facial recognition software to police, and that's raising red flags for privacy advocates. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump says there's a very substantial chance his summit with north korean leader kim jong-un will be delayed. the president met with the leader of south korea yesterday who says the fate and feature of the korean peninsula hinges on this summit. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning, laura. good morning. south korea's president moon jae-in is trying to push ahead for the summit. so is secretary of state mike pompeo who says, we're driving on. he's appearing today before the house foreign affairs committee. >> it has a chance to be a great, great meeting for north korea and a great meeting for the world. if it doesn't happen, maybe it will happen later. >> last week north korea threatened to abandon the sit-down in singapore.

the country blamed a one-sided demand by the u.s. to give up its nuclear weapons. though president trump assured kim the u.s. would not seek a regime change if a deal to dismantle nuclear weapons was reached. >> i will guarantee his safety, yes. >> still, the president and members of his administration are hedging on whether the summit will actually take place. >> i'm not a betting man, so i wouldn't care to predict whether it will happen. >> if it doesn't happen, that's okay too. maybe it won't happen on june 12th. it will happen on a later date. >> south korean president moon jae-in conveyed the summit's importance when meeting with the president on tuesday. an official placed the likelihood of the summit at 99.99%. so the fate of the sum mate may come down to the very last minute.

secretary of state mike pompeo has said this could be something that comes right to the end and doesn't happen. anne-marie. >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. well, as early as today, north korea says it will begin dismantling its nuclear test site. if the north carries through, it would appear to be a significant concession before the skedsualed summit with president trump. four reporters including south korean journalists have been invited to chronicle the event. critics say it's not a real concession because satellite images show the regime has already begun dismantling the site. tomorrow the white house will get information on the russian investigation. they negotiated for it. they're reporting on an fbi source who reportedly infiltrated the trump campaign. >> if they had spies during my campaign for political purposes, that would be unprecedented in the history of the country. >> no white house staffers or

democrats will attend tomorrow's meeting. the democrats weren't invited because they didn't request information, but they say the briefing should be bipartisan. overnight a truck carrying at least 80 undocumented immigrants was stopped in southern texas near raymondville. they were discovered inside the tractor trailer during a traffic stop. there are no reports of any injuries though. now to hawaii, where scientists say poisonous sulphur dioxide emissions from the kilauea volcano have more than doubled since the big eruption began last month. meanwhilests are under way to close off a geothermal plant. >> a rogue lava flow is pulling on the edge of a 300 geothermal plant. if that lava breaches one of the plant's three pressurized wells,

it could unleash hydrogen sulfite, a toxic flammable gas. workers have quenched two of those wells, filled them with cold watewater, and sealed themt the final one has resisted treatment. >> we erie actually monitoring and keeping plant personnel 24/7 around the clock. >> reporter: that lava has now crept within 200 yards of the nearest well. this is fissure 22 behind me, the most volatile and damaging on the island. it has been spewing lava for the last couple of days. you can see it shooting to the sky. all of this lava that has pushed its way 2 1/2 miles to the ocean. several fissures reignited. six of them are now active. national guard major jeff hickman. >> people maybe haven't had a lava threat, but now they have, and there are multiple issues. >> reporter: those issues include new lava that's hotter,

faster moving, and more unpredictable, and a crisis that can last deep into the summer. state officials are reviewing evacuation plans. another 2,000 people in the lower puna district may have to go. mark strassman, cbs news on the big island. atlanta lawyer stacey abrams has a chance to become the first african-american female governor in u.s. history. she won georgia, one of four states to hold position yesterday. brams, a former state assembly leader easily beat stacey evans. this way to treat them is to attract young white voters who haven't voted. they'll meet in a runoff in july. well, texas democrats chose former dallas county sheriff lupe valdez. to run for governor. she's the first openly guy and

latina nominee. also three runoffs that can determine whether democrats can take control of the house in november. women were nominated and black man in the third. all will face white male republicans. two of the three inmates who escaped from a south carolina prison are now back in custody. tyshon johnson was captured yesterday about the 00 mihu 200 from the prison. green charged with murder remains on the loose. it's reported that the driver of the school bus that collided with a dump truck last week in new jersey made an illegal u-turn. a teacher and student were killed. a video show as bus turning into a crossover area used by police for turnarounds. that's according to nj.com. the driver has a history of driver suspensions and speeding

"the baltimore sun" reports a teenager was charged in the murder of the death of a police officer. please call harris a one-teen crime wave. harris was waiting in a stolen jeep on monday while three others burglarized a home. he allegedly ran over a baltimore officer, amy caprio, as she opened fire after confronting him. harris was under house arrest for previous crimes and he was wearing a court ordered ankle bracelet at the time of the incident. 17-year-old gavin grimm claims the gloucester county school violated his rights when it

"usa today" reports today is stormy daniels day in west hollywood, california. she'll be awarded a key to the city. city officials say daniels has proved herself to be a profile in courage in truth to power. the actress claims she had a sexual encounter with donald trump. she's sued to be freed from a nondisclosure agreement. and "the hill" reports a sinkhole developed on the north lawn of the white house. the hole is outside the entrance of the white house briefing room. the sinkhole may have been caused by recent heavy rain. and "sports illustrated" reports the nfl is considering penalties the players kneel during the "national anthem." one reporter proposal calls for home teams to decide whether

the country. ♪ if you're planning to fly this summer, it's going to be crowded. the industry trade group airlines for america put out its summer forecast. airlines are expecting the busiest number in the history of u.s. air travel. it's estimate about 246 passengers will fly on u.s. airlines between june and august. the group points to a strong economy and historically low airfares. >> now on the "cbs moneywatch," rolling back dodd/frank and president trump talks on trade talks. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more.

good morning, diane. good morning, anne-marie. president trump says he isn't pleased with how trade talks are going. it promised to buy more u.s. groups and enter restrictions on foreign ownership. u.s. and china are working on a deal to ease sanctions with communications giant gte. last month they blocked zte which would have put zte out of business. it was accused of violating trade sanctions against iran and north korea. meantime the plan to ease banking regulations is headed to president trump. the dodd/frank law subjected banks to stricter capital and planning requirements. the republicans say it hurt their ability to lend money. it was approved by the senate in march. the bill reduces federal oversight on small to medium-sized bank. cutting banking regulation was a key thing for president trump. here on wall street au automakers rose as they cut

duties on vehicles. however, quarterly reports and others dragged down the market. the dow tumbled 178 points, the s&p 500 lost 8 points, and the nasdaq lost 15 points. mcdonald's has been slapped with a complaint by 15 women. the legal effort was spearheaded by a fight for 15, a consortium that seeks to lower wages. mcdonald's says there's no place for harassment or discrimination of any kind in the workplace. it comes just before the burger giant hold its annual shareholder meeting tomorrow. and privacied a very cats are criticizing the new marketing tool by amazon to release facial recognition to police. the tool is called rekognition. it has the ability to identify people in videos and follow their movements almost instantly. they've asked amazon to stop selling the program to government agencies. anne-marie. >> diane king hall at the new

to our top story this morning, president trump says his scheduled summit with north korean leader kim jong-un may be postponed. the president met with south korean president moon jae-in yesterday. the president said the fate and future hinges on the planned meeting. and lava from the kilauea volcano is threatening a geothermal plant. if it breaches one of the pressure iced walls it could unleash a toxic hydrogen dioxide cloud. they say emissions from the eruption have more than doubled since the activity began.
