is on the brink of failure, prompting evacuations. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. back on twitter last night a defiant roseanne barr said don't feel sorry for her. the repercussions from barr's earlier racist tweets have come fast and with consequences. her popular rebooted show was canceled by abc costing more than 200 people their jobs and several networks pulled the plug on roseanne's reruns. late last night barr returned to twitter to apologize to the hundreds of people and wonderful writers all liberal and talented actors who lost jobs. she also highlighted supporters tweets that attacked abc and others. earlier she apologized to valerie jarrett and all americans for making a bad joke.

vladier duthiers has more. >> reporter: roseanne barr tweeted, taking aim at valerie jarrett. muslim brotherhood and planet of the apes had a baby. equals v.j. and within minutes barr dismissed a twitter using who said her post was race iist. >> ooh, my baby. >> reporter: only a week ago abc hailed as the highest rated and one of the most watched showed of the season with 21 million users. >> it's all fun and games until you're using your diabetes needles. >> reporter: barr calls herself a trump supporter. even president trump called her to congratulation her. >> look at roseanne. i called her yesterday. over 18 million people, and it was about us. >> reporter: but for many, barr's tweet was the last straw. to a network that will cost millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs, ac canceled the show.

""entertainment tonight's"" kevin frazier. >> were you surprised by the speed at which they canceled her show? >> i was surprised it took so long. >> reporter: some on social media argue it was a politically correct attack on free speech, but the overwhelming response supported abc's decision. that you know what? it is free speech. but as a company, it's ac's prerogative to do what they want. they felt they did the right thing. >> reporter: her talent agency dropped her as a client and three other networks pulled reruns of "roseanne." vladimir duthiers, cbs news, new york. valerie jarrett said during a broadcast interview she's doing just fine. >> i think we have to turn it into a teaching moment. i'm fine. i'm worried about all the people out there that don't have a circle of friends and followers who come right to their defense.

>> the roseanne reboot earned millions in its 50s nine episodes. now, roseanne barr is a big fan of president trump. during the hour-long rally the president hit on a number of other hot button issues in the headlines including border wall, s illegal immigration, and his frequent use of the word "animals" when referencing the violent ms-13 game. president trump was back on the campaign trail last night. >> if you want your country to be safe, then you must go out and get the democrats the hell out of office.

he was stumping for republican congresswoman marsha blackburn. she's set to face phil bredesen in the upcoming elections. >> these are tools of chuck schumer and the ms-13 lover nancy pelosi. >> the president accused democrats of being soft on illegal immigration and with the vie lend ms-13 gang. he worked his recent comments about them into his speech. >> and this is why we call the bloodthirsty ms-13 gang members exactly the name i used last week. what was the name? >> animals! >> animals. >> he also renewed his call on mexico to pay for the border wall. >> they're going to pay for the wall, and they're going to enjoy it, okay? >> reporter: mexican president enrique pena nieto was quick to respond, tweeting, no, mexico will never pay for a wall. not now, not ever. and president trump repeated his criticisms of special counsel robert mueller's investigation.

>> never in the history of our country has something taken place like took place during this election. >> he has called the investigation spygate and a which hunt. republicans hold a slim two-seat majority in the u.s. senate. tennessee's seat is seen as a critical race for both parties in the upcoming elections. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. as early as yesterday prosecutors could have access to data and phones seized by president trump's attorney michael cohen. there are more than a million pieces of data just from three of cohen's phones. more than 250 attorney/client privilege claims will block access to other material. that's according to the court appointed official charged with overseeing the process. over a dozen electronic devices were seized in what prosecutors say was a probe involved cohen's

business interests. the white house says it continues to actively prepare for and expect a summit with north korean leader kim jong-un. today secretary of state mike pompeo travels for talks with the weapons negotiator in an effort to salvage the summit. he would be the highest level north korean official to travel to the u.s. since 2000. this morning an evacuation order has been issued in western north carolina where officials say a dam is at risk of imminent failure. the tahoma dam is located northeast of asheville. water is breaching the dam. area residents have been warned to act swiftly to save their lives. a class 1 emergency has been declared and will continue until inspectors evaluate the damage at daybreak. a just released study finds the death toll from hurricane maria in puerto rico is dramatically higher than reported by the government.

maria claimed the lives of over 4,640 people. that's according to harvard researchers. the island's governmentallied 64 deaths. the harvard study estimates most of the victims dine between september 20th and december 3rd. a third died because of delayed or interrupted medical care. they plan to analyze the study. and residents of the historic city of ellicott city has made it more vulnerable to flooding. this week's devastating floodwaters ravaged the city for the second time in two years. the body of a national guardsman swept away was recovered yesterday. jeff pegues has more. >> i can already see the floor starting to warp again. >> reporter: when the floodwaters came racing down main street, jason barnes' toy store didn't stand a chance. the water was up to the ceiling. >> yeah, and then some it looks like. >> reporter: leaving a basement full of toys under water.

where do you start the cleanup? >> i don't know. i don't know that anything will be salvageable. >> reporter: like many here, barnes has no flood insurance, and also like many others, he spent much of his savings rebuilding after the flooding two years ago. this flood is worse. on sunday the water came rushing down main street, and as it rushed down, it took the sidewalk with it with the water up to the tops of some of these doors. the water ran so fast some shops when from dry to flooded in just minutes. >> everyone is going to have to start asking the hart question, can we stay. >> reporter: this time around jason said he's not sure he will. jeff pegues, cbs news, ellicott city, maryland. well, after nearly six months of fighting to stay in office, the governor of missouri is resigning. eric greitens, road scholar and ex-navy s.e.a.l. was a rising star in the gop, but news of the

affair with his hair dresser lead to an investigation of whether he violated finance campaign laws. greitens said his resignation takes place friday. >> the time has come to tend to those who have been wounded and to care for those who need us most, so for the moment, let us walk off the battlefield with our heads held high. >> lawmakers pressured greitens to step down including many republicans. a new lava flow from the kilauea volcano shut down a major highway in ahh. the most active sent lava shooting 100 feet into the air. 112 buildings have been destroyed including 71 homes and the power to two beach communities has been knocked out. coming up on the "morning news" now, escape act. a jury hands down a decision in the david copperfield case. and serving up a fashion statement. why serena williams wore a black cat suit at the french open. this is the "cbs morning news." williams wore a black

there's a decision in the david copperfield case, and starbucks confronts racism. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "philadelphia inquirer" reports on starbucks shutting down across the country yesterday for racial bias training. more than 8,000 locations were closed. nearly 175,000 employees took part in the four-hour training. the company's ceo kevin johnson said starbucks wanted employees to acknowledge their biases and disrupt them. the training comes after the manager of a philadelphia starbucks called police on two black men who hadn't ordered anything. the "los angeles times" reports police are investigating 52 complaints of sexual misconduct against former usc gynecologist dr. george tyndall. police say the allegations against tyndall date back to 1990 through 2016.

authorities are encouraging other patients who feel they were mistreated to come forward. more than two dozen former patients have sued tyndall and the university. the university says they complained about tyndall for two years and didn't take action until 2016. the" review-journal" found the claims against davids copperfield to be unfounded. a british tourist gavin cox sued for brain injuries when he fell during a magic show. they found david copperfield and the hotel negligent but not for cox's injuries. and "sports illustrated" reports serena williams wore a cat suit to show her comeback and for women who are fierce.

on the "cbs moneywatch" uber launches a panic button, and trouble in it lay rocks global stocks. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning. the political crisis caused a selloff on wall street and overseas markets. italy's political unrest could lead to re-elections in months and possibly abandoning the euro. if that happens, it would have consequences for the entire financial system. meanwhile the trump administration is still considering imposing tariffs on chinese imports. the dow tumbled 391 points or over 1.5%. the s&p 500 finished 31 points lower, and the nasdaq fell 37 points.

>> uber has launched a new safety feature on its apps in the united states, an emergency button. the panic button is part of uber's campaign to curb vie benz the emergency button will call 911 and share the customer's it's located in a new safety center menu. uber says it gives quick access to first responders in case something goes wrong during their trip. the world's largest diamond mine de beers has launched a new brand, manmade stones. they're called light box. they're expected to be up to 90% less than natural zones. so there's no confusion they'll have a tiny mark indicating they are manmade. and delta air lines outfitted its employees a new uniform. 64,000 of delta's front line workers will be wearing the new outfits. the new color is called passport

yesterday. he was drafted by the chiefs in 2014 but kept studying to get his medical degree. he'll play football a little while longer though. last year he signed a $41 million five-year extension. a controversial new video game is being taken off the market. the game "active player" allows players to be the school shooter or members of the elite law enforcement team. video game distributor valve announced yesterday it's removing it from its video storefront. the company said it also removed the game's developer from its site. the game was set to be released next week. and the annual scripps national spelling bee is under way and this year it's a day longer. the spelling competition started yesterday with a record 516 contestants. the expanded field means there's three days of spelling instead of two. the final 50 compete tomorrow, and for the first time the child of a former champion is

our top stories this morning. it didn't take long. a defiant roseanne barr is back on twitter a her show was canceled following a racist tweet following a former adviser to president obama. last night she said she was done with twitter, but last night she tweeted an apology to those who lost their jobs because of her. and president trump was in tennessee campaigning for republican congressional candidates. he urged republicans not to be complaisant. he also accused democrats of being soft on immigration and renewed his call for mexico to pay for a border wall.
