lives for our country. >> reporter: volunteers are laying down 27,000 roses, one for each gravesite here, honoring veterans and the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. some laying roses for the following this memorial day, others carrying their names with them every day. >> i have it right in my pocket. >> reporter: sergeant first class thomas popa has the names underlined in red, the men who died in his platoon a few weeks after he left vietnam. >> there was an explosion that killed all of them. >> reporter: he also carries this picture of the men he served with. now and 83, he is not sure who is still alive, but every year he comes here to the san francisco national cemetery to honor all those who serve and sacrifice. this year, the 150th anniversary of the memorial day ceremony paying tribute to the men and women who fought and

died for our country. >> we celebrate the lives of young people, who gave their lives. i was someone who trained young men to going to combat. >> reporter: hundreds paid tribute at the flag raising ceremony and grant march. a day to reflect, remember and keep those servicemembers who never returned home close to the heart. >> we are here for them. i carry them with me all the time. in the south bay, they raised the flag in remembrance of fallen servicemembers at a ceremony in campbell. the delmar high school band provided the music, but the special part of the ceremony was the dedication of the pathway to glory, a reconstructed walkway honoring veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

travel over the three-day weekend, nearly 5% more than last year and the most of more than a dozen years. at the same time, the national average price for gas is 31% higher this year than last year. the breakdown of the numbers will make you hold on to your wallets a little tighter here in the bay area, californians are paying significantly more than the national average. the state average is $3.32 per gallon of regular unleaded. that is compared to $2.97 for the national average. in san jose okay, -- the average is $3.76. san francisco pays slightly more at $3.85. analysts say a gulf coast storm and sanctions in iran can be to blame. analysts say there could be good news on the horizon, the same typically gas prices peaked right around the memorial day holiday and then we start to see that demand slowly wane through the summer months into the fall. a hit-

and-run in pleasanton today sent a minivan careening off a major freeway before and landed in a creek. crews pulled and towed away the vehicle around 8 am this morning. you can see it landed upright. all eight passengers, including a toddler, were able to get out with minor injuries. police say the minivan was driving on northbound 680 when it was rear-ended by a blue car . officers are still looking for the driver of that car. in berkeley, the homeless and their allies are fighting back. the city is morning people living in their cars by the berkeley arena to get out or be towed. homeless advocates wanted to put the evictions on hold. they are asking the city to provide running water and garbage facilities instead, basic necessities they believe will help keep the arena safe and clean. >> they have not given them any alternative place to stay. they've essentially said to all of these people, families, disabled people, veterans, you can't be here, and we are not telling you where to go, just

get out of town or suspend yourself in the air. we don't think that is right. >> advocates say this is cruel punishment because berkeley shelters are over capacities. a team of negotiators is in north korea tried to prepare for a summit with kim jong un even after president trump abruptly canceled it last week. it is becoming increasingly clear that both leaders do want this summit to happen. >> reporter: the on-again, off- again summit appears to be on again. but this weekend, it was kim jong un and the south korean president who met for a surprise summit of their own. this is their second meeting in less than 30 days. they met for two hours on the north korean side of the dmz. north korean state media says at the meeting kim jong un expressed his will that the

that he told kim jong un if he gives up his nuclear weapons, the united states were provided security guarantee and economic cooperation. former president george hw bush is back in the hospital. the 93-year-old reportedly experienced fatigue and low price pressure over the weekend was taken to a hospital in maine. he has been battling several health problems. a spokesperson said he is awake and alert and not in any discomfort. the family of a guatemalan woman shot and killed by a border patrol agent is demanding answers after border officials changed their accounts of what happened. cell phone video captured the moments after the 20-year-old was shot by a 15 year border agent veteran. officials say she was illegally crossing into texas, but the circumstances of her death are unclear. >> she was shot. she has blood.

88 livermore. 83 san jose. it will continue to climb throughout the day. the high pressure is what we have to thank for all this beautiful weather, but it will not be in place for much longer. this low pressure system is going to drop in and usher some changes as far as temperatures are concerned. sunshine for most of today, patchy fog has mostly burned off except along the coast where it is actually going to remain relatively cool today. not as warm tomorrow because there is a big cool down coming next week. taking a look at the high temperatures for the day, normally this time of year we are in the mid-60s and mid 70s. today anywhere from 10 to 12 degrees above average. nice and warm. pack a bottle of water and sunscreen if you're headed outside because it will be hot except along the coast where you see the strip of green with

completely protected. i don't want her to get any kind of skin cancer. >> reporter: some people are overwhelmed with so many options for sunscreen, and now research suggests higher spf sunscreens may be the best bet to avoid summer. a recent study found that spf 100 with more protective than 50. >> this was a real you study. people actually used this as opposed to testing in the lab. because people under apply sunscreen, the higher is more forgiving. that was the advantage. for the average user, they put on a little less and skip a little bit, but they still get strong protection. >> reporter: they compared 50 versus 100 on skiers and colorado. the study found the 50 side of the face was 11 times more likely to burn compared to the 100. doctors advise choosing a sunscreen at least 30 or higher. >> you want to look for the words broad-spectrum because that means it protects

strawberries, it is strawberry time. strawberries make everybody happy. i still can't find somebody who says i don't want a strawberry when it is this week, big and delicious. but selection and storage is very important. when you buy them at the market right now, nice and red all the way around and a green stamp -- stem. if there are green shoulders, they will not turn red because once they are picked the sugar content stops. so you want to be sure it is read all the way around. when you bring them home, store them in the refrigerator right away. shelflife is not too long, so store them for just a few days. never wash before you store
