimmerman in december. zimmerman shot and killed martin in 2012. he was acquitted of all charges. the "washington post" reports fair housing advocates plan to sue hud and its secretary, ben carson, today for suspending an obama-era fair housing rule. the rule requires communities to draft plans to address patterns of segregation and discrimination or risk losing federal funds. the lawsuit alleges carson unlawfully suspended the rule by not providing advance public notice or opportunity for comment. "the fort worth star telegram" reports more than 1,700 women signed an open letter denouncing southern baptist leader paige patterson after his comments about abused women. the letter calls on the southwestern baptist theological seminary to take action. last week, audio from a 2000 interview of patterson surfaced. he's heard counseling abused women to submit to their husbands and pray rather than seek divorce. patterson says he's never condoned abuse. and "time" magazine reports

and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we'll start with oil prices. they're sitting at the highest level since 2014. prices rose yesterday on concerns about supply levels. benchmark u.s. crude prices are sitting around $70 a barrel, but prices have moderated a bit this morning ahead of president trump's announcement on iran, one of the world's largest oil producers. stocks on wall street finished higher yesterday thanks to gains in tech and bank shares. the dow rose 94 points. the s&p 500 picked up 9. the nasdaq gained 55. americans are borrowing more according to the federal reserve, borrowing $11.6 million in march. a big increase in autos and student loans outweighed the largest drop in credit card borrowing in more than ive years. walmart is tightening its opioid prescription policy in an effort to fight the nationwide epidemic. the retail giant will fill

mitsubishi outlander, the family's second electric vehicle. what excited you about electric? >> just the pure acceleration, the low-end torque, it's smooth and quiet. it's just fun to drive. >> reporter: michael pulled the plug on gas-powered cars five years ago, part of a growing demand for electric. according to a new aaa study, that interest is up 15% from last year. >> we found that one in five americans are interested in an electric vehicle for their next purchase. >> reporter: aaa's greg brannon says the top reason drivers give are a concern for the environment and lower long-term costs. the cars don't need oil changes and have fewer moving parts, so there's less to fix. even though electric and hybrid sales are on the rise, they still make up just 3% of overall u.s. vehicle sales. brannon believes that number will only increase as more options become available and gas prices go up. >> as we look to the future, the
