very latest this afternoon. jessica? >> reporter: michelle, ann, we have had the fast moving winds all morning. officials hearsay they've clocked in around 50 -- here say they've clocked in around 50 miles an hour. fire is mostly out. we're not seeing flames. here is what we're seeing. we're seeing this smoldering pile here. it is mostly out but they're concerned about flames whipping up again and that is why they're monitoring this fire closely. the wind still whipping up smoke in the grassy fields off byron highway as firefighters work to completely contain the grant fire. it started yesterday afternoon as seven separate fires straddling alameda and eastern contra costa county consuming 500 acres and burning two out buildings. >> we're dealing with what we call roll out our hot spots and materials that tend to flair up. >> the winds are mostly out

leaving behind debris and charred fields. they're keeping an eye on the land and are ready for the fast moving wind and dry brush fueling any more flames. >> this is a good reminder that fire season is here and it is time to clear the brush around the structures to make sure if the fire occurs near your home that your home has a chance of surviving. >> reporter: right now fire officials tell us that this 85% contained, no one has been injured and right now they're keep ag an eye on that pile right there, making sure that the fire doesn't flair up again. reporting live here in byron i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. another fire has badly danieled a teacher's union damaged a teacher's union building in san jose. a fire broke out at 2:00 a.m.. it houses the california teacher's association. there was another fire at the same location in march reportedly caused by a molotov cocktail. there are no reports of any

have cool temperatures, so that, at least; on the side of the firefighters. we'll have more on that in a bit. new information about how a woman with dementia ended up dead at san francisco general hospital. jackie ward explains the woman had been reported missing. >> reporter: ruby anderson signed herself out of the residential care facility for the elderly on the campus of sf july on sunday, may 20th. she was expected to return by 4:00 that afternoon. ten days later she was found in the stair well of a power plant. she was the resident of a care facility and not a patient of the hospital, the sheriff's department did not search the building for her when she was reported missing. >> we're looking at that to see whether it is a sheriff's department responsibility or the responsibility of the engineers in the building 24 hours and 7 days a week. >> reporter: the responding deputy followed protocol exactly calling her family, checked with the hospital to see if she had been admitted and called the jail toll see if she had been picked up. anderson's family didn't return

their calls until two days later. as investigators still try to find out what went wrong, buildings on campus not that are not direct patient care areas are being searched. >> they're going through, starting today, top to bottom, room by room inspection of the nooks and crannies and spaces and that will be part of the ongoing assessment. >> reporter: the facility where anderson was staying houses 50 residents ages 60 and older. it is a nonmedical boarding setting that provides services for personal care and attention. the medical examiner is still conducting an autopsy so it is not confirmed she died. the building anderson was found in used to allow access to staff from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. starting immediately, badge access will be required 24/7. the candidates running for district attorney in contra costa county will weigh in on an ongoing debate over i.c.e. cooperation. they will discuss immigration at

a planned forum. this comes as many advocacy groups are cutting ties with i.c.e.. they hold undocumented immigrants under a $6 million contract. school safety is back in the spotlight as the president meets with family members of victims of the deadly school shooting in texas. cbs correspondent mola lenghi has more from the white house. >> reporter: president trump left washington for texas where he will meet privately with the families of the victims of the santa fe high school shooting. ten people were killed in the attack earlier this month. it is the 27th shooting at a school since mr. trump took office. at wednesday's white house briefing, press secretary sarah huckabee sanders got emotional when a 13-year-old student journalist representing time for kids asked sanders what the administration is doing to improve school safety. >> one thing that affects mine and other student's health is the worry about the fact that we or our friends could get shot at

school. specifically, can you tell me what the administration has done and will do to prevent the senseless tragedies? >> i think that as a kid and certainly as a parent, there is nothing that could be more terrifying for a kid to go to school and not feel safe, so i'm sorry that you feel that way. >> reporter: the president's commission on school safety also meets today. this is the third meeting since it was created in the wake of the parkland shooting. after parkland, the president said he would look into stricter background checks, raising the minimum age for buying assault weapons and possibly arming teachers, but no action has been taken. committee chair education secretary betsy devos says the commission wouldn't offer the final recommendations until the end of the year, mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. president trump is considering another high profile pardon speaking on-air force one. he may grant clemency to businesswoman martha stewart. she was convicted in 2004 for obstructing justice, lying about

a stock trade. trump said stewart used to be one of his biggest fans. trump also said that he is considering commuting the sentence of former illinois governor and apprentice contestant rob blavoyavich. the u.s. and north korean delegations have ended two days of talks in new york with no announcement yet on whether a summit between president trump and kim jong un is back on. secretary of state mike pompeo and a north korean chairman ended the meetings about 90 minutes earlier than expected. a state department official says it is a result of, quote, the parties making progress and the meeting going well. meanwhile, there is more work being done in north korea and singapore where delegations are working out the logistics of the possible summit. >> the it is all a process. we'll see and hopefully we'll have a meeting on the 12th. that is going along very well but i want it to be meaningful. it doesn't mean it gets all done
