plus, what the future holds for the royal newlyweds. this is the "cbs weekend news." >> dahler: good evening, i'm don dahler. they are among the latest victims of a national plague of gun violence. eight students and two teachers- - all killed yesterday at santa fe high school in texas. they ranged in age from 15 to 67 years old. their stories, in a moment. police say the 17-year-old gunman confessed to the killings, and said he spared the lives of students he liked so they could tell his story. the school-- 30 miles southeast of houston-- remains a crime scene. students and staffers were allowed today to pick up their cars and belongings left behind in the chaos. omar villfranca is there. >> reporter: this is the first time the public has seen suspected shooter dimitrios pagourtzis since the deadly rampage at his high school. the 17-year-old was barely

audible over the close circuit tv feed as he responded to questions. >> are you a citizens of the united states? >> yes, sir. s> reporter: his demeanor is a stark contrast from the terror of friday morning. ing.stigators say pagourtzis was dressed in a dark trench coat dd students say he said "surprise" before he started erring rounds from a shotgun and a .38 caliber pistol. eight students and two teachers were killed. 13 others were wounded. tzurt documents show that clgourtzis surrendered to police outside the classroom, and told them, "he did not shoot students he did like so he could have his story told." nicholas poehl is pagourtzis' attorney. >> there are questions about competency and things like that that are at the beginnings of the stage. and-- a long way to go. >> reporter: the pagourtzis family released a statement today, which says in part, "we extend our most heart felt prayers and condolences to all victims.

what we have learned if media reports seems incompatible with ine boy we love." officer john barnes also has a long way to go in recovery. the 49-year old school resource officer was shot after he confronted the suspect. santa fe i.s.d. police chief walter braun says despite the horror, his officers are or, lient. >> officers went in there and icd what they could. this is what they train for. went in immediately and it's a tragic event for everybody involved. >> reporter: barnes was a houston police officer for more yban 20 years and retired from the force earlier this year. houston police chief art acevedo visited barnes and says the father is slowly recovering. do you think officer barnes saved lives? >> oh, absolutely. him and everybody that responded, they responded quickly they engaged quickly. i just thank god that they were there. the assistant chief saved his hefe. returning fire and dragging him out and applying a tourniquet.

>> reporter: classes here at santa fe high school will be cancelled on monday and tuesday, but grief counselors will be here to help students and families. don? >> don dahler: it is becoming a grim ritual-- another american grwn shattered by gun violence is honoring the dead holding ungils, and trying to heal physical and emotional wounds. carter evans is there with the victims' stories. ♪ i once was lost >> reporter: facing the devastating loss of ten of their own, this is a community in shock-- still trying to comprehend the massacre in a friday morning art class. ayeanna quintanilla watched helplessly as the shooter appeared at the door. >> next thing you know you hear gunshots going off, saying that if you all move i'm gonna shoot y'all. as i was getting up to run toward the back door he was aiming at me and he didn't-- he missed me, but it went ahead and bme back and ricocheted. >> reporter: she was treated for a bullet wound to the leg. did he seem like he was aiming for anyone in particular?

>> um, when he first walked in, he pointed at one person and said, "i'm gonna kill you." >> reporter: in all, 23 were wounded, ten fatally. including the art teacher, cynthia tysdale, and mother of four and grandmother who was a substitute teacher that day. and sabika sheikh a 17-year-old exchange student from pakistan. >> he started shooting through and that's when i got hit. >> reporter: abel san miguel was one of the ten wounded. he watched as his friends were gunned down-- 17- year-old chris stone, a football-playing cowboys fan who attended prom last week, and 15- year-old kyle mcleod. >> he started shooting through the wooden part of the door. and that's when chris got hit. and then he opened the door after he reloaded his weapon and started shooting kyle. >> reporter: at a vigil for the victims last night, thousands turned out. this tragedy has touched just about everyone in this small community. n i'm really blessed and happy to say that i got to make it rme to my family. >> reporter: there were a lot of people in that class who didn't.

>> yeah, there was a lot, i've had a lot of multiple close friends that didn't make it out thd have passed. >> reporter: the survivors were taken to multiple hospitals in the area including this one where a blood drive is under way right now. tos a way for the community to directly help the victims. some of whom lost a lot of blood. don? >> dahler: carter, thank you. n.f.l. star j.j. watt is stepping up again to help victims of a texas tragedy. watt, of the houston texans, has offered to pay funeral expenses tr the santa fe school shooting victims. after hurricane harvey devastated the houston area last iaar, watt used social media to raise more than $37-million for storm victims. partly in search of much-needed atod news, many were up before sunrise to watch the royal wedding-- and it delivered in fairytale fashion. an american actress became a real-life princess bride, and roxana saberi is there. >> dahler: on hawaii's big osland, there was another explosion from the kilauea volcano overnight, and fast- moving lava triggered more evacuations from the eruption zone. mark strassmann is there. >> reporter: fiery lava continued its unrelenting march. a new, fast-moving flow crossed a major roadway, and rolled toward the ocean roughly two miles away. four stranded residents had to be airlifted out by the national guard. the same lava flow swallowed aft home in minutes. even after two weeks, the volcanic images continue to astonish. officials here are pleading with folks to heed evacuation orders. >> we can't force them, we can't force anybody, we're just highly recommending for your safety and the safety of first responders to please evacuate. >> stuck in leilani estates--

>> dahler: dramatic new video shows a thick plume of black smoke rising into the air moments after cuba's worst air disaster in three decades. a boeing 737-- nearly 40 years old-- crashed and burned shortly after takeoff yesterday from havana. it was headed to eastern cuba with 110 people on board. three women survived. they are in grave condition. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a frightening sight this morning in alexandria, virginia outside washington. a rail bridge partially collapsed, forcing a freight train off the tracks. 30 train cars derailed. remarkably, no one was hurt. the train was not carrying hazardous cargo. officials are looking into what caused the bridge to buckle. test is is ♪ is well justified. he won the preekness stakes in baltimore.
