center may have been intentional. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie. well, improving relations between the u.s. and north korea is being put to the test. this morning north korea is threatening to cancel next month's scheduled summit between president trump and kim jong-un after calling off a high-level meeting with south korea. laura podesta is here in new york with the latest developments. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the threat of cancellation comes from reports that north korea thinks the negotiations will only drive them into a corner, and if the summit doesn't happen, it could be a major blow to president trump's hope to fulfill a campaign promise. north korea says a one-sided demand by the united states to denuclearize may force it to cancel next month's historic meeting between president trump and kim jong-un.

the statement targeted remarks like this one made last month by national security adviser john bolton on cbs's "face the nation." he said north korea should quickly dismantle its nuclear arsenal as libya did 15 years ago. but is it a requirement that kim jong-un agree to give away those weapon before you give any kind of concession? >> i think that's right. i think we're looking at the libya model of 2003/2004. >> it came just hours after north korea abruptly canceled a meeting today with south korean officials. the plan was to discuss the agreement between the two countries to reduce military tensions. south korea's unification ministry called it regrettable. the sudden withdrawal was in response to annual combined south korean and u.s. military drills similar to this one conducted last year. the pentagon calls them routine

and purely defensive. >> they're exercises that are legal, planned well, well in advance. >> the north appeared to show good will last week. three american detainees were released and a promise to dismantle its nuclear site later this month. the white house says it's examining north korea's comments. south korea says it has no plans to stop the military drills which last for two weeks. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. well, cleanup is under way here in the northeast this morning after a fast moving violent storm system left at least five people dead. the wicked weather pummeled an area from the mid-atlantic to new england with pummeling wind, damaging winds, and flooding rain. the violent weather roared into new york state with wind, hail, and rain. at least two people were killed,

hit by falling trees, one of them an 11-year-old girl. in new york, scaffolding went flying. damaging winds sent trees into cars and homes. one young girl said she ran to her room for cover as a tree came crashing down into her home. >> all of a sudden i heard a big crash and the house shook, and i saw the tree and i just started screaming. >> connecticut a disaster was declared in the town of brookfield. at least one person there was killed by a falling tree. roads were impassable. near the nation's capitol, heavy rain produced flash flooding. some areas got over 6 inches. the storm moved up into boston leaving chaos behind. hundreds of thousands lost power and travel was disrupted throughout the region. thousands of commuters were stranded at new york's grand central terminal when train service was disrupted at the heart of the rush hour and hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed.

well, a wet, possibly stor y y pattern will continue over the northeast, but the weather is not expected to be as severe as yesterday's storm. the senate intelligence committee is expected to vote today to recommend that the full senate confirmed gina haspel as the next direct over the cia. haspel's nomination has faced tough scrutiny following a detention excite in thailand where prisoners were tortured. haspel said that was not a program cia should have undertaken. haspel's confirmation appears likely with five democrats announcing their support. and a federal judge rules special counsel robert mueller has the authority to prosecute former trump campaign chairman paul manafort. it's a legal setback for manafort who's fighting charges of money laundering, conspiracy, and acting as an unregistered agent. a spokesman says manafort maintains his innocence.

an aviation alert has been issued for air routes near hawaii's kilauea volcano. the nearly continuous emission of ash and volcanic smog now rises some 12,000 feet high above the crater on the big island. the volcanic ash is the latest for the residents. a shift of wind is expected to move the ash inland. they warn eruptions could be more violent at any time. and gaza is reeling from a week of violence while israel is defending its use of deadly force. at least 60 palestinians have been killed in mass protest this week coinciding with the opening of a new u.s. embassy in jerusalem and the formation of israel seven years ago. it blames hamas for instigating the unrest.

holly williams is in gaza. >> reporter: then no strangers to blood shed in war-torn gaza, they buried their dead yet again. several of them with children, according to palestinian officials. in gaza's hospitals are the survivors, some of them also teenagers, like wasim rajab, 16, with a bullet lodged in his foot, and tarik ayash hit with a bullet in the face. at al awda hospital, dr. ghassan abu-sitta treats survivors. that will he walk again? >> he would walk with a limp most likely. >> for the rest of his life? >> yeah. >> reporter: while many of the palestinian protesters were peaceful, we saw some throwing rocks and fire and others throwing grenades and pipe

bombs. and this released video shows palestinians attempting to breach the border fence. israel claims at least 24 of those killed were terrorists. the u.s. like israel blames the violence on hamas, the militant group that controls the gaza strip. >> no country in this chamber would act with more restraint than israel has. >> reporter: but others including some u.s. allies and united nations officials have criticized israel for what they say was a disproportionate use of force. holly williams, cbs news, gaza. investigators in southern california say a deadly explosion at a medical office building may have been intentional. the massive blast in aliso viejo blew siding off the walls while patients were inside the facility yesterday. one woman died and three others were injured. a witness described the horrific aftermath.

he allegedly touched female students inappropriately and made racial comments to his parents. the school didn't report tyndall to authorities. the usc said it was under no obligation to report tyndall but in hindsight it should have. in 2016 he resigned. the "miami herald" said the parents of two teenagers who were killed in the parkland shooting are running for seats on the county school board. ryan petty and lori alhadeff want to run and improve safety. 17 people were killed in the valentine's day massacre at marjory stoneman douglas high school. and the withdrawally, north carolina, "news & observer" say teachers plan to protest at the state capitol. they plan to skip school and demonstrate for higher wages and more school funding.

he was 88. vladimir duthiers reflects on wolfe's legacy. >> these are the men who had the right stuff. >> reporter: they are perhaps the three most famous words wolfe wrote to describe the astronauts for the 1979 book that went on to become a box office hit. tom wolfe began his career in newspapers and then moved on to magazines where he helped pioneer the new journalism movement by using fact reporting using a first-person literary style as he explained to jeff glor in 2016. >> it drove me crazy in "the right stuff" about the astronauts. i wasn't on board and a lot of conversation i missed. >> reporter: his first novel was a bestseller that also became a movie, a satire about an ambitious wall streeter that touched on issues of class, race, and wealth in new york city. wolfe called this technique a kind of voyeurism.

our top story this morning, north korea is threatened to s cancel next week's highly anticipated summit between president trump and kim jong-un. north korea accuses the trump administration for making one-sided demands for north korea's disarmament. it follows their abrupt talks with south korea on wednesday. and at least five people have been killed by a violent storm system that moved through the northeast. two people were killed by falling trees in new york state. one was an 11-year-old girl. hundreds of thousands lost power. travel was disrupted throughout the region. well, for the second time in a month, someone was sucked halfway out of a jetliner in midair.

this time it was the co-pilot. crew members were able to pull him back inside, but the terrifying ordeal was not over. here's kris van cleave. >> reporter: cellphone video appears to show cracks across the windshield of the chinese cockpit while in flight. moments later the window would shatter. the first officer was sucked out and pulled back in. he suffered injuries to the face and waist. it was at about 30,000 feet when it happened. passenger oxygen masks deployed and the captain diverted the plane to the closest airport. this passenger says he heard a bang and the plane dropped sharply for four or five seconds and the lights went out. he said there was chaos in the cabin before the flight crew told the 114 passengers on board not to panic. they were able to land despite the captain not being able to

hear the air traffic controller because of the noise from the window. last month an engine failure on this southwest jet sent debris into a window. passenger jennifer riordan was half sucked out of the window and died. >> to be sucked out and have a first officer then be partially sucked out the window and still be able to land the airplane safely is an amazing piece of airmanship. >> reporter: cockpit windshields have multiple layers, so typically if one cracks, the entire thing doesn't shatter. the last time anyone can point to a situation like this one where a pilot was partially sucked out of a window due to a shattered window was due to a maintenance error on british airways in 1990. the pilot survived. kris van cleave, cbs news, detroit.
