newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. more protests are expected along the border with gaza. during violent mass protests yesterday, at least 58 palestinians were killed. that includes a baby who died from exposure to teargas according to the gaza health ministry. the palestinians have been demonstrating for weeks. yesterday's violence came as the u.s. opened a controversial embassy in jerusalem. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the trump administration insists it remains committed to restarting the israeli-palestinian peace process. as you mentioned, with more than roughly 2,700 injured yesterday, the international community is skeptical. palestinians are holding mass funerals today, part of three days of mourning after dozens were killed in protests with israeli troops. 40,000 people showed up to the gaza border monday, continuing weeks of protests over a new u.s. embassy in jerusalem as

well as a blockade by israel and egypt. they set fires and threw firebombs and stones across the border into israel. israeli soldiers fired back and dropped teargas canisters from drones. 70 miles away, the united states was celebrating the new embassy. the event made little reference to what was happening in gaza, but white house senior adviser jared kushner did talk about finding peace between israel and palestinians. >> we believe that it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give so that all people can live in peace safe from danger, free from fear, and able to pursue their dreams. >> reporter: palestinian officials have cut off peace talks with the united states saying they will not accept a deal with the trump administration. and emran el-badawi who teaches middle eastern studies at the university of houston says the embassy move does not help the situation.

>> this really does represent a de facto termination of the so-called peace process. i say so-called because it's been dead for years. >> reporter: the white house blamed hamas, the militant group that controls the gaza strip, for the deadly violence. and we should mention the new u.s. embassy is a temporary location until a larger site that will also be in jerusalem can be found. back to you. >> laura podesta, thank you. tonight on the "cbs evening news," jeff glor interviews israeli prime minister first lady melania trump is resting in good spirits at the walter reed army medical center this morning after undergoing treatment for a benign kidney condition. vice president mike pence said the procedure was long planned. we have details from mola lenghi. mr. president, how is the first lady doing? >> reporter: president trump ignored shouted questions as he went to visit first lady melania trump at walter reed army

medical center late monday. earlier her office revealed mrs. trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney procedure. the procedure was successful, and there were no complications. >> a benign condition could be a benign growth or, less likely it could be a benign collection of blood vessels. >> reporter: doctors say the procedure is used to cut the blood supply to a growth so it shrinks. the exact nature of mrs. trump's condition was not disclosed. the president later tweeted that the first lady was in good spirits. forward to a full recovery. >> we tell patients to expect to be tired for about a week or ten days. they may have low-grade fevers which is your body's inflammatory response reacting to us blocking off the vessels within the mass. >> reporter: mrs. trump's profile has risen in the past several months from planning the first official state dinner to greeting three american hostages at joint base andrews. just last week she launched her "be best" initiative to tackle opioid abuse on social media.

>> i believe we should strive to provide kids with the tools they need to calculate their social and emotional health. >> reporter: the white house says the first lady will remain at walter reed for the rest of the week. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. on hawaii this morning, the latest threat from the kilauea volcano is the dangerous levels of sulphur dioxide. some of the vents were releasing such high levels of the gas that authorities say it poses an immediate threat to anyone nearby. residents are being told to leave the affected area. lava from the affected area has destroyed more than 40 buildings including two dozen homes. and an explosive steam eruption remains a possibility. in california, ten children have been taken from their parents after they described acts of intentional abuse to authorities. police found filthy conditions in the home. a deputy district attorney described what she called torture. jamie yuccas has our report.

>> reporter: this is a look inside the home where the ten children lived. police say it was filthy, and conditions were unsafe. the case started when the couple's 12-year-old son was reported missing back on march 31st. the children's mother, ina rogers, who was arrested for neglect, said she called 911 and later explained the mess. >> that fear sets in like my son might be missing. i ripped up my house. i tore everything out of the closet, lifted up the beds. >> reporter: the boy was not in the house and was found by police in the neighborhood. once officers went inside the home, they became concerned. they discovered nine more children ranging in age from 4 months to 11-years-old, and placed all ten in protective custody. the children's father, jonathan allen, is charged with seven counties of torture and nine counts of abuse. >> the children described incidents of intentional abuse resulting in puncture wounds, burns, bruising, and injuries

consistent with being shot with a pellet gun or a b.b. gun. >> reporter: allegations rogers denies. >> i love my children. my husband loves his children. he does have a lot of tattoos and looks scary. it's very easy to think that he's a monster. but he's not. >> reporter: the mother's out on bail and says her children are currently staying with her mother and sister. as for the father, a judge on monday upped his bail to $5.2 million. jamie yuccas, cbs news, los angeles. the driver of an electric tesla car that slammed into the back of a utah fire truck was using the semi autonomous vehicle at the time. it is the latest accident involving a self-driving car. the driver told police the system was switched on, and she was looking at her phone before the crash friday evening. the car was going 60 miles per hour when it rammed into the fire truck and appeared not to brake before impact. the driver suffered a broken foot. tesla co-founder elon musk tweet

it may be spring, but there was plenty of hail to go around it may be spring, but there was plenty of hail to go around in central colorado yesterday. the hail was several inches deep. there are no reports of significant damage, but if you just planted your garden, this was certainly not good news. then in maryland, lightning set fire to two homes. there were no injuries, but the homes were certainly damaged. we are remembering actress margot kidder. and new health problems for a former senator. the "washington post" reports former senate democratic leader harry reid is recovering after undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer. reid, who is 78, had surgery to remove a tumor yesterday at johns hopkins university in baltimore. his family says he plans to have chemotherapy. republican senator john mccain, who is battling brain cancer, tweeted, "from one cantankerous senator to another, sending my prayers and best wishes to senator reid as he recovers from a successful surgery." dispatch" reports prosecutors dropped a felony invasion of privacy charge against missouri republican governor eric greitens. he was accused of taking a revealing photo of a woman with whom he has acknowledged having an affair. prosecutors say they will re-file the charge and pursue the case. the missouri legislature will convene a special session friday to consider whether to impeach greitens. louisiana's "times picayune" reports a coroner has ruled the death of a black man who died during a struggle last week with white sheriff's deputies was a homicide. more than 100 people took part in a march yesterday in a new orleans suburb to honor 22-year-old keeven robinson. [ chants ] >> authorities say robinson was the target of an undercover drug operation when he spotted detectives. he crashed his car trying to escape and was apprehended during a struggle with deputies.

when you gota go, you gotta go. one call of nature was caught on video at precisely the wrong moment. a michigan man was proposing to his girlfriend in front of a fountain over the weekend. they brought their 3-year-old son. just as the man dropped to one knee to pop the question, the little boy dropped his pants. after the couple kissed, they saw what their son was doing and realized that he had upped them. boy, oh boy. precious memories. meghan markle's father may not be going to his daughter's royal wedding to prince harry on saturday. thomas markle came under fire after reports that he was paid to stage paparazzi photos of him preparing for the wedding. he was supposed to walk his daughter down the aisle. he told a celebrity website tmz he didn't want to embarrass his daughter or the royal family at the wedding. meghan markle's half sister says she's to blame for the photo

our top story this morning -- more protests and dozens of funerals are planned on the gaza strip today. at least 58 people were killed during border demonstrations against israel yesterday, according to gaza health officials. the violence came as the u.s. opened a controversial embassy in jerusalem. palestinian leaders called the violence a massacre. the israelis say they were acting in self-defense. and amid the clashes over the u.s. embassy in jerusalem, there's a place of peace. as jeff glor reports, it's visited each day by people of all religions. ♪ >> reporter: the church of the holy sepulchre is one of the holiest sites in christianity. the faithful believe it's where jesus christ was crucified,
