57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, classes at all santa fe, texas, schools are canceled today and tomorrow in the wake of a shooting that left ten people dead. and the governor greg abbott is calling for a moment of silence to honor the victims later this morning. the suspect dimitrios pagourtzis is charged with capital murder. his family is as shocked and confused as anyone. ♪ amazing grace a vigil was held last night as officials try to figure out the attack. oh nar villafranca reports from santa fe. >> reporter: two days after a gunman shot eight students and two teachers aet a high school,

17-year-old sabika sheikh was remembered in a service at a mosque near houston. her body is being returned to her family in karachi for burial. this tragedy has renewed the national debate over gun control. on facebook police chief art acevedo has expressed frustration and admits they've hit rock bottom. >> people on the state level and other levels are not doing anything other than offering prayers. >> reporter: senator mark warner urged his colleagues to do something. >> we're the only nation in the world that has this many guns awash in our society and consequently we have more of these tragedies than any other nation around. >> reporter: texas's republican lieutenant glonch wants to harden schools. >> we need our teachers to be armed. when you're facing someone who's an active shooter, the best way to take a shooter down is with a gun, but even better than that is four to five guns to one.

>> reporter: 17-year-old gunman dimitrios pagourtzis remains in jail. omar villafranca, cbs news, santa fe, texas. well, santa fe high school baseball players decided to go ahead with the playoff game saturday night. they decided to remember the victims in a moment of silence. two teammates in the attack suited up for the game. large crowd showed up, many showing santa fe high school t-shirts. the incoming president of the national rifle association oliver north blames the attacks on what he calls a cultural violence. north pushed back against calls for more gun control. >> the problem that we've got is we're trying like the dickens to treat the symptom without treating the disease, and the disease in this case isn't the second amendment. the disease is youngsters who

are steeped in a cultural violence. they've been drugged in many cases. >> north said part of the solution is tougher school security. at last night billboard music awards, students from marjorie douglas stoneman high school performed. ♪ you can't take my youth away you can't take my youth away ♪ >> a gunman killed 17 people at the parkland florida high school on valentine's day. that attack renewed efforts for gun control in this country. president trump is demanding that the justice department look into whether the doj or fbi spied on his campaign. the president said it would be a really big deal if the fbi was infiltrating his team. laura podesta is here in new york. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the demand for the investigation came by twitter over the weekend. the president is pointing fingers at the obama

administration and wants to know if anyone in that administration requested to place a mole within the trump campaign. the justice department's watchdog will look into whether the fbi spied on president trump's campaign for inappropriate purposes. the announcement sunday came just hours after the president tweeted that he will officially demand it today. the doj has asked its inspector general to fold the request into an existing probe of possible politicati fbi's investigation of russian interference in the 2016 election. the president made his demand after a full weekend tweeting about the russia investigation, calling it a witch hunt. >> the president and his allies constantly trying to undermine these investigations. if the president's got nothing to hide, let these investigations finish. >> senator mark warner says he's not seen any evidence of political motivation by the fbi.

according to the "associated press," on sunday evening, president trump's lawyer rudy giuliani says special counsel robert mueller's investigation could be ore by september 1st if the president agrees to an interview in july. lindsey graham says the investigation must be done by the book. >> i intend on letting mr. mueller do his job, but i want to make sure the fbi and the department of justice did not try in their own way to change the outcome of the election. >> mueller's office has not commented on giuliani's claim. and last week marked one year since robert mueller began his investigation into the russian meddling in the 2016 election. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. this morning gina haspel will be sworn in as the director of the cia. haspel, a vets ran spy, will be the agency's first female director. president trump plans to attend her swearing in. she won the senate confirmation

despite concerns about her role in using interrogation torture techniques. this morning there's a new danger from hawaii's kilauea volcano. lava flows are pouring into the sea and that creates a hazardous cloud of laze or lava haze. the cloud is laced with hydrochloric acid and glass part calls that can irtaritate the eyes. some residents have now been out of their homes for more than two weeks and it's not clear when the lava threat will end. wildlife officials in oregon are trying to figure out what triggered the first fatal cougar attack there in nearly 94 years. the lion attacked two bikers. initially the bikers were able to fend off the big cat and he ran back into the woods but the cougar was not through. >> when suddenly the victim who's now in harborview was attacked again by this cougar, it latched onto him and latched onto his head. he said his whole entire head in

a cardinals reliever throws fast pitches for the deadly books, and a deadly car crash in north carolina. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the charlotte observer" says a father was arrested after police say he crashed his car into a restaurant, killing his daughter and daughter-in-law and injuring other family members. investigators say robert self intentionally rammed his vehicle into a surf and turf restaurant yesterday while his family was eating lunch. his wife, son, and granddaughter were injured. there's no word on a motive. maine's "press herald" reports former president george h.w. bush arrived yesterday. well-wishers lined the street to greet him as he passed through. he waved back. the bushes have spent summers in maine since the 1940s. this will be the first one for mr. bush without his wife barbara who died last month. britain's "guardian" reports

an experimental ebola vaccine is being administered today in the city of the democratic republic of congo. the deadly virus spread to mbandaka. 26 people have died, but only one in the city. health officials say the risk of spreading is very high and could move into neighboring countries. and "usa today" reports cardinals reliever jordan hicks tied the record for the fastest pitch thrown in major league history. hicks threw two pitches at 105 miles an hour. two of the philadelphia phillies, odubel herrera, the first fastball was way outside. the second one was fouled off. hicks also threw 104-mile-per-hour pitches in the game. those are the five fastest pitches in the big leagues this year. still to come, no purchase, no problem. coffee giant starbucks offers a friendly new policy for all of

and more. good morning, diane. good morning, anne-marie. well, u.s. stock futures are higher this morning following word the trade war with china is on hold. the u.s. and china have agreed to drop tariff threats as they agree on a deal. the goal is to set up a trade deal for trade imbalances in the future. stocks posted modest weekly declines last week as investors kept close tabs on the uncertain trade negotiations between china and the u.s. meantime electric carmaker tesla is coming up with a high-performance upgrade for its model 3 with a higher price tag. there are two. both have dual motors. the performance version will cost $78,000 and have a top speed of 155 miles per hour. tesla says it will go from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds. its range will be about 310 miles per charge. the new versions of the model 3

are expected to begin delivery starting in july. starbucks has a new policies, allowing anyone to sit in its cafe or use its restrooms even if they don't buy anything. the policy change comes five weeks after two black men had not bought anything while waiting for a friend were arrested at a philadelphia starbucks. starbucks has now told its workers anyone who walks through the store should be treated as a customer. and "deadpool 2" knocked the "avengers" off the top spot at the box office. "deadpool 2" brought in an estimated $125 million in ticket sales over the weekend. it is the second highest opening ever for an r-rating movie.
