into the ruling class. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a new financial disclosure from president trump shows he reimbursed his former lawyer michael cohen up to $250,000 for expenses related to the 2016 presidential campaign. now, the payment is raising questions about a possible link to hush money paid to an adult film star. laura podesta is here in new york with the details. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the president's attorney rudy giuliani says the payment mr. trump paid to an attorney that eventually went to porn star daniels is not a liability, but the justice department still has the option to look into it because that reimbursement may have broken campaign finance laws. a footnote within a 92-page financial disclosure form shows

president trump repaid his former attorney michael cohen as much as 2$250 thousand for expenses in 2016. >> i don't think it has to be disclosed at all because it was an expenditure that was reimbursed. >> rudy giuliani, president trump's attorney, told fox news it was done out of an abundance of caution. >> the president disclosed everything he could disclose. he can't disclose more than he knows. we think it vindicates our original strategy. it also vindicates the fact that mueller should now bring it to a close. >> the office of government ethics which released the disclosure form sent a letter to deputy attorney general rod rosenstein flagging the update in case it was relevant to any inquiry the justice department may be pursuing. >> to me it means the office of government ethics believes there's a potential crime and it should be investigated.

>> cohen said he used $130,000 to pay adult film star stormy daniels days before the election to keep her silent about her alleged affair with mr. trump. sources tell cbs news the justice department could look into whether the daniels payment should have been diggs closed under campaign finance laws, but at this time, there's no evidence there's an active investigation into the president. the legal opinion at the justice department is that a sitting president cannot be indicted. giuliani says mueller told him he would abide by that opinion and mueller's boss and deputy attorney general rod rosenstein indicated he would do the same. anne-marie? >> laura podesta, thank you. now that contradicts an earlier report by the republicans on the house intelligence committee. transcripts were released yesterday of donald trump's jr.'s closed door interview with the senate judiciary committee last year. they show he did not think there

was a problem with meeting a russian lawyer at trump tower in 2016 to get dirt on hillary clinton. this contrasts his original claim that the meeting was about a russian adoption. south korea is trying to reset its high-level talks with north korea. it also wants to mediate a jeopardized summit between president trump and kim jong-un. yesterday north korea accused the trump administration of making one-sided demands in exchange for nuclear disarmament. south korea says it wants to bridge the gap between washington and pyongyang. the white house says president trump is still prepared to meet. michigan state university has agreed to a $500 million settlement to hundreds of sexual assault victims on former sports doctor larry nassar. under the agreement the 332 women and girls will be paid $425 million, and $75 million will be set aside for future claims. the former team doctor for usa

gymnastics pleaded guilty to molesting his victims under the guise of treatment. nassar is serving three prison sentences. a school resource officer is being called a hero for helping stop a shooter at an illinois high school. police say police officer mark dallas shot the gunman after he opened fire in the hallway of dixon high school yesterday. 19-year-old matthew milby had been shot. his mother says he was ostracized after getting in trouble with drugs. >> there's no justification for what he's done and he will take full responsibility for that. >> milby had reportedly been expelled from the school. the shooting broke out as seniors were practicing for their graduation ceremony. earthquakes rocked hawaii's big island as residents face new ash clouds spewing from the kilauea volcano. and the national guard is on alert for more possible evacuations. david begnaud is on the big island. >> reporter: it is jarring and

spectacular. the largest ash cloud is the latest in the kilauea hazard. talk abo golfers seem oblivious to a 12,000-foot plume from a volcano that's capable of a whole lot more. scientists say this is not the big one they were predicting, but it is relieving pressure on kilauea. it's been nearly two weeks since the lava began oozing out, piercing through the ground in a two-mile trail of fissures fluctuating in intensity. these blue flames indicate the potential for explosive gases, adding to the danger brought on by the lava, which has turned dozens of homes in the lush liana estate section into rubble. it's still too risky for homeowners to return. we found one who has never lost. scott wigger says he's been videotaping the destruction, documenting it for his neighbors to maybe file insurance claims. >> it's hard to imagine, but
