good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump is back in washington this morning after celebrates the return of three americans who were held prisoner in north korea. during a campaign rally in indiana, mr. trump used the release as a rallying cry for americans to mobilize during the upcoming midterm elections. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning. that's right. the president touted his accomplishments at the indiana rally, pointing to low unemployment, job growth, and overall economic pros. progress. he hopes it will drive people to the polls to vote republican this fall. >> we are rocking. >> president trump greeted a friendly crowd in elkhart, indiana, urging people to vote republican during the midterm elections.

>> the strides that we're making have never, ever been made like this before, but it can also disappear if you put fools and if you put the wrong people in. >> the president continues to celebrate the release of three americans from north korea and is looking forward to his june 12th summit with north korean leader kim jong-un, which will take place in singapore. >> so the relationship is good, and hopefully, i mean, for all of us, for the world, hopefully something very good is going to happen. >> appealing to constituents in a state that relies on manufacturing, the president hailed his recent directive to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. he also praised the decision to walk away from the 2015 iran nuclear deal. >> a deal that would allow iran to go right to the brink of nuclear weapons. >> but some democrats say iran is now more likely to resume its nuclear program. >> it means the nuclear deal over time is more likely to

unravel and iran may go back to the pursuit of highly enriched uranium. >> the indiana rally was the president's fourth in the last two weeks. president obama suffered a loss in congress during the 2010 and 2014 midterm elections, an outcome president trump obviously hopes to avoid. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you, laura. the department of homeland security is pushing back against a report that secretary kirstjen nielsen was close to resigning this week. nielsen reportedly told colleagues she was ready to quit after a tirade against her by president trump. that's according to "the new york times." they have clashed in illegal immigration and what the president believes is weak border enforcement. but in a statement nielsen said the president is rightly frustrated that his administration has been prevented from fully securing the border. a pentagon report on the ambush that killed four american

soldiers in niger found the enemy achieved tactical surprise against u.s. and nigerian forces that were greatly outnumbered. the report concludes no american was captured alive during last october's attack and cites numerous acts of bravery and several mistakes. david martin has details. >> reporter: the team of americans and nigerian soldiers had ben searching for a suspected terrorist for nearly 36 hours when they were ambushed. general thomas waldhauser said he had never seen anything of this magnitude, numbers, mobility, and training. it was a total tactical surprise. >> reporter: the re-creation shows the troops got out of their unarmored vehicles and returned fire but realizing they were outnumbered, they tried to

outdrive the kill zone. one vehicle was left behind. >> two remained with staff sergeant black. >> reporter: they ran until the bullets caught up with them. >> staff sergeant dustin wright stopped and rendered immobile. returned to near his teammates' condition and continued to engage the enemy until both were fatally wounded. >> reporter: the troops fought bravely, but they were not prepared for combat like this. >> you need to be able to operate like clockwork. in this particular case, the team did not conduct those basic soldier-level skills that are really necessary to go on an operation such as this. >> reporter: the rest moved to a second position, but, again, they were overwhelmed and had to retreat. the team's captain was shot and thrown from the vehicle. >> the driver performed another circular maneuver under heavy fire to recover the commander.

>> reporter: sergeant la david johnson made a dash for life, which chief cloutier said ended at this thorn tree. >> he ran 960 meters. he ran a long way from where he was seen and he mailed his last stand until he fought to the end against a thorny tree. >> reporter: some soldiers will almost certainly receive medals for their bravery, but some will receive possible disciplinary action for their failures in training and planning that preceded the ambush. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. we are learning more about russian efforts about facebook. the house intelligence committee released some 3,500 facebook ads bought by russian agents from mid-2015 to mid-2017. the ads touched on issues ranging from black lives matter to immigration, targeting narrow categories of users as purchased by agents tied to a kremlin-backed company that

reached an estimated 10 million facebook users during the white house election. a white house aide who mocked senator mccain has reportedly apologized to his family. the day after mccain announced his opposition to the president's nominee for cia director gina haspel, special assistant kelly sadler said, it doesn't matter because he's dying anyway. mccain, who is fighting aggression aggressive brain cancer, was tortured while he was a prisoner during the vietnam war. haspel oversaw it. following the report, mccain's wife tweeted, may i remind you my husband has a family, seven children and five grandchildren. sadler called mccain's daughter to apologize, according to "the hill." experts in hawaii say the kilauea volcano could experience a massive explosion within days. nothing is certain, but they fear the blast could send massive boulders into the air, endangering lives and property. because of the potential danger,

hawaii's volcano national park is closed today. carter evans is in hawaii and haas our report. >> reporter: geologists are warning a possible explosion at the summit of kilauea could be the largest in nearly 100 years, hurling boulders the size of refrigerato refrigerators. the heavy clouds of smoke coming from the main crater were likely triggered from a rock fall from the walls. as the lava level inside the volcano drained lower, the danger of an eruption can actually increase. when the molten rock reaches groundwater levels, pressurized steam can create an explosion, spewing rocks and ash miles from the crater. further down, the underground lava oozing from the cracks of leilani estates is only a half mile away from a geothermal power plant. it's shut down. workers trucked away 60,000 gallons of liquid from the area.

him after the baby became unresponsive. the officer tried cpr before rushing him to a nearby hospital. he regained consciousness and is expected to make a full recovery. doctors say the officer's quick action saved the boy. the suspected golden state killer faces more murder charges, and at&t's connection to lawyer michael cohen. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. documents reveal it paid president's personal attorney michael cohen $600,000 for advice on its proposed merger with time warner. the deal was reportedly struck three days after the president was sworn into office. mr. trump said he was against the deal. cohen's deal with at&t was first revealed earlier this week, but the new documents allegedly provide further detail about the scope of his work. nok's "the news observer" reports on video showing a white

officer choking and pinning a black man to the ground at the waffle house. a north carolina police officer can be seen violently arrested 22-year-old anthony wall last week. he had just taken his teenage sister to prom. he was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly contact for arguing with waffle house employees. police are investigating. the sacrament bee says the suspect known as the golden state killer and east area ra rainest faces four new murder charges. dave deangelo was earlier charged with eight counts of muscular dystrophies. he's suspected of a series of killings and rapes in california in 1970 and 1981. straight ahead, a yellow substance seen spewing into the sky threatens an oklahoma community. substance seen spewing into the sky threatens an oklahoma community. alice is living with metastatic breast cancer, which is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of her body.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. well, there was quite a mess to clean up in oklahoma city after a sunoco pipeline ruptured, sending raw crude oil spewing into the air. hazmat crews were called to the scene yesterday near an oil and gas well. nearby residents say their homes and properties were covered in oil. some reported the fumes burned and made their eyes water. sunoco says the section of the pipeline was isolated and the

area contained. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple's reported credit card deal and a jeep recall. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, wall street looks to finish the week on a high note after two solid days of gains. technology health care companies led the rally yesterday. the dow soared 197 points. the s&p 500 rose 25 points. the nasdaq gained 65 points. chrysler is recalling more than 325,000 older jeeps in north korea. at issue is a suspension problem that could limit driver control and cause a crash. the recall covers liberty suvs from 2004 to 2007 model years. one of the largest gun makers in the u.s. sturm ruger will track and report on gun violence involving its products.

with a unique cavalry. next week member of his regiment will play a major role in his wedding to meghan markle. charlie d'agata has the story. >> reporter: the fabled household cavalry only suits up for the big game, which doesn't get much bigger than the wedding of prince harry and meghan markle, but this time they're sending off a brother in arms. >> we pause not for anyone's day, for it to be mr. wales, an officer i served with, adds an extra factor. >> reporter: mr. wales is prince harry when he joined the regiment in 2006, but the cavalry does much more than parade around palaces. these aren't preparations for the royal wedding. this takes place every day of the year, but the role of the household cavalry goes far beyond shiny hats on a horse.

cavalry never delivers anything less, especially for one of their own. charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. the oldest person in the u.s. has died. 114-year-old delphine gibson of huntingdon, pennsylvania, died on wednesday. she had been living in a nursing home since 2004. when she was 100, she attributed her long life to good food, her faith in god, and her church. the nursing home manager said even though gibson was blind and deaf near the end of her life, she still enjoyed singing and humming songs like "amazing grace." and america's oldest living world war ii vet celebrated his birthday today. he was inducted in 1940, served the south pasting and left the army when the war ended. he said he still enjoys cigars and an occasional whiskey. coming up on "cbs this morning," the royal wedding

our top stories this morning, president trump says his summit with kim jong-un will be a very special moment for world peace. mr. trump and kim are scheduled to meet june 12th in singapore. it would be the first face-to-face north american summit since the end of the korean war. mr. trump thanked kim for releasing three americans the north had been holding captive. and geologists are warning of a possible explosion at hawaii's kilauea volcano within days. the blast could hurl massive rocks into the air. it could also release steam and sulfur dioxide gas. five senior isis leaders have been captured in a joint operation involving iraqi and u.s.-backed syrian forces.

as jeff pegues reports, it's the latest defeat for the extremist group. >> reporter: the isis commander's confessions were broadcast on iraqi television. one by one, the men in yellow jumpsuits and handcuffs admitted to being top islamic state leaders. their capture was the result of an elaborate operation run by iraq and the united states. first came the capture of ismail al eithawi. described as a close aide to baghdadi. u.s. and iraqi forces used an app on the phone to lure the other men into iraq where they were arrested. the iraqi government said information gathering killed others. michael morell is the former

acting director of the cia and a cbs news national security specialist. >> these guys have an understanding of what's happened to isis post caliphate, where the senior leaders are in general, what their plans might be going forward. >> reporter: u.s. officials say isis leadership has been decimated through air strikes and ground operations, but al baghdadi is believed to still be operating on the border between syria and iraq. u.s. officials and iraqis are after al baghdadi. >> it would be a symbol of the defeat of isis and he's a galvanizing force holding the group together. if he went away, it would splinter apart. >> reporter: u.s. officials also view al baghdadi as a tletd because over the last few years he has inspired attacks here in the u.s. for example, in 2015 in the san bernardino attack which killed 14, the shooters pledge their allegiance to the isis leader. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington.
