into the ruling class. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a new financial disclosure from president trump shows he reimbursed his former lawyer michael cohen up to $250,000 for expenses related to the 2016 presidential campaign. now, the payment is raising questions about a possible link to hush money paid to an adult film star. laura podesta is here in new york with the details. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the president's attorney rudy giuliani says the payment mr. trump paid to an attorney that eventually went to porn star daniels is not a liability, but the justice department still has the option to look into it because that reimbursement may have broken campaign finance laws. a footnote within a 92-page financial disclosure form shows

president trump repaid his former attorney michael cohen as much as 2$250 thousand for expenses in 2016. >> i don't think it has to be disclosed at all because it was an expenditure that was reimbursed. >> rudy giuliani, president trump's attorney, told fox news it was done out of an abundance of caution. >> the president disclosed everything he could disclose. he can't disclose more than he knows. we think it vindicates our original strategy. it also vindicates the fact that mueller should now bring it to a close. >> the office of government ethics which released the disclosure form sent a letter to deputy attorney general rod rosenstein flagging the update in case it was relevant to any inquiry the justice department may be pursuing. >> to me it means the office of government ethics believes there's a potential crime and it should be investigated.

>> cohen said he used $130,000 to pay adult film star stormy daniels days before the election to keep her silent about her alleged affair with mr. trump. sources tell cbs news the justice department could look into whether the daniels payment should have been diggs closed under campaign finance laws, but at this time, there's no evidence there's an active investigation into the president. the legal opinion at the justice department is that a sitting president cannot be indicted. giuliani says mueller told him he would abide by that opinion and mueller's boss and deputy attorney general rod rosenstein indicated he would do the same. anne-marie? >> laura podesta, thank you. now that contradicts an earlier report by the republicans on the house intelligence committee. transcripts were released yesterday of donald trump's jr.'s closed door interview with the senate judiciary committee last year. they show he did not think there

was a problem with meeting a russian lawyer at trump tower in 2016 to get dirt on hillary clinton. this contrasts his original claim that the meeting was about a russian adoption. south korea is trying to reset its high-level talks with north korea. it also wants to mediate a jeopardized summit between president trump and kim jong-un. yesterday north korea accused the trump administration of making one-sided demands in exchange for nuclear disarmament. south korea says it wants to bridge the gap between washington and pyongyang. the white house says president trump is still prepared to meet. michigan state university has agreed to a $500 million settlement to hundreds of sexual assault victims on former sports doctor larry nassar. under the agreement the 332 women and girls will be paid $425 million, and $75 million will be set aside for future claims. the former team doctor for usa

gymnastics pleaded guilty to molesting his victims under the guise of treatment. nassar is serving three prison sentences. a school resource officer is being called a hero for helping stop a shooter at an illinois high school. police say police officer mark dallas shot the gunman after he opened fire in the hallway of dixon high school yesterday. 19-year-old matthew milby had been shot. his mother says he was ostracized after getting in trouble with drugs. >> there's no justification for what he's done and he will take full responsibility for that. >> milby had reportedly been expelled from the school. the shooting broke out as seniors were practicing for their graduation ceremony. earthquakes rocked hawaii's big island as residents face new ash clouds spewing from the kilauea volcano. and the national guard is on alert for more possible evacuations. david begnaud is on the big island. >> reporter: it is jarring and

spectacular. the largest ash cloud is the latest in the kilauea hazard. talk abo golfers seem oblivious to a 12,000-foot plume from a volcano that's capable of a whole lot more. scientists say this is not the big one they were predicting, but it is relieving pressure on kilauea. it's been nearly two weeks since the lava began oozing out, piercing through the ground in a two-mile trail of fissures fluctuating in intensity. these blue flames indicate the potential for explosive gases, adding to the danger brought on by the lava, which has turned dozens of homes in the lush liana estate section into rubble. it's still too risky for homeowners to return. we found one who has never lost. scott wigger says he's been videotaping the destruction, documenting it for his neighbors to maybe file insurance claims. >> it's hard to imagine, but

when i was here, all of that lava was not there. it is just so devastating. >> reporter: david begnaud, cbs news outside volcano national park in hawaii. the royal wedding of prince harry and meghan markle is just two days away. this is windsor castle. the couple will tie the knot within the castle inside st. georges chapel. when pregmeghan markle marries prince, she won't be the first american to become a royal. teri okita looks at some other women who have gone from u.s. citizen to your royal highness. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. several american women and even one american man have married into the royal ranks of matrimony. u.s. banks investor christopher o'neill married a royal. now for meghan markle, this will be for the former actress the

biggest role she's ever played. windsor castle is putting the final touches on a fairy tale wedding. millions around the world are expected to tune in when the american actress and prince harry say i do. but markle isn't the first woman to go from hollywood to her royal highness. >> how do you feel on this occasion? >> needless to say, i'm very, very happy. >> reporter: in 1956 grace kelly married prince rainier. she blossomed from academy award-winning actress to princess grace, but it wasn't easy. >> she went through some awkward years getting the people in monaco to accept her. >> reporter: but accept her they did. and uk royal watchers expect the prince will do the same for markle. >> young people love her. she's cookie, she's original, she's fancy. >> reporter: markle joins a short list of americans who found their royal match.

lee radizwill also did. marie-chantal is princess of grease and last fall ariana austin also. king edward viii abdicated the throne to marry the twice divorced wallis-simpson who was never very much liked by the royals. markle will embrace a different monarchy, one that is embracing change and diversity. in about two hours the official preparations for the weekend will be getting under way. the palace will be rehearsing the horse and carriage procession which will be carrying the newlyweds around windsor on saturday. anne-marie? >> teri okita in windsor. england. thank you so much, teri. and "cbs this morning" will be live at the royal wedding.

children rescued from a home were subject to torture, including waterboarding and being shot with cross beaus. the house was littered with trash. they range in age from 4 months to 12 years. their mother was charged yesterday with child abuse. the father is facing multiple charges of abuse and torture. the "orange county register" reports a woman killed by an explosion in an office building in southern california was the owner of a day spa. authorities declined to say if 48-year-old ildiko krajnyak was the intended target. they say tuesday's explosion was not an accident. two people were injured. no arrests were made. photos of a kent state university student on campus with an ark-10 semiautomatic rifle slung over her shoulder has become an internet sensation.

she wanted to make a statement after graduating. school policy prevents students from carrying guns on the grounds, but guests to the university may carry guns. another video sensation. a video of a man threatening to call immigration officials. >> i take your welcome. >> the video was taken on tuesday. the man is reported to be a 42-year-old attorney named aaron schlossberg. he threatened to call i.c.e. to have the spanish-speaking employees be deported. he's heard telling a restaurant manager that the staff should be speaking english. and "the hill" reports u.s. surgeon general jerome adams came to the aid of a passenger on a delta air lines flight. the passenger was having a medical emergency when the call went out for a doctor. the department of health and human services says adams and two nurses responded to a person who had lost consciousness. adams tweeted the patient was doing well and he was happy to

push to revive net neutrality and walmart partners with an upscale department store. hena doba is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. the senate passioned a measure to restore net neutrality rules. the legislation backed by 49 democrats and three republicans would rescind the fcc's recent deregulation with how internet service providers control content. the republican-controlled house is not expected to take up the measure. u.s. stocks made solid gains on wednesday after suffering losses earlier this week. technology and health care companies drove the rebound. small company stocks also faired well. the dow jones climbed 62 points. the s&p was up 11 points. the nasdaq climbed 46 points. macy's is making a strong comeback. the department store giant surpassed earnings expectations in its first quarter this year. sales were up more than 4%. shares surged nearly 11%. the retailer is under pressure

from online shopping, but it has taken steps to reinvent itself such as expanding store label brands, reassessing marketing strategies, and updating technology. ford is resuming production of its f-150 truck, america's best selling vehicle. a fire at a plant on may 2nd caused a parts shortage and forced a shutdown. they temporarily laid off thousands of employees. ford says they'll restart work friday at the dearborn truck plant in michigan. walmart is teaming up with lord & taylor to target more affluent. the big box store is launching its new site. the new site is scheduled to roll out in the next few weeks. walmart will separate the new shop from its existing merchandise with tabs labeled

nearly two dozen more cases of food poisoning linked to tainted romaine lettuce have been reported. the lettuce was grown in yuma, arizona, and was last harvested on april 16th. health officials say it should no longer be in stores or restaurants because of its three-week shelf life, but the number of people sickened is up to 172 spread out across 32 states. at least 75 people have been hospitalized and one person died in california. and a florida 7-eleven has come up with a melodic way to try to keep would-be thieves and panhandlers away. ♪ the convenience store is blasting opera and classical music on outdoor speakers. police say there have been more than two dozen assaults, burglaries and thefts in the last month. the music is part of a 7-eleven program that encourages nonconfrontational methods the
