good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. for the second time in just under two years a maryland city has been devastated by a flash flood. ellicott city is located about 13 miles west of baltimore. yesterday about 8 inches of rain fell in a six-hour period. the massive rainstorm produced a flash flood that roared through the city yesterday afternoon. cars were submerged or swept down main street. the raging water inundated the first floor of buildings. residents say the flood appeared to be worse than the 2016 flood. the government declared it a state of emergency. >> it appears to be devastating. i'd say it's worse than it was two years ago. they say this is a once every 1,000-year flood, and there have been two in two years.

>> there have been no reports of injuries. search and rescue-crews are going through the downtown area. and now to the gulf coast where subtropical storm alberto is expected to make landfall sometime today. mandatory evacuations have been ordered in some coastal towns along the florida panhandle where life-threatening flash floods are a possibility. laura podesta is here in new york with the latest. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the latest on alberto is still strong. a tropical storm warning is in effect along the entirety of florida's panhandle all the way to the alabama/mississippi state line. storm surges are expected to be as high as four feet in some areas. alberto made its presence known in florida before making landfall. officials say a possible tornado blew this trampoline up onto power lines sunday. >> it was like a whirlwind of

water. >> it was a damp and windy memorial day weekend on the florida gulf coast as the early part of the storm hit. >> trying to get some sun. >> the high winds eventually forced andrea bell off the beach. along the panhandle, businesses have accepted that this unofficial start to summer will be a letdown. >> normally it's a very large weekend. this weekend, it's not going to be such. >> beaches with rough surf and dangerous riptides were closed to the public. and with memories of last year's deadly hurricane season fresh in their minds, many spent the weekend filling sandbags and bracing for the brunt of the storm. >> i'm concerned and i'm listening, and that's all i can do, take it one step at a time. >> forecasters predict alberto will pack sustained winds of 60 miles per hour and in some spots

as 12mp as s chnche i >> the official start for hurricane season is not for a few more days. it begins june 1st. experts are forecasting this year ten to 16 storms will develop with five to nine hurricanes. anne-marie? >> laura podesta, cbs news, new york. thank you, laura. chief meteorologist mike mccall of our tallahassee station is following alberto. >> still tracking alberto based on reconnaissance aircraft sunday evening, w up to 65 miles an houitrhinds moving the northwest. still expected to make landfall along the panhandle coast of florida, somewhere around panama city, perhaps ft. walton beach sometime monday afternoon and then continuing to move off toward the north. and over the weekend will produce rainfall over parts of the ohio valley.

lots of factors going on with alberto. we've got a tropical storm warning along the coast and that means we could see some winds especiallyter c cenloseheto t of perhaps 240 perhaps 60 miles an hour, mainly the gusts. there's a warning of high surf. there's also a high rip current risk. that's the dangerous part. remember the double red flags? on top of that, a possible flash flood watch with 4 to 6 inches of rain a possibility. the rain will continue to spin in at least through monday afternoon and gradually move out of the way by monday. for cbs news, i'm mike mccall. well, this morning former president george h.w. bush is hospitalized in maine. the 93-year-old mr. bush is said to be resting comfortably. demarco morgan has the details.

>> reporter: former president george h.w. bush has ee hospitalized in maine. a spokesperson for the 41st president says he's been hospitalized after experiencing low blood pressure and fatigue. mr. bush met with veterans at a pancake breakfast. the 93-year-old has been battling health problems in recent years. mr. bush was hospitalized for 13 days in april after his wife, former first lady barbara bush, died. he was anxious to travel as soon as he received the medical release to do so. his spokesman said bush is awake and alert and not in any discomfort and says he'll likely remain there for a few days for observation. demarco morgan, cbs news, new york. the on-agn-off-agn summit between president trump and kim jong-un may be on again. president trump withdrew last week but now says it's back on track.

>> reporter: a team was meeting to revive the summit between president trump and kim jong-un that the president canceled thursday. speaking about the summit late saturday night, president trump put june 12th back in his sights. >> it's moving along very nicely, so we're looking at june 12th in singapore. that hasn't changed. it's moving along pretty well. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: south korean president moon jae-in said sunday kim committed. but some lawmakers including some of the president's allies remains skeptical. >> my suspicion remains he's going to try to gets a much release of sanctions as possible without giving up any nuclear weapons and i believe there's going to be a lot of twists and turns along the way.

>> reporter: they make promises if north korea fully denuclearizes, but michael hayden says there's not enough time for the president to prepare. >> i think kim jong-un knows inside and out. i don't know that the president has done the kind of homework that would allow him to do this. >> reporter: while u.s. diplomats continue their talks with the north, kim jong-un and moon jae-in have agreed to meet again on june 1st, and generals from both sides will also meet separately to discuss easing military tensions. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. the u.s. border is changing its story leading up to the death of a young guatemalan girl was shot and killed last week. she was shot last wednesday in texas. she was illegally crossing the border. her family said she was trying to escape poverty and look for work. witnesses say they heard a shot

and saw an officer turn over the body of a young woman. >> she was shot. on this side, she has blood. >> initially the border patrol said its agent was attacked by jeobants armed with blunt ct agen at was ru in allegedly assaulted and does not refer to gonzalez as an assail ant. in hawaii more evacuations were ordered in a residential area due to a fast moving lava flow. meanwhile, lava from the kilauea volcano reached a geothermal power plant yesterday, covering one of the wells that had been capped. but there's no indication that any toxic gas has been released. kilauea erupted three times over the weekend. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll hear from two photographers who have been documenting the lava from the kilaueay volcano, and the pilot who's been helping them take some breathtaking views. and lightning, thousands of strikes disrupting travel and saved by a note.

the skies over london lit up late saturday and earl sunday as thousands of lightning strikes hit the area during a powerful thunderstorm. british meteorologists say there were more than 15,000 strikes across the united kingdom. a london airport said more than 200 flights were delayed after an aircraft's refueling system was damaged by the storm. a new video game is angering the parentsf o pavictims, and controversy over immigrants. the "washington post" reports the u.s. lost track of nearly 1,500 immigrant children in the last three months of last year. the children crossed the border with mexico on their own and were taken into custody. they were placed with adult sponsors in the u.s. last month the department of h

officials say the agency had lost track of them. it's led to criticism from congress and calls on social media asking where the children are. "the new york times" reports china warned two american warships in the south china sea. china said it dispatched warships yesterday to challenge the vessels in the waters near paracel. these are islands off the coast of vietnam. china claims the territory as its own. china says it confronted the american ships and warned them to leave. the ships say they we carrying out maneuvers. the spokesman for the seventh fleet did not discuss details of the challenge. the "miami herald" says parent os the victims of the parkland, florida, school massacre are condemning a video game that simulates school shootings. the game "active shooter" allows players to play the shooter at a school.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a nasa photographer was able to salvage a camera's meantry card which recorded an approaching brush fire and the image of the lens melting. the photographer set up six cameras around the launchpad last week as the rocd blaskevana ir base, but flames from the launch started a gas fire which engulfed and melted a camera that was a quarter mile away. opioids are making their way into the waters in the seattle area. scientists discovered oxycodone in mussels when they tested for contamination. they used clean nontainted musz sells and put them in 18

the "uss arizona" at pearl harbor will remain closed indefinitely. there was a crack noticed. >> reporter: rhonda householder's uncle was one of the crewmen killed on the "uss arizona" during the attack on pearl harbor. >> a little disappointed we can't go out on memorial day. >> reporter: boast transportation was suspended after a vessel operator noticed a crack on the exterior of the memorial. >> reporter: visitation was suspended after a staff member located a crack on the visitor deck. >> the staff went out promptly and determined in the interest of public safety we're going to shut down and have experts come ando a better analysis of what the problem entailed.

>> reporter: after crews repeated interim repairs, visitors were allowed to disembark last wednesday. however, the cracks reappeared indicating a more serious structural issue. >> there is a brow or an edge where the visitor ramp meets the memorial, and at that point there's been some fissures located at the exterior, and after an investigation of interior, it's determined the structure is not supporting the loading ramp the way we need to ensure visitor safety. >> reporter: other areas of the pearl harborcenter remain open. >> we learn a lot about it. you know, we hear what you hear on tv, but you get a chance to see some of it, you know. we enjoyed it even though we didn't get a chance to get on the arizona. >> reporter: engineers are still working to figure out a permanent solution to the problem. >> that was lisa ka buetow reporting. coming up on "cbs this morning," jan crawford tells us
