lives for our country. >> reporter: volunteers are laying down 27,000 roses, one for each gravesite here, honoring veterans and the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. some laying roses for the following this memorial day, others carrying their names with them every day. >> i have it right in my pocket. >> reporter: sergeant first class thomas popa has the names underlined in red, the men who died in his platoon a few weeks after he left vietnam. >> there was an explosion that killed all of them. >> reporter: he also carries this picture of the men he served with. now and 83, he is not sure who is still alive, but every year he comes here to the san francisco national cemetery to honor all those who serve and sacrifice. this year, the 150th anniversary of the memorial day ceremony paying tribute to the men and women who fought and

died for our country. >> we celebrate the lives of young people, who gave their lives. i was someone who trained young men to going to combat. >> reporter: hundreds paid tribute at the flag raising ceremony and grant march. a day to reflect, remember and keep those servicemembers who never returned home close to the heart. >> we are here for them. i carry them with me all the time. in the south bay, they raised the flag in remembrance of fallen servicemembers at a ceremony in campbell. the delmar high school band provided the music, but the special part of the ceremony was the dedication of the pathway to glory, a reconstructed walkway honoring veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

travel over the three-day weekend, nearly 5% more than last year and the most of more than a dozen years. at the same time, the national average price for gas is 31% higher this year than last year. the breakdown of the numbers will make you hold on to your wallets a little tighter here in the bay area, californians are paying significantly more than the national average. the state average is $3.32 per gallon of regular unleaded. that is compared to $2.97 for the national average. in san jose okay, -- the average is $3.76. san francisco pays slightly more at $3.85. analysts say a gulf coast storm and sanctions in iran can be to blame. analysts say there could be good news on the horizon, the same typically gas prices peaked right around the memorial day holiday and then we start to see that demand slowly wane through the summer months into the fall. a hit-

and-run in pleasanton today sent a minivan careening off a major freeway before and landed in a creek. crews pulled and towed away the vehicle around 8 am this morning. you can see it landed upright. all eight passengers, including a toddler, were able to get out with minor injuries. police say the minivan was driving on northbound 680 when it was rear-ended by a blue car . officers are still looking for the driver of that car. in berkeley, the homeless and their allies are fighting back. the city is morning people living in their cars by the berkeley arena to get out or be towed. homeless advocates wanted to put the evictions on hold. they are asking the city to provide running water and garbage facilities instead, basic necessities they believe will help keep the arena safe and clean. >> they have not given them any alternative place to stay. they've essentially said to all of these people, families, disabled people, veterans, you can't be here, and we are not telling you where to go, just
